Incredibly Average, but Affordable - 10/28/2022

There is nothing that stands out about Marietta. Except for the fact that there are plenty of churches. You will have to own a car to get around, as most of the suburb is not walkable unless you are in the square. Many subdivisions decided not to install sidewalks either. Taxes are low, which is nice on the wallet. There's homes from 200k up to $1M+. Build your own adventure, an untouched 1970s ranch, a tract home, or McMansion. We have it all. I moved to East Cobb as a single person, and I don't really like it. But it's an ideal setting for a family. Schools are well rated. Although I went to high school here, in my experience sports are given much more attention than academics. So I'm not really sure I understand the hype around the education system.

Old Southern town that's all grown up - 7/20/2020

I lived in both Marietta and Kennesaw Georgia in the 90's. It is a traditional sold Southern city with lots of good qualities. The town square is very quaint and there are lots of shopping and good local restaurants. A great city to raise a family.

Relocating to the area - 2/22/2012

Hello Everyone: I am looking to relocate my family from Hattiesburg, MS to Marietta, GA by June 2012. I have visited the area several times and fallen in love with the atmosphere and the community. I would like to know if it is better to rent an apartment first or rent a house, please help! I am slso curious about the school district especially the Marietta City School versus the Cobb County school district. Which one is better? June 2012 is approaching fast so any information that you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and information.

Marietta questions - 1/23/2012

Hello guys i need help please im moving from Massachusetts to Marietta GA with my two children!! i just wanted to know where in Marietta is the best place to live and im talking about no crime, good parks and things to do for the kids my 4 and 6 year olds, also jobs, transportation also because i dont drive just yet, i mean just basics and of living in a save and fun enviroment please help me and please dont be negative? Affordable living but at a cost - 2/28/2010

We have lived in Marietta for over 3 years. Overall, the experience has been average. There are several aspects that might appeal to families and couples alike - relatively low taxes, accessibility to Atlanta, most conveniences within driving distance, affordable housing, relatively less congested as compared to other suburbs, decent schooling. Here's one important aspect that one should consider - Marietta is a TRAIN ZONE (sometimes it feels like a train yard depending on where you live), but most of the city is built around train tracks and train crossings. Train crossings invite train honking. For people who are sensitive to noise, this will absolutely drive you to the brink. Train honking is mandated by the FRA with certain guidelines but you cannot be sure that operators will be consistent with that. So at time it feels like the honking is incessant and LOUD especially at night. With over 40 trains passing through the city in a 24 hours period, it can feel as if you are living in a train yard. If you are a light sleeper or need quiet to fall asleep, you will find yourself fighting to find 'the' window of opportunity. Train rumbling is also felt in places but there is nothing one can do about that. There is something that the communities can do about honking but as the rules are laid out, it can be prohibitively expensive and very time consuming to get that done. There is little to none government assistance. When we moved here, we weren't neither informed of this nor to the extent of the crossings. Please make sure that you research the neighborhood and spend at least 1 hour to calibrate yourself and determine if the noise levels and frequency are acceptable.

Atlanta - Marietta Economy - 11/14/2009

We can all complain about the economy in Atlanta, but hey... The economy is bad everywhere. Atlanta is not so bad. There are lots of large companies that are headquartered here and they almost always seem to be hiring. Housing my be a little over priced, but that probably due to the economy driving the prices that high to begin with.

Travel time takes away any quality of life - 11/9/2009

I moved here from a West Michigan city, (population just under 200,000 to give you a perspective, if you're coming from LA maybe this would be great!) and it has been a terrible experience. The traffic is so awful even in outlying Marietta (West Cobb) that just to go to Kroger, 2 miles away takes 10 minutes each direction, a 6-7 mile trip at the wrong time of day, which would be anything outside of approx. 9:30a-3p, would likely be 40 mins.+. With every errand, activity and work commute taking so long, there is not much time for getting together with friends or even having friends (remember everyone else is just as bogged down as the next, no time or energy left for friendships), keeping the house in good repair or having family time. Basically you live in your car here if you want to have groceries, wear clothes, your kids in any activities, work etc. Everything is very spread out too so you will likely be driving somewhere across town to accomplish your errands or for work. Job searches will likely include the entire metro area (quite a wide perimeter) so you could easily be in for a 1 to 1-1/2 hour drive each direction to work (this is very common here). People think a 45 minute commute is good. Access to expressways is not good. Where we live we have to drive minimally 15 minutes to get to I75 and many nearby areas are much further than that. The lights are timed horribly too, adding to the problem. You will be stopped at nearly every light allowing exhaust to flow from the cars adding to the bad air here(many code orange days) not to mention the extra gas consumption and wear and tear on your vehicles. Each light is approx. 3 mins. (I'm not kidding), so you can add about 12-15 minutes to your otherwise short trip. If you dare to go out before 9:30a or between 3p-7:30p you can assume you will need to allow a good bit of additional time to get where you want to go. All in all any activities you enjoy will be hindered by the ability to get there or to have the needed items to do the activity. Since I moved here 6 years ago, an additional 1 million people have moved to the metro Atlanta area and you can sure tell by the steady traffic increase. The population continues to grow and the traffic issues have already officially been deemed unsolvable even with any amount of money. Not only do these issues take away any quality of life, but they also add tremendously the the cost of living here. I don't really think that this has been factored into the "cost of living" index for the area. That's my FYI for you.

Hotlanta & Humidlanta - 9/15/2009

Atlanta didn't receive the nickname Hotlanta by accident. The summer months are quite hot, with severe humidity. Many people will find this type of weather more uncomfortable due to the humidity than even hotter, dry places, such as Phoenix or Las Vegas.

Marietta - 6/18/2009

Ilived in the city for three years was really nice when I first moved there since then the city has grown and continues to grow. Being a suburb of Atlanta most people commute and traffic is just horrible seeing it's 20 minutes from any major highway(75 or 20). The public school system is a little behind. While housing is not that expensive property taxes are a nail bitter. The city is still having difficulty with race relations but seems to finally be on the right track. Downtown is very nice and has a southern charm ofcourse with plenty of things to do. So many parks and nature trails to choose from.Public transportation is not that good and does not runon sundays so you will need a car. Plenty of restaurants and little shops. The closes mall is in Kenessaw which is a 15 minute drive. I would encourage you visit first and then decide on moving.

transportation - 11/14/2008

our area does not have any real usable effective mass transit system. Cobb county was afraid the boogy man would ride into town on mass transit so all we have is a make believe bus system that runs whenever it feels like( cna't take it to work since I can't be sure when or if the bus will ever arrive!) and the train system has 4 legs and two spokes --- that will get you real far fast!!! Even when if you try to use mass transit the parking lots at the train stations fill up so fast that you have to drive anyway!!! oh did I mention that no one in Georgia has learned about the turn signal so you take a wild guess what the other guyis going to do and manuever accodingly!!!

The best place about where I live is the beautiful mountains I hike in weekly.Especially during the fall! There is alot to do downtown on the weekends, especially tons of festivals in the summer.

Great Place to Play Outdoors - 5/11/2008

Here you can play outdoors almost year round. There are about 6 weeks that are too hot and probably only about 3 weeks that are too cold. There are so many nature areas and parks. We can walk to one of the best schools in the state as well as to a national park where we can hike for miles and play in the creek. No where could be better.

Not yet ready - 12/29/2007

I have lived in marietta for two years and the city has some pluses and minuses. The public school system is horrible here and I would encourage you to put your kids in private. The population has exploded and the city was not designed to handle that and has no plans in the future to deal with the growth. While plenty of southern towns have changed when it comes to race relations marietta has a ways to go. Marietta has some nice parks, good restaurants and pleasant weather year round. Ofcourse it's only 20 miles from Atlanta.

My Impression after 3 years of living here - 6/15/2007

Marietta is a very beautiful Atlanta Suburb, but the traffic, much like everywhere around Atlanta is HORRIBLE!!!! (The whole area was just not planned properly). There is lot of natural beauty on the Northwest side, and lots of interesting sights for the history buffs. There is a lot of diversity here compared to my home town of Asheville, North Carolina and the cost of living is extremely low compared to AVL, NC. A nice family home 3-4 Br in North West Marietta will only cost you about 230,000-255,000. The east side is much more expensive and crowded, but still nice. We moved here because of the diversity of Atlanta Metro and the extremely low cost of living. As a racially diverse family we feel quite comfortable here, but I must say, people are MAJOR bible thumpers here. So if you don't like those kinds, hey, just ignore them and sleep in on Sundays or use this traffic free time to explore Kennesaw Battle Field. If your moving here only look for homes within 12 miles of your job or vice versa. If you work in Atlanta (15 miles South) you will spend on average 2.5 hours a day in traffic. You can find short cuts as I did, but when you do, DO NOT share them with anyone or it will no longer be a short cut.
