Downhill fast - 4/6/2023

I was born and raised in this state but Tennessee is going downhill fast. First, you should be aware middle Tennessee is #1 in the nation for nighttime tornados. Storms happen frequently in the summer and it’s generally humid, especially in the middle of the state where all the water pools. The issue is largely in West and Middle Tennessee, rare to see one in East. Second, you should be aware according to PopulationU.com: “By 2023, Tennessee state accounts for the fourth highest violent crime rate in US.” Memphis Tennessee was ranked the 5th most dangerous city in the US according to MoneyGeek. Bristol-Kingsport area ranked #2, Knoxville ranked #3, and Chattanooga ranked #9 in the nation for metro areas with highest rate of depression according to ceufast.com. Should you be injured, you should know Tennessee ranks #40 in healthcare according to USnews.com. I personally know several healthcare workers that complain about current conditions and low pay. According to the “State of the Child 2022”, Tennessee has the highest rate of foster care instability in the nation despite leadership claiming to care about kids. One of the biggest perks to living here is the cost of living, however, that’s changing fast. We have one of the highest sales taxes in the nation, so as inflation eats into your paycheck, your sales tax is increasing. Out of state investors are buying up apartment complexes and jacking up rent. I had a guy purchase the building I was renting and increase the price 40% month over month. Many counties have no restrictions on automobile pollution. This sounds great until you try to go for a walk. Loud trucks that spew black smoke are quite popular here especially in more rural areas. Tennessee ranks #39th in environment according to USnews.com There’s very little in the way of public transport, even in cities. Some have a small bus that’s usually not on time. It is a felony to camp on public property in the state of Tennessee. Ending on a high note, Tennessee ranks #1 in long term financial stability, however, this is because it refuses to spend money which contributes to the issues listed above.

Advise on relocating to TN - outdoorsy/work please - 11/3/2021

Some friends moved to Nashville and surrounding areas and love it.We enjoy visiting the area, but were trying to narrow down areas to relocate to in TN.We will be retired by then, but still need to work, even part time. Our 'checklist' would included:*good job market; education, hospitality, real estate, local CDL driver*outdoor activities; biking, hiking, walking, visiting historic landmarks*'climate' - conservative (2nd Amendment, we are in America)*low crime rateWe have travelled from Memphis to Knoxville a few years back. The people were amazingly friendly everywhere, we could have taken them home with us ;-) Eastern TN was great, as it was closer to the mountains, but I am hoping to get some advise from people who live in TN where some of the items we're looking for could be found.Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Looking for the opinions of lifetime Tennesseeans - 4/25/2021

Let me start with a little bit about me. First off, I am a believer in the Lord Jesus.Second, I'm from the communist state of NJ. I live near Manhattan and I can't stand it here. I've never fit in except with my brothers and sisters in the Lord. It was always a given that we would retire somewhere down south. But because of current events, relocating may be untimely pushed up. My wife and I have visited Tennessee several times and really love it. We don't want to be near Knoxville. Don't take it the wrong way, but we can't stand big cities. Also, we don't want to be by most northerners, not northerners that think like the north anyway. I'm not a people person and I don't like being told what to do, so please don't suggest an area where they are going to tell me to put on a mask. I'm looking to be surrounded by freedom loving people who love the Lord and who love country living. I'm looking to homestead on a small scale as well. We did find an area that we really liked and the people were really nice as well.... Crossville, TN. So with all that said, can any native Tennesseans help me out in case I missed an area that we would fit in???

Longtime Resident and Knoxville Enthusiast - 9/4/2020

I am a lifelong resident of the Scruffy City. I have visited many cities and states and briefly lived elsewhere but I am a big fan of the city. Knoxville is a very affordable place to live with a lot to offer. I also find the mid-sized city to be a comfortable size. Downtown has improved a lot in the past few years and is constantly growing. Being a college town brings Knoxville an infusion of energy but the city is much more than the university. Being situated on the river with mountains all around, there is a ton of outdoor recreation in the city and in the surrounding area. Knoxville has a mild climate with all four seasons. Spring brings bright greens and beautiful flowers. The Dogwood Arts Festival is a city classic. Fall brings some of the best mild weather and beautiful autumn leaves. Definitely a nice place to live where I plan to be for many more years.

Don't Waste Your Time - 1/29/2016

Horrible schools, air pollution, lakes are so polluted you can't eat the fish, mean nasty people, low pay, and overall a bad place to chose to live. I have lived here 30 years and I'm outta here.

I love Tennessee - 7/14/2015

Rolling hills, beautiful countryside, mountains, lakes, streams, parks and greenways, history, music, and a culture all it's own. Tennesseans simply laugh when referred to as "redneck hillbillies." Why? Because we're smart enough to know that a redneck hillbilly is a state of mind that can be found anywhere. Sure, we have our issues - pollution and narrow minded ignorance - but this can be found everywhere. Tennessee is what you make it.

Knoxville - 12/31/2014

There are many who say Knoxville is not a good place to live, especially people from the north. Well, it is a great place to live, especially the suburbs. The people of Knoxville are very nice, the nature, the beauty, and the overall atmosphere is great. Housing prices are amazingly low as are taxes. To my northern friends who have sour grapes, you have to understand that when you "talk down" to southern people, they don't take it very well. So, look at yourselves and your own attitude that seeps out towards them. If you treat them with respect, they will do the same for you. But, for the most part, northern people do bring with them prejudices they learned in the north about southern people that are not true. So you are probably projecting it. There is a saying in the south, "I won't put up with your uppety Yankee BS." And it's true. They won't. I moved here to the south and have loved being here for the past 20 years. I have a home in the country and a beautiful lake house that I'm selling and I'd love to sell it to a good Yankee or anyone else who wants to make the south their home. I'm staying. Don't miss the North at all.

Not a 4 season state - 8/14/2010

I researched Nashville Tn before moving here and was so sorry that everything I had read was wrong. There are only 2 seasons here hot as hell or cold as crud. There is a saying here if you don't like the weather, wait (meaning it will be worse tomorrow)

Cleveland, a place to live or a place to retire... - 4/25/2010

We've had the opportunity to see this community grow over the last 22 years. We moved here as a result of our 2nd transfer. Retirement was just a very distant thought. Now two years away from retirement would we consider retiring here? Well that is a difficult question. On one hand my beloved daughter and beloved son-in-law live here as well as my son. I love them all & would not enjoy being away from them. But on the other hand most of my relatives live in Oregon and Washington. Hmmmm. Cleveland is in the deep south and is in the Bible belt. We are Christians and enjoy our church and church family. We are not far from great fishing, rafting, camping, boating, and the outdoor list goes on. We have a volunteer symphony, a volunteer acting group in their infancy, car shows minimum of once a month in town as well as several in the surrounding 100 miles, Not far away is an award winning aquarium and in the same city is a 1 week long music festival every year that brings in the big name groups and entertainers. Florida is 5 hours away by car and coastal resorts a little further. For those who adore golf, Agusta is about 5 hours away. Spring is beautiful but laden with pollens. Places to eat are quite numerous and varied from the fast food restaurants to a resturant that serves some exotic items from around the country. We have a small mall locally and a much larger one 20 miles away. Well, that is all I want to say right now. Don't want to give away all the secrets to this little town. Stop by and look it over on your way up or down I75.

Totally Poor Health Care - 2/12/2010

I am Disabled and I wear an; A.F.O. ( ankle foot orthotic )Brace. Hanger Prosthesis & Orthotics, in my opinion, is the worst Company I have ever encountered to fit me with an A.F.O.. I have been waiting 8 months to receive a fitted A.F.O. from HANGER PROSTHESIS & ORTHOTICS and it should have taken NO more than 2 months MAX!!! I have used 2 other Companies for previous A.F.O.s; Restorative Health Services and Superior Health Services, and neither of them took over 2 months to make any of my Braces; I do have documents to support my allegation's. BJ Stagner, Fitter & Field Manager for Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics; in my opinion, does not know how to conduct business as a Professional nor does he know how to Fit me with an A.F.O.. I believe I "hurt his feelings" back in July/August 2009 and since then he has Slow Walked me on my Brace. Mr. Stagner who I feel is responsible for me not receiving a Brace, has caused me Pain, Suffering, Depression, Anxiety, and further physical and emotional problems. Due to a condition I suffer from; called "Foot Drop", has caused me to Fall To The Ground several times further injuring my body. So as a Citizen of Murfreesboro Rutherford County TN. I would suggest that No one go to Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics for the care and making of an A.F.O., "in my opinion"!!! John S. McPeak
