Augusta is quite a nice place - 3/31/2009

I've been living in Augusta for about 9 months now. Moved here from New Orleans. I should be moving out in a few months; I seriously considered staying in Augusta though. Augusta is still a nice place. It has beautiful New Englanders and other historic churches; it is not crowded but still has amenities of a bigger place. People are nice, liberal, respectful and educated even if they may be high school drop outs or blue collar workers. I am impressed that people read more books here that in the south; in general people will walk a lot. I live in the historic area close to the river and people walk a lot to go places. It is really like any other hyped up walkable place only its real people here; not a bunch of yuppies. it is also safe here; Augusta has its own bars and restaurants but for more you can also go to Hallowell just a few minutes away. there are weekly concerts by the riverfront in summer time; theres a long trail along the river. Brunswick is 30 minutes away and Portland about 1 hour away. there is a canadian community and you can often hear french; the town itself has a british feel what with the rotaries and all.[more...]

Augusta, Maine - 2/16/2009

Augusta is a pleasant small city. I feel the cost of living here in Maine is high. There is Sale Tax on everything, except unprepared food items. I have read that Maine is one of the highest taxed states in the country. Naturally heating cost have been high and the weather very cold. In Maine you have to travel for most things. Augusta is really a poor example of a Capital City. It has only recently grown in places to shop. We have one hospital, which has recented a low rating from Antham Insurance and if you choose to go there Antham will not cover as much of the expense as they will at higher rated hospitals. The nears hospital with a higher rating would be Waterville, 20 miles north.[more...]

Augusta - 6/26/2008

I moved from Cincinnati to marry a mainer and she works for the state so we moved to augusta. My 2c are as follows. Quality of life is great. No traffic compaired to any major city and crime is low. Also you can buy a 150k house with land and it is not run down at all. It is no good for night life. Only place I found was hallowell just south for pubs and music. I most likely wont live in the down town of agusta but the surrounding areas are great and only a 15 min drive. If you are wanting to raise kids and live a slower pace life this is a great place for it. I do have to go to portland to party. You can laso get into boating because there are lakes all around augusta. Not a bad place to live over all. Not high profile but safe and eazy living.[more...]

welfare what?? - 6/16/2007

the quality of life here in Distgusta is going down hill. we brought in alot of out of state corporate jobs, that get tax relief, all paying minimum wage. with maine's high tax rates, its hard to make it by around here. dont let the statistics fool you. many are on welfare here, even if they are working. the roads are horrible, and last I knew, it was estimated 1 sex offender per 10 households. there are only 92 full time dentists in the entire state. and trying to get any form of insurance in this area.. psh. we don't have any. so hopefully you don't mind gumming it. there is nothing to do around here. we have 2 bars, one is for homosexuals, and the only place open at night is wal mart. there is no culture or life here. no muesuems, except one that is extremely boring. our schools are facing consolidation right now as well, which may have a big effect on education,etc. but oh well, the education here isn't that good. the only good thing I can say about this place is that the university of maine at augusta was rated one of the best music schools on the east coast. its just too bad that theres only a few select places for those musicians to play in the entire state. theres so much more I could say about this hell hole, but it'd take too much of your time.
