Great restaurants, decent college, and bigoted ppl - 7/16/2020

I lived in Greeley, CO during my undergraduate for 4 years. I recently moved to go receive my graduate degree elsewhere. However, there are so many ups and downs of this place. Pros: -Amazing local places for food. The customer service tends to be amazing at any of these places. Right Coast, Romas, Patricks, Luna's, Tasty Kitchen, and so on. -Customer service at most retailers and shops tend to be very good. -Theres a good amount of polite people who live and let live. -The police tend to be nice and are understanding. -Has a good hospital and health care system. -Lot of community events. -Equal distance from Denver and Cheyenne. Cons: -Not fully related to Greeley, but as they are the county seat. -Sheriff Reams is the worst and most disrespectful sheriff to ever exist. He belongs in some homophobic, racist, sexist town pass the Mason Dixon Line. He refuses to enforce laws that the Governor enforces for GOOD REASONS. He's a prime example of why many want to reallocate where funding belongs, and why the police should be "Defunded". He of course can't get voted out as no one will go against him. Hope someone does. He should be ashamed of how he acts. -A good chunk of the population have bigots who treat others like absolute garbage. Gay? Well, expect to be told you should be fired from your job! So on so forth. A good chunk of the people believe that they deserve to decide what the state should be like and how their policies should be. -They treat anyone from any other state, like garbage. Came here for college, got verbally attacked for being from out of state. They'll also blame everything on you. -The cost of rent is astronomical.

Greeley, CO

Horrendous. - 11/10/2018

Greeley is unique for sure. I think I’m more impressed with it’s distant history and humble beginnings rather than the juggernaut of what it is today. That being said, that aversion has to do with the culture (not races!) and people there more than the actual location and industries. But Greeley’s affordability comes at the expense of several things others might consider to be less negotiable. Being from the Midwest, the industries are more bearable for someone like me. But after living in Colorado for nearly a decade, Greeley and Weld county at large tend to encompass a distinct culture that is legitimately and understandably off putting for so many other Colorado inhabitants. So many in Greeley prefer to solidly make light of the putrid stockyard air pollution by openly insisting that it ‘smells like money’, which isn’t helping with the already unflattering impression that they create for themselves with people and places elsewhere. Which in turn fuels the long standing position of Greeley being the butt of so many brain killing air pollution/petroleum fume jokes while maintaining such a pretentious and naive mindset. Especially when in reality, compared to the rest of Colorado it ends up proving to be more reminiscent of a trailer park version of southern high society believing that possessing so many oilfield jobs justifies any of it. The worst offenders seem to always be the oilfield workers -who are young, less educated and able to maintain the crazy work schedules that pay them better than many with doctorate degrees typically earn. They’re hard to miss because most haven’t gotten out much outside small towns and tend to behave more wildly like unattended high school age kids, given too much and using it to fund living a lifestyle somewhere between ghetto fabulous and hillbilly deluxe. Nothing worse than trying to get a drink with your girls and they present themselves like royalty and won’t shut up or go away. Bouncers can attest that oilfield workers and roofied girls are too often synonymous at Greeley bars due to the I-25 corridor directly from MX where the drug is still legal and made available to those who can afford it here. If you’re even an average looking female walking to lunch or to your car after work in downtown, you’re probably going to get cat called and or honked at by one or more oversized diesel cab trucks of oilfield workers. The lack of class and maturity that these people bring with that industry is mortifying. I stopped claiming to be from there before I finally got out. I stopped planning outings there, so then when I went elsewhere I didn’t want to be associated with it anyways. People outside of Greeley too often apologize, cringe or just try to be polite at the mention. Not too long ago, it boasted a much more active gang culture. Some people think it’s gone, but I disagree. It’s just different now and people are quieter. You could be with your family at some parks 35th eastward & 34 southward, and you’ll get people dealing/doing drugs midday. But then you also witness street racing/peeling out/drunk & disorderly on weekend nights or just learn to sleep through it when you get tired of calling the cops and just pray it’s not another guy dragging an ex-girl who’s rejecting him off the sidewalk and into bushes. The only thing not sketchy that was open 24 hours was Walgreens and the last time I was there a manager was following after a guy who ran out the door with some Electronics. No grocery stores or even Walmart stay open past midnight. And theft is apparently so bad at the Walmart stores that they make you show your receipt before you exit. I stopped going because I didn’t have time to constantly be held up at the door and wasnt going to comply with being treated like a thief. What does that say?! No thanks. On a separate but relevant note, its also the county seat for the absolute worst drivers I’ve ever had to share the road with. It’s a crapshoot driving 34 in any direction. 34 is notorious for its typically avoidable accidents. You’d swear it was vortex or something. Some days I could take 85 to Denver faster than 34 to Loveland due to the the most ignorant, inconsiderate and offensive (not the smart defensive types so much) as well as inclement weather incompetent drivers I’ve ever seen anywhere else in Colorado. In fairness, transplants from warm places dont help. But I’ve also never seen so many people get offended, speed up or nudge at playing chicken when you just have somewhere more important or pressing to be rather than behind them, camped in the passing lane and or impeding the speed limit by 10-15 mph as well. But what’s even worse than that sometimes are the ones who lose their minds & driving faculties and or panic/pull over when it rains or hails a little. (Thankfully, when you approach or reach outside Weld county lines, it usually dissapates.) I’ve unfortunately felt the need to call the drunk driver/HP # on a few occasions when the driving was so bad that I actually questioned sobriety. You may still have a rosy impression, but with time and exposure, Greeley tends to earn its reputation rather honestly and beyond the lower COL and taxes. The best anyone can do really is to reside within the 35th westward /34 northward corner, which is far enough away from the real Greeley to avoid the typical grossness you can’t avoid otherwise. But even that has slowly been moving west. Maybe one day it will get better. But I sadly have yet to find much to be left realistically optimistic of that. Which sucks for the all the natives and better people who stick around in spite of all the lowered standards in people that continue to permeate and foul it up worse than any stockyard possibly could. But you also can’t blame those of us who couldn’t keep making concessions in our overall standards for an upfront cheaper COL and tax rate. Sub par standards will always be more expensive in the long run in other ways. And that is why so many of us are more than happy to own a mid-century bungalow in a better area of Colorado than settle for the cheap new construction in NW Greeley and the eastward stuff that accompanies and slowly encroaches it. They came up with a “Greeley Unexpected” slogan recently. Which is poetic, because you don’t want to find all this out the hard way after you buy a house and try to plant yourself here.

Greeley Gets Bad Rap! - 4/15/2015

We moved to "West" Greeley in 2011 from the Fort Collins zip code of Windsor, CO. We, too, had heard the Northern Colorado residents bashing Greeley but after enduring 3 harsh years in the NoCo economy, we were forced to seek more affordable housing. Loveland and Fort Collins home prices run 30-35% higher than the "nicer" homes in Greeley in the "nicer" neighborhoods, i.e. Avenues WEST of 35th and Streets NORTH of Hwy 34. Housing available under $295,000 in Loveland/FTC was 20-25 year old trash! Nothing we could proudly call home. If one compares your COL indexes for Loveland versus Greeley, you see an overall picture that paints Loveland as 10% higher across the board {than Greeley}. What isn't "rated" is the convenience of shopping in Greeley where in 10 minutes, or less, we have access to every kind of "box" store from Best Buy to Lowes, to Home Depot, Kohls, Macy's (and Centerra Mall) just to name a few. Loveland and Windsor have a dividing line of I-25 for economic growth that is definitely "Go East Young Man"; the newness and growing trend definitely sees the sun come up, while Greeley heads West (remember Horace Greeley, "Go West, Young Man", and expect the two cities to meet in the middle in 5 years or so. Larimer County is more expensive in their tax base than Weld County. We, in Weld County, West Greeley, saw a 9% tax DEcrease in our 2015 property tax bills. Weld has NO debt. Weld is built on agriculture, true, but is diversifying as we speak. In short - Do not assume that people are telling the truth about all of Greeley! We love it and enjoyed a 7%+ Housing Value increase in 2014! Housing to the west is still very affordable and building is booming!

Very Conservative corner of Colorado - 2/19/2015

Many places in Colorado are very liberal, but Weld County, Colorado as well as Colorado Springs rival some of the most right-wing areas in the nations. While there are a few democrats hanging on, the republicans have a lock on county government as well as the state seat for this region.

Inconsiderate People - 7/2/2014

I have lived in Greeley, Colorado for 8 months and I regret ever having stepped foot in this miserable town. The people here have no consideration for others. They will blast there stereos into your home day and night, allow there dogs to run loose and if they run after you as you walk down the sidewalk, they will look at you as if you have some nerve walking past there home. As for the noisy neighbors, if you ask them to keep the noise down they will threaten you and even increase the volume of their stereos or step up whatever other noise that they have up their sleeve. such as screaming kids, barking dogs, banging, pounding you name it. They do these things on purpose just because they get a kick out seeing people get upset. The police here in Greeley are utterly useless, because they refuse to do anything to help you. Yes, Greeley is the worst city I have ever been in the my life and I have been to a lot of cities in my life. GREELEY COLORADO IS THE LOW LIFE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!

Most fracked city in Colorado - 7/29/2013

While local governments love the oil and gas revenue, they turn a deaf ear to people concerned about health issues related to fracking. This July, there was the first reported case of someone having trouble getting a mortgage for a house 250' feet from a frack well. And so it begins. There are 427 wells as of this date, with another 200 expected within city limits, and they are in neighborhoods, not some remote outpost. Neighboring cities are banning fracking so they don't become like Greeley. Buyer beware!

Big Town with Small Town Feel - 3/9/2012

My husband and I moved from FLorida to Greeley in 2006 after suffering the 2005 Hurricane season. It is a quite place to live for 90K population. The City concentrates a lot on preserving the City for parks and the UCCC Civic Center brings in good acts at a low cost. Of course, we boast of the world's largest rodeo--the INdependence Day Stampede. There is usually something always happening every weekend. We were warned of the smell and it has really not been bad. You may smell the meat plants once a week but usually not that often. The last 2 winters have been extremely mild which has allowed you to stay busy even in the snow. You are a close drive to Denver, the mountains, the ski slopes, Wyoming and is a great place to raise a family (even if the school district is not as good as some would like--but then what school system is living up to the expectations of the public. If you want to live in a big municipality with the small town feel, Greeley is a great place to be. Oh, did I mention that we have 2 colleges in town, AIMS Community College and University of Northern Colorado.

Cons: 1. awful job market with very few professional job options 2. very poor cultural scene 3. many jobs in Greeley pay very low wages 4. very little to do, many of the UNC students always leave on the weekends. 5. the K-12 system is a mess 6. foul smelling most of the time because of the slaughterhouses 7. very limited selection of good rests

Greeley, CO - 1/17/2008

I lived in Greeley from 1961-1985 and near there in 1999-2003. It did not smell very nice because of the nearby stock yards and Monforts meat processing. If you like cold, snowy winters and hot dry summers, it's a great place. If you read the comments section of the local paper on line you can learn alot about the people there. We liked Greeley, our familys are buried there. The best thing about Greeley is that you are very close to the mountains. Fishing, skiing and camping were fantastic.

DO NOT MOVE HERE - 1/12/2008

Extremely high racial tension between local white and hispanic population. World famous smell from one of the many local feedlots and slaughterhouses. High crime. High intolerance. No culture. No economy. I unfortunately grew up here. I left and will never be back.
