Lynchburg Sucks - 8/22/2021

Lynchburg, VA, absolutely SUCKS. I'm a native Lynchburger. I moved away when I was 5 & came back when I was 13. These people can't drive to save their lives. They don't even know how to use a round about. There's next to nothing for adults to do. Most things are geared for kids & college students. The people *tend to be* very conservative, very "Christian", narrow minded, clique-ish, arrogant, ignorant, unwelcoming, & self righteous. If you don't grow up w/ them, they the don't want you. I have no friends here. It's rare to see people from different ethnic, religious, & financial backgrounds together in public, interacting by choice. These people act very entitled. They're not as friendly as they try to make themselves out to be. Don't let them fool you. Traffic is a disaster when college students are here. As soon as I can, I'm leaving & not looking back. I HATE this place. It's boring, depressing, & a dead end.

Charming But Intolerant - 3/17/2020

There is much that I like about Lynchburg. The scenery is pretty, lots of historic architecture, well mannered Southerners. But, it is dominated by Jerry Falwell's Liberty University with 13,000 very conservative students, faculty and administration. This makes for a pretty intolerant atmosphere. Do not consider moving here if you're gay.

I don’t recommend moving here - 11/28/2019

Our family of six moved to Lynchburg 13&1/2 years ago. I have tried my very best to fit in here and being but it has been a very difficult place to come in as a newcomer. Most of the people in this town have been here their whole lives and they’re very exclusive. If they don’t know you they don’t let you in. The reason they don’t want you in is because they already have their group of friends they’ve had for years and they don’t need or want anyone more. In order to stay in their lives you have to stay in the group. They may wave and smile around here a lot this is true but that is all and you get no closer than the surface. I’ve never met so many judgmental fault finding people as I have here.As you can see the locals are defensive and can’t see the forest for the trees. People in general here don’t know how to drive, many are very slow bc they have no lives or anywhere to get to. It is too ingrown. Grow up Lynchburg!

What Happened to This Nice Little Town? - 6/8/2017

What happened to this city? It used to be such a quaint and friendly place. The environment has changed drastically and radically from a warm and caring populace to a punitive and restrictive populace. The majority of businesses in this town are customer-oriented, yet, no one is able to, or wants to service anyone. There is always a reason why someone can't do something. You're not safe on the roads because people won't follow the rules. Giving a signal before passing or changing lanes does not require a Ph.D., people. The food used to be top-notch, but nowadays, the fast food places are filthy and the food is quite nasty. You can't go to any outdoor events because you're told you can't park (but they want your money), and you can't enjoy outdoor events because every last person in this town smokes, which causes migraines and secondary lung disease. You can't go to the movies because like every store in Lynchburg, there is only one cashier. If you want to see a movie, if would be advantageous to bring a sleeping bag and get in line approximately two weeks ahead of time, because the automated ticket machine has been broken for three years. And if you're over 50, you're asked for an ID, which is totally preposterous. I see that the new trend has also made its way down to Lynchburg, in that people think it is politically incorrect to shower, so I am constantly gagging and vomiting from the bad body odors of others, or, that new smell that infiltrates the culture today. What is that smell? The nicer places to go are inundated with traffic snafus, and people who just refuse to obey the traffic laws. The public transportation system is a total nightmare, as it takes 1-2 hours to get to a destination in an exceptionally small city. The bus drivers are rude and are never on time, and the buses stinks so bad, I exited one day and vomited. People complain about larger cities such as New York, but I honestly think this is the absolute worst place on the face of the earth. People saunter through the streets, wandering aimlessly through life with neither goals or objectives. We can't freely walk the streets like we used to from the 1960s-1980s because of the insurmountable amount of crime. If we can't afford to move out of the city itself, we are forced to be pestered by people who park their cars at residences, turn on that horribly violent rap music and blast it while they are visiting, or, you can't take a nap or get the required amount of sleep because people sit on corners and rev up engines for absolutely no reason. Life is reversed because those people who work have to have funds extrapolated from their paychecks to support those who can work but will not work. Real estate agents: be advised: not everyone can live in the same types of environments. Elderly people need to be able to get sleep, and if they are extremely wealthy, they should have the opportunity to move into an area that is less crime-infested. I cannot for the life of me, ascertain why we have to cower to criminals. The entire order of society is askew. We're supposed to tolerate what is intolerable, shun intelligence, forsake bathing, and settle for rotten meat. People: follow the rules when driving. If you follow the rules and cease the opiod drugs, you won't become violent when people are driving the mandated speed limit. We are not going to drive 100 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone. I have seen people become angry with elderly drivers and zoom past them on no-passing zones and their bumpers fall off the cars because they can't wait for 1 minute, and when they nearly cause mass casualties on residential streets, they have to stop at the same red light. You cannot blow your horn because of cry babies who whine and are ready to commit a felony because they can't control or regulate their emotions. Something needs to be done about this city. It is a horrible and smelly place, filled to capacity with mean, angry, unfriendly and hostile people. What happened? And stop telling us what you can't do. You can't do because you won't do. We're not living in 1938 Germany.

Nowhere near recovering - 3/5/2017

In General Lynchburg does not have many opportunities. The professional occupations pay a dollar or 2 above minimum wage and then try to guilt you in to staying. Many companies have come and gone and the jobs that are replacing them are worse. There used to be a dollar theater which has closed. There also use to be another theater in the plaza area which closed about a decade ago. The major employer in the area is actually Liberty University which is extremely difficult to get a job through. There is high turnover for almost every business in the area. Some companies have fired employees and then hired them back as contractors so they could avoid paying benefits and still pay the same amount. The other major businesses in a 20 mile radius are also on the verge of closing. Harris Corporation has had a few layoffs since 2008. Genworth has closed and replaced by two other companies. The mall is on the verge of being empty and being transformed into whatever the university wants to do with it as well as the plaza area. I suggest everybody and anybody stay away from the area. There are no professional positions worth staying in the area for. Racism was prevalent in every position I have held in the area. The roads are always under some form of construction. The city layout in general is not functional with the spread of the university and there has been nothing to really mitigate the effects of the spread.

Wanting Something Better - 5/7/2014

I grew up in rural Minnesota, went to a Junior College in North Dakota, moved to Miami for five years and worked, After that, I moved to New York City for work and lived there for four years, and ended up in Fort Lauderdale to raise my family. We are still here twenty-two years later but have such a want to live and work in Lynchburg to put my special needs son through the law school at Liberty University. My neighborhood has changed so much that the day i was moving my son to FAU last fall for his first year, I was almost killed from a hit and run incident very close from my home. I don't care about people saying that Lynchburg is for religious people. If anyone stops and takes the time to do the research necessary before making a move, they will see that people of faith are generally happier, healthier and more giving. In order to be employable, you need to be a well-rounded person. It may be true that the wages are lower, but the cost of living is lower. Living in the extreme north and the extreme south, not much would affect me about being between, besides, I miss the fall. My difficulty is my New Jersey native wife does not want to leave, but ultimately, she may not have a choice because I can envision the company I work for going under in a couple months. Who's economy is it now, Mr. Obama?

Lynchburg - 12/25/2012

I will make it simple for everyone to follow: The good--plenty of places to eat for a smaller city, the mountains are nice, a handful of great people The bad--most of the people I encountered are fake, there are politics where it concerns jobs (hidden, but can be found), crime is a bit high for this size city (being from NY, Lynchburg has more crime, pro-rated, than Ronkonkoma, LI, NY--where I grew up), weather is very erratic, economy is weak, but the prices are a bit higher than should be here (lies come when being asked) To be fair, it is not the worst place in the world to raise a family, as long as you understand what comes with a small city (approx. 72,000 people)...

Quality of life in Lynchburg, VA - 7/18/2012

Lynchburg is beautiful with many good people. However, having lived there for nearly three years, I was very, very happy to leave. For the most part, Lynchburgers fear diversity and change. While it may be a good place to raise children for some, we found the prevailing racism, homophobia, and intolerance to be a challenge for raising children who will eventually leave home and enter the world beyond the Central Virginia region. We wanted our children to have the best start we could give them. Unfortunately, in our opinion, Lynchburg was not the place to do that.

Lynchburg is a great place to live! - 1/19/2012

I've lived in Lynchburg now for 12 years and there have been alot of changes for the good. There is so much to do here and it's a great place to live. Anyone who says otherwise is someone who would be unhappy wherever they lived. We have great restaurants live Olive Garden, Neighbors Place, The Craddock Terry, The Depot Grille, Waterstone Pizza, Panera Bread, and more coming. Target now is a super store with a full grocery store. The Blackwater Creek trails near the city are awesome. Peaksview Park has tennis courts, basketball, mountain bike trails, frisbee golf course, many baseball and soccer fields. Liberty University has some awesome mountain bike trails, SnowFlex is something that people come to from all over the east coast for year-round snowboarding and skiing, the lodge up there has a stunning view with a fireplace and cozy couches. we have nice schools, libraries, we have the Lynchburg Orchestra, several music stores, we have ice skating and hockey games. The Dollar Theatre here is really nice. It's newer and clean. There's plenty of shopping at the mall and on Wards Road. If you want more you can go to Charlottesville (or Roanoke) which are about an hour away. We have a train station that will take you to Washington DC for around $75. You can canoe on the James River. We have some small historical museum's and a children's museum. There is so much to do here if you look for it. The many wooded neighborhood are nice with low cost of living. Low taxes. Nice roadways, etc. There's alot of decent people here too. There are people here from all over. I fit in better with the non-natives, but most people are really nice. I'm from Southern California, which is a nice place to live, but the crime rate is high, the cost of living is outrageous, and it's harder to find a job there than it is in Lynchburg. Count your blessings Lynchburger's -- there are many!:)

A LOVELY MID-SIZED CITY - 1/21/2011

WE HAVE LIVED IN LYNCHBURG FOR 8 YEARS AND LOVE THE AREA. COST OF LIVING IS REASONABLE AND THE AREA IS BEAUTIFUL. LYNCHBURG IS NICKNAMED THE HILL CITY AND HAS LOVELY VIEWS. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF INDUSTRIES HERE AS WELL AS SEVERAL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. THE JOB MARKET AND HOUSING HAS NOT TAKEN AS GREAT A HIT AS OTHER PARTS OF THE STATE AND COUNTRY. WE ARE CONTEMPLATING MOVING TO FL BECAUSE WE WANT A WARMER CLIMATE AND WITHOUT SNOW OR ICE. MOST OF THE LAST 8 WINTERS HAVE BE MODERATE.

Progress, but not quite Progressive... - 1/3/2011

I'm pleased to report that many undesirable negatives identified in some of these posts have been resolved in Lynchburg within the past 2-3 years: 1. Nightlife. There is a beacon of it in Rivermont Pizza and City View. The former offers live music almost nightly in a relaxed, chill and young people-heavy environment. The microbrews are delicious and hipsters converse with lawyers. The latter offers a dance club scene that provides a remarkable view of downtown. 2. Dining & Coffee Shops: For the size of the city, both are abundant. Main Street Eatery, Robin Alexander, and the all-too-cool Dish are my faves. For coffee shops check out the Muse (a second location opened by Memorial Ave offering Friday music events)Drowsey Poet and the White Hart. You can knock out books in a few hours with these original anti-Starbucks. Love them. 4. Adventure: Should you be talented enough to spin a heli off a tabletop, then you can't beat the Snowflex. But if standard skiing is your thing, Wintergreen is only an hour away. And then the mountain biking. I have never seen so many well-kept trails in a city-owned park than I have at Peaks View. Challenging single track will keep you in shape and a smiling. As a native Pittsburgher, the L-Burg is growing on me by the month.

Jerry Falwell's Rapture Cult - 9/24/2010

Do some investigating for yourself. Investigate the who, when, and where the so called pre-trib rapture cult came from. Trace the money and how it built Liberty University. Tim Lahaye and his false pre-trib doctrine, what a joke! Christ shall return exactly as He said He would, read God's Word not Lahaye's LIES!

Crime rating is very local to inner Lynchburg - 9/22/2010

Like any other older medium size city Lynchburg does indeed have some issues with crime but, from my experience, they seem to be very tied to location. Areas to the West and South of the city offer beautiful established and also new wooded neighborhoods that are as safe as any city of this size in the US.

LYNCHBURG is for Lovers - 12/12/2009

Hate it or love it, Lynchburg, Virginia. I love the location of Lynchburg being southwest of Richmond, northwest of Roanoke(my least favorite city in Va) and south of Charlottesville. The climate is to die for. The summers may be a bit too warm for some, however the other 3 seasons are excellent imo. You must understand that Lynchburg is a very rainy city. Most of the people are very friendly, and Lynchburg is also home to the world's largest Christian university, Liberty University.

working in lynchburg - 4/16/2009

I am a native Virginian and after living for 35 years in the Mid-west wanted to move home. My older sister who spent 40 years in New York also wanted to come home. We came last fall and found 2 houses beside each other and bought them. Well after moving and the economic problems from last fall I find I need to go back to work. There is nothing for some one who has spent 27 years in the same job. I worked for Winnebago Ind. (yes the motor homes) and did a variety of jobs while there. But there are no jobs for me and I was assured by a few people that I would find a job easily. So what do I do now? Move back to Ia? Move some place esle in Va? I would appreciate any advise on this subject. I am so disappointed in my home state. I wish that I had stayed in the mid-west.

Entertainment in Lynchburg - 3/8/2008

There's a lot going on in Lynchburg if you know where to look. has several performing arts organizations downtown. The Academy of Fine Arts (www.academyfinearts.com)has both community and nationally known groups. Pianist Gustavo Romero, Harlem Gospel Choir, Peking children's Circus, Mavis Staples, Jack Klugman and more. The Renaissance Theatre always has good plays in the round. E.C. Glass Theatre regularly presents great shows. And there are great classes at the Academy, Amazement Square, and Arts and Recreation. Check out the community section of WSET to see what's happening over town.
