ADA TRANSPORTATION UNFRIENDLY - 10/15/2023

We made reservations for hotel and flights for a convention located in Old Town Albuquerque NM. When preparing for our trip we found that the city of Albuquerque has no handicap transportation services from the international airport to the inner city unless you take the city transit bus. No taxi, shuttle, or even an ADA rental. If you need ADA transportation services and are traveling here. You may won’t to reconsider your plans, if not, contact the hotel where you are considering to stay and maybe they can accommodate your needs.

very underrated, but not exactly the best - 2/20/2023

i'm from albuquerque. born here, raised in denver, moved back at 11. it's cool, there's a lot of great restaurants, the people are friendly, the vibe is laid-back, it's really pretty and so underrated. there's a lot of sun, which is absolutely great, i love the weather here, but the crime is BAD. if you stay away from the war zone, most of Eubank/Menaul, Zuni, and La Mesa, you'll be okay. but don't be fooled, albuquerque is dangerous. a TON of property crime, but violent crime isn't too bad (still bad, but not as bad as nearby cities denver, phoenix, and tulsa). it gets a little sketchy. overall, i love it here and it gets way too much hate from outsiders. pros: diversity great air quality pretty good water quality a lot of stores a very large amount of great restaurants (and 3 awesome food halls) friendly people 300 days of sunshine per year (not a lie, unlike what our narcissistic neighboring city Denver says) little to no traffic outdoor activities, i'm not a fan but if you are, you'll love it here bike trails, bike lanes, and other bike stuff (albuquerque is very bike-friendly) lgbt-friendly laid back vibe a lot of parks chill neighborhoods cons: crime specific neighborhoods homelessness drug use wind sunburns, dry skin and other things bad schools (unless you live in north abq or downtown/nob hill area) the war zone a TON of static so yeah, that's Albuquerque for you. i'd give it an 8/10. great, but not the best.

Albuquerque's cool, but really dangerous. - 11/23/2022

it has really good culture, it's fun, the people are friendly, the weather's decent, the art scene is amazing, it's very LGBTQ-accepting, the mexican food is great, and it's really pretty during nighttime! but it's also REALLY dangerous- it's consistently ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in the usa, and it's up there with spokane, portland, and denver for some of the worst property crime nationwide. i'd say ray and forrest's reviews are the best on here, and the rest are just exaggerating. john's review is misspelled and just flat out stupid. but i will admit, albuquerque has an insane crime problem and i wish it didn't.

WORST place to live. Top it off with it's horrible education system. (my son didnt learn a THING)!! It's a POOR dirty trash infested state with NOTHING to offer honest tax paying citizens. I took a huge loss on my house and MOVED OUT. There are WAY more better places to live than this slum of a dump city

Please fix crime rate! right now!way to dangerous. - 7/8/2021

All they need to do is study why EL Paso is successful in their crime rate AND THEN IMPLEMENT THE SAME SYSTEM IN ALBUQUERQUE. Please do this so I can then move there. Thanks.

Want to give negative stars to Hell as one should - 3/30/2021

I've lived in this place my whole life except the years I was in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is a dump with unemployment seen all around and beggers at almost every street light , you can't go anywhere without seeing a homeless person pushing a shopping cart, if your a night person don't even think of this place for a city of over a half a million the streets are rolled up at 9 pm no food , gas few and far between and not anyplace to go. It is moving backwards here 30 years ago grocery stores, Walmart, and restaurants were open til midnight some til 2 am, now finding a stinking burger after 10 pm is like finding a bag of cash on your doorstep, every business has security or actual police in there parking lots as if your living in a police State , God forbid you own a van because now your a Target for security in all these parking lots, even if you've never had A run in with anyone you just go about your business and leave they take extra interest in you because you can't own a van and a home at the same time (sarcasm). It's either that or they Target me because of my Disabled Veterans license plate ( hoping it's for the van, crappy thing to hope for), and the drivers here are insane they will pull out of a side street and get in front of you in your lane when the 2 other lanes are free of traffic as far as the eye can see as well as your lane behind you, I bring this up because of how often it happens and the 2 times I've been hit by these fools, in different parts of town auto insurance is higher than others because of this and a multitude of other driving infractions (half a million people not all drive, see the problem), and I don't care about politics but here are nicknames the news has used about Democrats in charge here ,Pay to play Governor (old gov. I guess taking bribes), Democratic training for political crimes, you get it if I cared there are a lot I can't and don't care to remember, and if you haven't felt with sorry I call them what they legally are , illegals from across the border ( didn't enter the USA legally) this has a effect on society that in my opinion nobody wants , Desensitizeing you to horrific crime 2 examples that got less than a minute on the news and no public outcry 8 MONTH old girl raped and died because of it by illegal, a nursery School worker left a child in her car outside the nursery in 100 degree heat child died, she was a illegal, need I say more to all you never lived on the border but got a lot to say about it intellectual Giants out there, nothing in this state is worth loosing your humanity and feelings for others who lose a loved one in these ways, I could go on about so many other things but if these things don't give you a reason to stay clear then your the kind of person I'm getting out of this place because of. Would give negative stars if I could.

Interesting history, culture and landscape but... - 3/25/2021

Lived here over 40 years. Albuquerque is a sanctuary city, along with most of the state. Most state and local politics are occupied by outside vetted people. Fees and taxes are rising for regular folks. We do have a lot of interesting history, culture and landscape. Like much of the Southwest we are in a long term drought with limited water. Choose wisely but we are relocating to SW Colorado.

Was nice desert town, years ago, not so much now - 3/24/2021

Been here since 70s. ABQ was a laid back desert town then. Civility, community, quality of life were exceptional even with the underlying poverty and undereducation. The three cultures, Hispanic, Anglo, Native respected one another, tolerated one another. Somewhere along the way the old school hardworking, family-oriented Hispanics were replaced with recently arrived immigrants who have more allegiance with Mexico than America, hence the proliferation of gaudy descansos that litter the highways. The hippie/ cowboy anglos were replaced with relocated east/ west coasters and midwesterners who drive up housing prices and want it to be like where they came from. The Indians build casinos for better or worse, harvesting most of their profits from the local community. Even though NM government has always been a good ole boy network it was far more honest than today’s crop of globalist vetted morons. Property tax will rise dramatically in the next few years because we’ve destroyed what diversity we had in the economy. Brew pubs can’t be the main driver of the local economy in the future, neither can casinos. On top of it all will be the long term drought which has already started. Fortunately we’re able to relocate to SW Colorado for retirement, where the environment is clean and folks are proud and supportive of preserving something good.

Deep Love for ABQ - 1/11/2021

After 7 visits in three years I move last January. ABQ is steeped in Native American tradition, has the best hiking trails I've ever seen and is absolutely beautiful. The Governor's handling of the pandemic has been excellent.

Great place to live - 1/7/2021

I've lived here for 25 years. The city and surrounding areas have much to offer. Hiking trails, fishing, camping, hunting, hot air ballooning, skiing and snowboarding, and off-roading are just some of the outdoor activities available. Several nice casinos are close to the city which also have spas and nice restaurants. If you like Mexican food, you will probably love New Mexican food and our world famous chile. Cost of living is quite reasonable. Two interstate highways intersect near the middle of town and provide easy access to various parts of the metro area. Plenty of apartment complexes and decent neighborhoods. Public schools could be a bit better but they're not horrible. Like anywhere else there is some crime but if you lock your home and car and stay out of rough areas at night you'll be ok. CNM is a good community college, and we have UNM as well which is a well respected college for business, medicine, law, and more. Many employment opportunities (call centers, tech companies, film industry, hospitals, casinos, federal Laboratories, restaurants, and more). I want to live in a few other places since I've spent much of my life here, but to be honest I see myself coming back here to retire (if I ever leave in the first place ha).

Objective, honest opinion - 11/19/2020

I have lived in ABQ and other cities in the west, so here's my honest take. Pro's: Nice weather overall. Lots of sunshine, Summers are hot but not horrid like Phoenix. Spring winds a bit annoying. Overall.... good for golfing and outdoor activities. Jobs aren't real hard to find. Some good employers like the federal government (FAA) and high tech (But see the Cons). UNM is a good school - with a lot of hippies who never left. Good college sports! The Pit is a fun place to watch UNM basketball. Balloon festival; People are pretty friendly for the most part. Blake's Lottaburger!!! The Sandia mountains are neat. All the usual big city theme restaurants and some nice mom and pop places. Great Mexican food. I like the old town. I think multi-culturalism is a bit overrated, but if you like that kind of thing...some nice neighborhoods like anywhere else but some real BAD ones. Lots of churches, but see "Cons" Cons: Crime/economics: Boy is there crime! It seems like mostly it's vandalism, theft and robberies. Lots of drugs and vato gangs. ABQ seems, for some reason, to attract a lot of bad people, transients and druggies/alcoholics; a lot of poor and unskilled people live here. A lot of hard-looking people - even among the middle class - which there isn't much of. [My brother-in-law was at a McDonalds with his kids (in a decent area) and two knuckleheads robbed the place in broad daylight and while very busy too! Of course the clowns got caught]. The cops are tough and they practice racial profiling so I hear. Jobs pay crappy for the cost of living. You want $12/hour??? How dare you ask! There's a lot of old boy networking and a poverty mentality, not a "can-do" attitude like I found when I moved to Texas. There's some really bad neighborhoods like I said. Even the vaunted "NE Heights" has some problems. Rio Rancho and Taylor Ranch are nice. Some mega churches but the ministers seem like those old west "healing tonic" salesmen. Lots of trash and needles! The spring winds blow it all around too. They need to start fining people. They should make the little smart-a55 juvenile offenders pick up garbage as a punishment. Bet that'd cut down the recidivism rate. Anyway there's worse places to live, but overall it's not bad. There's just a LOT of poverty and social problems! Nobody seems to ever have enough money to get by.

ABQ offers so much and many great neighborhoods! - 10/22/2020

I've lived here, moved away from here, and moved back, and couldn't be happier that I did. Am I careful where I choose to live here? Absolutely, as I have been when I've lived elsewhere. Just like all cities or metro areas with nearly 1 million people, there are good areas and there are bad. Nobody forces you to live in the bad, and the great part about ABQ is that there are affordable housing options in many safe neighborhoods. ABQ is largely comprised of suburban style neighborhoods, most of which have quiet streets and rarely experience what you've described. Is it perfect? No, far from it, but move away from the Central Avenue corridor, and your experience will be different. Problems like homelessness, poverty, education, transportation, immigration, quality employment, and access to healthcare are not unique to Albuquerque. When combined, they breed crime. That's why there are 22 other cities listed as having worse crime than Albuquerque, including Myrtle Beach, St. Louis, Detroit, Stockton, San Bernardino, Baltimore, Wilmington, Kansas City and 14 others. This happens to be one of the most naturally beautiful landscapes in the country, with clear blue skies, colorful sunsets, 320+ days with sunshine, an abundance of outdoor activities, fairly mild desert climate, well regarded medical facilities, fairly affordable housing market, minimal traffic jams and reasonable commute times. It's an area that is rich in culture, that welcomes artists and creative talent, that has high tech engineering jobs, that is a comfortable place to retire, that younger families can afford to buy a home, and is a short distance from tons of fun daytrips or weekend getaways. The metro area includes about 55 square miles, with neighborhoods and communities within areas that are urban, historic, suburban, rural, wooded, agricultural, high density, low density, traditional, gated, planned, unincorporated, mountainside, on the bluff, along the river banks, in villages, small towns, and small cities. From Sandia Park to Rio Rancho, or Corrales to Four Hills, and Sandia Heights to Volcano Cliffs, Ventana Ranch & Bosque Farms, you'll find very low crime rates, quiet nights, several school districts with very favorable ratings, and wide variety of residents with diverse backgrounds.

Not a bad place to live - 9/17/2020

Lived there 7 yrs. Left 3 yrs ago. I sure miss the weather which is real nice. Cost of living not bad, unless you consider what you get for what you pay. If you’re not a G.I. or Government worker you can forget about quality priced healthcare. Literally you will pay a ton! Food options are good and fair priced. If you’re not from there, you’ll learn the hard or easy way that you conform to their way of life, not the other way around. It never stopped being Spain and that’s ok. Learn Spanish for free there anytime. Seriously they have a school on 4 th street. If you like to run and bike it’s your best place as there are trails everywhere. People generally are inclusive and kind and hard working. Now for the cons and yes there are plenty. Crime is bad no matter what anyone says. There is a huge theft problem there that you have to see to believe. Tons of drugs, I mean beyond comprehension bad. Careful where you walk cause needles are all over certain parks and other parts of town. Generally speaking the political scene in New Mexico isn’t the best and some like to keep the desperate on the hook. It’s usually those folks on the blue side. Although they have their upside also. As a rule people live and let live there, but there are quite a few troublemakers. Normally it’s losers who have problems with other losers in town. Unlike places like St Louis where you will be shot in North City for your car, ABQ is kinda different, normally you gotta get in their way or piss somebody off. All police do a good job in New Mexico. God bless all of them. When I lived there they we’re REAL intense and didn’t apologize either. Yeah. I recommend Monica’s El Portal in Old town. My personal favorite! Don’t ever drive unsafe or fast in a school zone there for obvious reasons, but they will mess you up fast! Good job on there part. If you are one to gossip, I warn you now to mind your own business and never gossip there. New Mexicans are your best friend till you gossip then they will screw you up fast. Just keep your mouth shut. Always. They hate that stuff bro! If you move there and stay past 2 years or so it will own you. It must release you for you to go and move away. There is something very sacred and special about time you will spend there. You have to live there to understand. Best wishes

Albuquerque the - 8/12/2020

I was reporting my entire three year fiasco here in Albuquerque, and the page shut down while I was going through it. This city is a horror story. There is terrible stalking by people, stealing of anything and everything, hypodermic needles all over the city, homeless camps, garbage, hatred, racism, vandalism, passive aggressive abuse of others, slander, gun shots, two months of the fourth of July (constant booms until 3 to 5 a.m.), and sleep completely disrupted. This has got to be the worst city for mental health issues across this nation.

Albuquerque is the best place I've lived in 6 deca - 7/27/2020

Albuquerque crime is hardly worse than other US cities of comparable size these days. It has almost every shopping experience desired and if not there is always online shopping. My car has been broken into 3 times in 10 years which to me is minor. I’d love 0 break- ins but that is not being realistic in this country. Plenty of work and outdoor opportunities with loads of sunshine. I have great neighbors in a great neighborhood. Like many other things in life, it is what you make of it.

You get used to the sounds of gunfire! - 1/30/2020

I only lived in Albuquerque for four months, June to September 2018. While the weather is nice and there are plenty of fun things to do, the crime and government are something to experience. I was there about a week when I heard the first nearby gunshots. I started looking up the weekly crime map on the Albuquerque Police Department web site. And the governor kicking all the National Guard off the border (NM and other states) which overwhelmed the border sheriffs and increased the drugs and crime in Albuquerque. So think before moving to the heart of the People’s Democratic Republic Of New Mexico. I was used to gunfire as I have been once to Iraq and four times to Afghanistan.

Albuquerque, NM is a great city - 12/2/2019

Albuquerque, NM is a great city filled with innovative technology, such as a bus with its own dedicated lane on the street. The crime here is low, and if you’re used to living in any major city, such as Juarez, Tijuana, or Mexico City, you should be fine here. Albuquerque has thriving industries in qualifying for federal dollars (a major source of job growth) and drug trafficking. There are many jobs available in the latter, and it’s a great place to get ahead in your career, because the justice system does not keep people in prison that effectively or for that long. If you’re looking for career networking, there are multiple prison gangs that operate in and out of prison, such as SNM. Albuquerque is a great place to raise a family, because the government provides Medicaid and SNAP to help cover the expenses. There are many fun indoor activities in Albuquerque, such as staying home and watching Netflix on weekends while lots of drunk drivers are out and crime spectating (observing the ridiculous things that people do in this city on the news). You can access all the conveniences you might need here, such authentic Mexican food and any illegal substance trafficked from the southern border. Should anything go wrong, there is a thriving homeless scene with many other homeless arriving from other states on a regular basis. If you want a great place not to work in the legal economy, to indulge your vices, to pop out a lot of babies on the public dime, this is just the place.

Albuquerque's Crime Problem is REAL - 11/24/2019

I lived in Albuquerque for over 20 years and finally had to move away because of the crime and economic problems. After my car was stolen (from inside my garage, my bike was stolen, and I was mugged for a petty amount of cash in the NE Heights, I called it quits. People will claim Albuquerque "isn't so bad" when compared to (Insert city here). But the FBI crime statistics say otherwise. The city is home to the nation's highest rate of car theft, top 5 overall property crime, New Mexico is top 10 for violent crime, and as of November 2019, Albuquerque is about to hit its all-time record for homicides. I remember sometime in the past year hearing the city had 113 shootings in 114 days. All of this is absolutely ridiculous and totally unacceptable for anyone who wants to live a quiet, peaceful life or raise kids there. But the dirty, dark secret is that it has been this way for a LOOOOONNNG time. If I recall correctly, Albuquerque hit its previous murder record all the way back in 1996. And if you look deep enough into the stats you will see that the state of New Mexico has been top 10 in Violent crime on and off going all the way back to 1965. Yes, its been bad for over 50 years! What does this kind of crime look like? I will tell you. It looks like an elderly woman being stabbed in the "nice part of town" while carrying groceries home. It looks like a man being CRUCIFIED to a tree in the Bosque nature preserve. It looks like a man being found decapitated behind a local Wal-Mart. It looks like a mailwoman's body being found burned on the West Mesa. It looks like a man being shot multiple times and then driving his car into oncoming traffic in the South Valley. It looks like a teenage boy being gunned down outside a pizza parlor near the airport. These are all real crimes you can Google which have happened in totally different parts of the city. And they are just some of the more high-profile ones. It's a constant problem. But the most frequent reports are people having their cars stolen, houses robbed, and property stolen. If this is the kind of life you want for your family, by all means move to Albuquerque. And I have barely even touched on the problems like a slower economy than every surrounding state, the polluted (and disappearing) drinking water, and job growth slow for most years since 2010. I didn't even mention the 49th in the nation school system or the massive DWI problem that never gets resolved (hint: don't ever drive your car between midnight and 4am in Albuquerque). You may think Albuquerque is all pretty sunsets and green chile cheeseburgers but there is a cost to be paid. The housing may be affordable, but it may cost you your car, your money, or even your life. Think twice about moving there!
