Great for show. - 11/28/2022

Honestly it's not as bad as people say. I moved out of state, but that's only because Oregon was the only place I knew. I don't regret moving but Oregon as a whole is a very nice place for families. There is great diversity wherever you go and always something to do (assuming you live near a major city ; Portland, Eugene, Medford, Ashland). If you're a nature person then this place is amazing. One thing I did not like was our winters. Im not a cold person. It would be nice if it snowed when it got really cold. Unfortunately it is just freezing and wet (rain). Summers are great, but our oceans are not great to swim in. WAY too cold. If you're wanting warm water then go to Southern California. While it is an extremely expensive place to live now (almost just as bad as California in terms of living expenses) we have many programs to help people getting into home. However it is easy to get kicked out if you are on drugs, underreport income, etc. Living expense is the only thing keeping this from being 5 stars.

Beautiful state mismanaged into something ugly - 4/15/2021

I have lived here for most of my life, throughout the north and southern cities. If I were rating Oregon from ten years ago, it would be 5 stars for the beauty and diverse ecosystems in your backyard. Ten years ago southern Oregon and Portland were beautiful, and the real problems only started to show themselves: obscene property prices ramping up, homeless encampments on the rise, drug use starting to skyrocket. Then five years ago the wildfires really started to show themselves, on a magnitude worse than in all the decades I have been here. In the last five years or so, illegals have been encouraged to move here and compete with the locals for jobs as an underclass which drives wages down. Basically, Oregon is a beautiful state which is being destroyed by poor forest and wildfires management so that you have entire months of summer in choking smoke and towns burning down, poor governorship which allows homeless to proliferate which brings petty crime and drugs, lack of law enforcement which allows illegals to stagnate wages. Portland, which was a beautiful modern city was allowed to immolate itself by gangs of thugs on the rampage vandalizing, marking territory, and assaulting people. It's really shameful.

**BEFORE YOU MOVE HERE: **----FROM A RESIDENT. - 7/6/2019

Please make sure you have a job lined up. I'm meeting a lot of people who are having to move back to other states or are really struggling because most places don't pay past $10--12 (even bank tellers, medical/nurse aids) and if you have a family to feed without any plans in sight moving here might not be a good idea. The housing assistance list has a long wait---so if you plan on moving here "for an easy ride" it might take a while. Most Jobs require a current Oregon ID and license/background check as well----so if you're illegal, you will have a hard time finding a job. 66% of us voted against gving illegals drivers licenses----Portland progressives might want illegals here but the majority of us DO NOT. Portland is great for progressives but the rest of the state is strict and law enforcement are quick to do their jobs without pity. We are "down the middle" as far as politics go. In a nutshell: Oregon wages are VERY low. Rents are very high and employers are picky. Property taxes are very expensive. I would not recomment moving here unless you have a career and a job lined up. I was lucky enough to be able to transfer with my company. PLAN AHEAD, don't move here on a whim. The other reviews are right about the weather----cloudy, rainy, snow isnt too bad but we get a lot of icy roads (esp around Salem)

The Best Place To Live, Play, Retire - 2/15/2017

Oregon is one of the most beautiful states I have ever been to. It has so much greenery and trees and water it makes you confused about the words "drought". You can ski then surf in the same day. I am in love with this state and never want to leave.

Nothing Beats Oregon. - 11/30/2015

I am 16 years of age, and I have lived in Oregon all my life. I love the rain and gray, it makes me happy, everyone has different weather preferences. I wouldn't move anywhere else if given the opportunity. I live in rockwood, with portland city being a short drive. It's a wonderfully fun city with coffee, book stores, food trucks, and other strange dives galore. Oregon also inspired one of the best cartoons ever on Disney XD. Best of all Oregon is beautifully green, with trees as far as the eye can see.

Brookings, Oregon - 9/29/2015

Just read your worst place to live in Oregon review regarding Brookings, Oregon. I could not imagine that you were talking about the same town. I have lived here for the past 15 years and have to say unless you love to hang out at a mall this is a beautiful, quiet, friendly community to live in. The weather here is fabulous! Never too hot nor too cold. Similar to the bay area without the high prices and the crowds. The only air quality problem here is the fact that they still allow burn days, other than that the air is wonderful. A California transplant.

Everything I Could Want - 5/30/2015

I live in Portland, Oregon. Don't believe the hype, but DO believe that it's an interesting, challenging (at times, as all cities are), beautiful city in which to live. One of Portland's great strengths is its proximity to every sort of landscape you may crave. Everything you could want, from beaches to mountains to prairie and scrub, is within a couple hours drive. I've never enjoyed another state more. I'll always want to see other places, but Oregon will always be home.

"Oregon Is "O"verated!" - 2/18/2014

I am originally born on the East Coast. I never felt at home there. However.. being from the East Coast, I didn't want to head all the way South, because of how different the people are from the East and West Coast. I didn't think I would adjust or fit in. I always wanted to move to California, but had heard you don't just move there unless you can afford to move and live there. I almost bought a beautiful manufactured home up in Norther California (Colefax) area, not far from Sacramento or San Fransisco. I heard the weather all year long was "perfect". The deal fell through and I was now faced with a limited amount of time to move from WI., where I had lived for eight years. I did not want to fear tornado's or 3 feet of snow and a foot sheets of ice any longer after last winter. I grew up with snow and don't mind it now and again a few inches. Someone told me to look into RV rentals. I never heard of this being from the East Coast. Even the Mid West does not have the RV population which is extreme that Oregon has. Especially on the Coast. I found a great..."So I Thought deal for $350.00 a month. I just had to pay electric. Free water, sewer, trash and Wi Fi. I packed in the car and headed off to Florence Oregon with my two dogs. Well.. now I regret it. I ended up in a bind once there. The beauty of the outside of Oregon and the trip there was breath taking. I admit this. The state does have its beauty that is for sure. However.. the constant never ending rain cycle is the cause of that beauty. There is a sign when you come into Oregon, "Enjoy Oregon Then Go Home" This is how the Oregonians are and think. The people here are standoffish, non trusting and had many times questioned my being there and trying to divert me back to the Mid West or East Coast. Many themselves are transplants, yet don't like outsiders moving there. They by far are not friendly people. The homeless population that you see and meth labs are many here. I know this from someone whom had experiences this on her property and when she went to the Sheriff to deal with it, they commented it is too wide spread here, we can't unless there is a fatality then they step in. The jobs here are not many and part time work is all that is offered. Snow.. can be brushed off. Rain drenches you. Snow adds to the beauty of your surroundings, rain does not. It makes for a miserable, dreary ugly day. My dogs hate it and they loved the snow and to play in it. Like kids do. Over here.. your stepping i

A town where people don't shower and are incredibl - 9/15/2013

I've finally left Portland after being seduced by the NY Times articles and short visits to check it out. Boy was I duped. I quickly grew tired of the phony shop keepers asking me about my weekend plans--you don't know me and why would you care? Tired of the icy coldness of the general public--unless your a "Proud Oregionian" they would much prefer you not move to their state. I grew tired of being asked why I moved there and fear that I might be taking a job away from one of their own. Guess what? I wasn't taking your job. I brought my own. I ate in your restaurants and hired your people. I paid property taxes and contributed to your overall economy. I'm educated with a post-graduate degree. I shower and I have all of my teeth (meth addicts everywhere). I qyuickly grew weary of the holier than though Christian fundamentalists. I've never seen so many businesses advertise the scriptures on their websites. The incidence of DUIs was appalling. I felt like I was in the Ozarks for much of the time. Portland thinks they are a big city with world class restaurants. That is laffable. No, I dont like bone marrow ice cream. Good riddance Portland. I'm heading home where the people have brain cells, shower and smile and mean it. Oh, and the majority have their teeth.

Moving from Texas to Oregon - 9/7/2012

I am fed up with Texas, the weather, the people, every last bit of it, so My husband and I have decided to move, we had considered Florida at first. However I quickly changed my mind to Oregon after my husband had mentioned it to me, I started looking online and immediately fell in love with it, absolutely beautiful. Now we had considered living on the coast but also are considering the Portland area, He is a licensed Crematory Operator and I am finishing school to be a Paralegal. What is the crime like near Portland? Are there jobs available? I read something about not being able to pump your own gas, is this true?? Also What about state taxes as in Texas we don't pay state taxes. We are planning on taking a trip up there for a much needed vacation, just the two of us but also we are going to be checking out the areas, jobs houses etc... Please any information is welcome, and any helpful websites also. Thanks!!!!

Oregon Central Coast - 7/7/2012

The Oregon Central Coast is a beautiful, economical place to live. In the rural areas most residences have their own water via wells, and their own septic systems. This reduces monthly expenses. In the last three years Elkton, Drain, Scottsburg have all gained internet and cell phone accessibilty. Elkton has fabulous Charter Schools where the students have small classes and receive the education they deserve. Reedsport also has Charter Schools. The climate in the summer is fabulous, no bugs, no humidity and great for growing vegetable gardens in Scottsburg, Elkton and Drain. July through October is full on Sun. November you can count on rain, December and January are dry but cool, the end of February through April is generally rainy, then May and June have alternating rain one week, sun the next. I have lived here for 12 years. Clean air, clean water, with many opportunities for biking, hiking, fishing, crabbing and camping. Oregon needs a migration of motivated self sufficient minded, creative people! You will find no better value for your money than real estate in Oregon. For skiiers there is Mt Hood outside of Portland and Mt. Ashland to the south outside of Medford.
