Think Twice Please - 10/5/2020

I've lived here since 1996 [when I was 9] and have to say it used to be a five-star state. Great views, fairly average cost of living.110.0 in Denver 12 years ago on this website. CO Springs was only 107. Today, you will spend 6-15x income on a home, never get up to the mountains, be surrounded by others who eat up the backcountry, leaving nothing but shredded powder for weeks. The housing prices and rents are so high now that we barely sit below California in terms of cost of living. My former coworker bought her home in Boulder for $110k in 2001. Adjusted for inflation that is only $190k. Today, it would sell for >$700k. The same things that make the idea of Colorado great (what it was in 2000) are what drives up the prices and makes finding the true West impossible in this state. We now have as many people coming in as leaving, at least right before the pandemic. If you want to be here plan on: a) having more than one job unless you are in teh < 15% who make more than 70k [that is the 60th percentile for a two income family here], b) spending $1400-$2100 on rent or housing [cheaper means broken everything in an apartment from 1936 that gets renovated this year and sells for $2100], c) spending more on groceries than listed here (food prices skyrocketed with the pandemic and new surge of people who don't think before they act), d) not putting your kid into great schools [DPS was almost defunded 2x in the 2010s and Adams county was nearly defunded 2 years ago with El Paso barely funding schools at all], e) likely living in a gentrified area unless you are a millionaire (Pueblo, Fountain; South Co Springs) where [true story] you may end up in witness protection because the median income is < the minimum wage, f) never actually having time to spend 4 hours reaching the mountains, g) paying growing taxes, h) barely making it by on a middle-class income, i) getting laughed at when asking for cost of living increases beacuse "it wasn't a problem when I was a young moron with daddies money." The list goes on and on. You are better off thinking it through and realizing that your tech job is more likely to move to Madison where UoW, Chicago University, Illinois at Urbana, KU, and Wash U in St Louis are a 1-2 day drive than in a state where the best ranked school has the highest suicide rate and everyone else is much worse than what they pay for. You will get called back to the office. Ask government employees about the extensive research done with regards to the

Colorado is Awedome - 8/8/2019

I’m from Oklahoma and I absolutely love Colorado!!!! I plan on moving around the Castle Rock or Monument area once I retire from the military. Housing is expensive in Colorado, but I’m willing to pay more for housing to get away from this God forsaken state. I don’t believe people from Colorado know how blessed they are with the natural beauty and activities available in their state to comment negatively about it. In Oklahoma it feels like a cult and prison. I grew up in Oklahoma. The only thing good I can say about it is that the state is the cheapest to live in. So if you don’t mind tornadoes, drugs, and fat skanks that are determined to destroy any kind of happiness you might have solely because if they aren’t happy you shouldn’t be either then Oklahoma is the perfect state for you. Education here sucks as well and we rank #50 in teacher pay. So if your educated in Oklahoma you will be punished for it. I see people complaining about traffic and Colorado being crowded. The eastern part of Oklahoma has the most natural beauty (by the Ozarks and has lakes) even then it’s in no comparison to Colorado. Not to mention there are a LOT more activities to do in Colorado. You can buy land in Eastern Oklahoma for the same amount they are selling land around the Castle Rock and Larkspur area. So why wouldn’t I move?

Outsiders ruined this state for me (A NATIVE) - 5/31/2019

I am a colorado native. I was born here and have lived here 24 years. I used to love it here, 10 years ago i would have given it 4 stars, But ever since it was THE FIRST state to legalize weed (not against it, i smoke it) but the state has changed so much because of it being the first one to do that so it gets a 1 star. It has mad the state populated, there is development everywhere (when it used to be so open), the mountains are crowded and dirty now, the traffic sucks, its getting more and more expensive and colorado doesn't pays well at all, you need 3 jobs just to barley be on your own, people are rude, everyone keeps moving here, its not even famous for mountains anymore, every tourist, new person living here, and people i hear on social media, and when i go out of town when they find out I'm in colorado ask about the weed. That has ruined my state and i hate it and what its become, and what everyone moving here has done to it. I went to cali for my 5 year anniversary for a week, and everyone there when they asked where I was from asked about the weed, when i landed in denver, it smelled like factories, gas and weed, it used to smell good like mountains and pine trees. Its not the state i used to love. And it never will be. Theres nothing here for me except my pets, mom sister and boyfriend. As soon as i get the money I'm out of here because everyone moving here for the weed has made impossible for natives to live here and are chasing them out. Thats whats happening with me

colorado sucks - 1/3/2018

Landlocked. Nearest beach is very far away. Brown. Nothing is green for half of the year. The high altitude and dry weather can reak havoc on your skin and body. Unpredictable weather -- can be hard to plan things. Mediocre Mexican food Tract housing galore Traffic can be brutal at times Roads are very poorly designed and businesses lack proper enter/exit areas Tailgating. You're not in the fast lane and driving 10 MPH over the speed limit, yet someone just has to be on your bumper. Very small backyards in many areas (lack of privacy) Sleepy cities. Even for its size, Denver isn't very happening. Yuppies. Wow, I've seen a lot of 'em. Sausage fest. I like women. While people are generally friendly on the surface, they tend to be standoffish and reserved. This is a fairly common complaint.

Colorado is an amazing state. This weekend we went to Bishop's Castle. We also drove over to Leadville, Buena Vista, Salida, Canyon City, and a few other beautiful cities as well. We drove through on a weekend!

Close to perfect - 6/20/2014

While everybody is marvelling about 'the sunshine state' California, I find Colorado a real champion in terms of climate and health. The very high level of sunny days makes it even fun to enjoy the occasional rainy day because you know that tomorrow the sun will be shining again. The high altitude living has beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system and the intensity of the sun rays which in turn is good for Vitamin D synthesis, helping the immune system. It is a very dry climate which makes the summer heat much more bearable, albeit in down town Denver the summers can get really, really hot because of the lack of vegetation and the tarmac areas.

Very High Cost of Living - 4/21/2014

I have lived in Fort Collins for almost 11 years now. The weather is nice but the cost of living is horrible. Everything is going up and the prices of homes is high. I have owned 4 homes here. It takes 2 people to work with tons of overtime to survive. The food here is also bad. I agree with the statements of some of the people...not very good food. I dont like living in a College town, alot of drinking, parties, and the downtown is just full of college kids. The property taxes are some of the highest in the nation with very small land. I love the mountains and fresh air, but we are going to move because the cost of living is to much and cant save anything. The roads are horrible in town. For all the tourist we get and the taxes we pay, I would think we would have better roads, and lower taxes. Its great if your young and love the night life here, alot of bars and drinking. I think I am just getting to old for this place. We moved on the outskirts of town hoping for a peaceful living, and it was not to be...college parties still everywhere even in the expensive homes. The economy has drivin more and more people to live under one roof. Its not the same anymore....off to a cheaper place. I will miss the mountains. Pay is not good here, but everything is much higher in price than most other cities. I will leave this town for the young at heart.

critters - 11/21/2013

Colorado is a great place to live if you love outdoors and/or prefer more cosmopolitan living. We have mountains, plains, even a little desert, plus cities like Denver and Colorado Springs. We have suffered some growing pains with lots of people moving in from other states - more crowded highways, more crowds in general, more encroachment on open land, etc. The biggest problems come from folks who want Colorado to be like their "old places". So, a word of caution. If you don't want wild life in your yard, Colorado may not be the best place for you. You will want to educate yourself about wild life, since foxes, racoons, coyotes, deer and the occasional bear, cougar, skunk, elk or moose, do wander into more populated areas as their habitats shrink. Rabbits, mice, rats, squirrels and prairie dogs are just about everywhere. If you want to live in the country or up in the mountains, there will be wild life and they will come into your yard. Please choose a city or town to live in if you don't like how farming smells. It may not always smell wonderful, but we all like to eat. Horse and/or cattle operations may not be the best neighbors for folks with sensitive noses, either.

I Didn't like Denver - 6/27/2013

This is strictly my opinion after living in Denver for 17 years. Here's why I didn't like Denver - the "mile high" (5,280 ft above sea level) altitude was very difficult to adjust to. Also, with Denver being a mile high, it is considered semi-arrid, the truth is that you can't possibly drink enough water to stay hydrated and there isn't enough moisturizing lotion in the world to keep you from drying out like a mummy and trust me, your hands will look like they belong on a mummy. I found the people to be mean. Forget trying to make friends if you aren't in one of the "clique" neighborhoods; Parker, Highlands Ranch, Roxborough. Denverites are shallow and phoney (sp?). My spouse retired and we left Denver never to return!

I want to relocate to Colorado from Louisiana so badly its not funny. Lousyana is more like it here. Sorry to say but the weather sucks, hurricanes, humidity, and mosquitos too. Plus there are no tech jobs to really speak of, and the pay here is really low, like terribly low.
