| Think Twice before you move to Corpus - 7/20/2007
The data provided by this web site and others will not provide you with a realistic view of the City of Corpus Christi. Because the state and local taxes (especially property tax), the high cost of personal insurance coverage for home and auto, and the hidden costs of education are not included in these statistics you will be greatly disappointed when you arrive to this city. This city has little competiton for groceries. One chain dominates the entire town, hiking up food prices. The lack of prosperity in Corpus is connected to the lack of industry (other than tourism). Jobs are attainable but unless you are a lawyer or a doctor you will most likely be working for $5.15 an hour. The crime is also much worse than published. This would include both violent and non violent crime. The unrepaired streets, schools and abandoned buildings are an eye-sore and a safety issue. Unleashed dogs and drug dealers wander neighborhoods. You will just end up wondering where your enormous tax dollars go. People leave this city the minute that they graduate from college or can get a transfer. Think twice before you make the move.[more...]

| Housing is NOT cheap in Corpus - 5/4/2007
If you think housing is cheap Corpus, think again! You will find any extra money left over from your mortgage eaten up by high property taxes and high insurance rates. Corpus gives you very little for your money when look around at roads needing repair, high crime rates, overcrowded schools, and monopoly grocery stores. If you want to go to work you better be sure that you are a doctor or a lawyer otherwise you are looking at little opportunity and minimum wages. Corpus cannot keep college graduates because they move out of the area to find decent jobs after they graduate.[more...]

| corpus sucks - 3/20/2007
I have visited corpus. It sounds like a great place. So fun and tropical. When I got there, the place is swarming with illegals who no speckon the english.
The beach, YUCK! Trash, oil, questionable floating stuff???
But, I put on my game face and decided to make the best of it.
I waded in the water for a moment and was knocked off my feet several times by the constant rip tide. So, I did my best to keep to the surface. I noticed a few jellyfish around me, so I went out a little father, to get away from them. I was DETERMINED to boogie board! I was mid-body deep in water, and the jellyfish attacked! I felt painful stings all over my back, legs and arms. The tip tide made it very hard to come back to the shore, and on the way, I stepped on a stingray! Thank God it didn't barb me! I felt it slip out from under me feet, and saw it swim close to the surface when it made it's escape.
I brought vinegar, in case of jelly stings. My Great Grandpa always warned me to do that. Thank God I listened to him! It relieved the some of the stings from the jellyfish . I have scars from the stings, 10 years later. I will never go to Corpus again! I found out later, that Corpus is a strange bay, it has a very unpredictable surf and rips all the time.Junk washes in from the ships and boats. It is FULL of jelly fish...I don't care WHAT some people say! It's jellyfish season from March thru October! Over 100 different species, including the deadly Box jelly, Man-of-war and a few others that are deadly. It's a popular spot for shark sightings and stingrays. Wish I had known that before I went there![more...]

| Education Statistics are misleading, perhaps inacc - 2/21/2007
As the husband of a CCISD teacher and parent of three children who have survived the CCISD system, I have to laugh at the 15 to 1, student - teacher ratio. Are they counting the custodial and lunchroom staff, the administrators, specialist's, para's and secretaries at each school, the bus drivers and perhaps even the district employees who work at the downtown puzzle palace? None of my children have ever had a 15 to 1 ratio. None of the classes my wife was ever responsible for had a 15 to 1 ratio.
It was Will Rodgers, Mark Twain or someone else who stated: "Figures don't lie, but liars figure." I would urge anyone using the data to verify it independently by speaking with teachers privately. I also advise the folks at BestPlaces to cross check their data.

| Love this weather! - 2/19/2007
As the entire Country is either have flash floods, 12 feet of now, fires, tornados, hurricaines and worse, we enjoy beautiful year around weather. Over 30 years ago our area experienced a pretty severe hurricaine which had contractors building safer and sturdier homes when replacing those destroyed. Out of everything bad something good can happen and Corpus Christi has been working and continues to work to improve infrastructure, boom has been on for new homes and more people come to our area when they discover our Corpus Christi which the secret is out that we have lots of opportunities and year around fantastic weather surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico. Affordable living, friendly people and lots of growth will be taking place when more and more visionaries find us.[more...]

| Visionaries Wanted Here! - 2/19/2007
I bought my Island home and moved to Corpus Christi, TX 5 years ago because I saw a City with great opportunities if you came with an open mind, an entrepreneurial spirit and vision.I grew my business. Made friends. Increased my investment in my home and am now looking to buy a bigger home. This is a great City with still very reasonable home prices to be either right alongside of or very near the Gulf of Mexico. Terrific restaurants and inexpensive fun activities taking place all over the City which are listed in our Weekender section of our Caller Times.Volunteer activites and welcoming to get involved whatever your interests. Friendly folks who will return a smile if you have one to give. Great distance to travel to San Antonio, Austin, Houston or even Laredo for a day or weekend, yet not live in all the hustle and bustle. Anyone can go to an over populated area that pays more than our City in various careers, find you need to live outside the City because you can't afford to live near your work and then be stuck in traffic every day for hours. Or, you can improve the quality of your life and come to our City where you can kick back, enjoy the beach, bring your positve input with you and leave the comparisons of where you came from behind.[more...]

| Corpus Christi isn't Utopia, but what city is? - 2/6/2007
True, CC has its problems but overall it's a nice place to call home. Mild winters, relatively low cost of living and mostly friendly locals makes CC an inviting and hospitable location. The local Chamber Of Commerce and City Council have reasons for wanting to keep its growth slow, too much all at once would make it a boom town and it would lose its charm. Nobody wants or needs a Miami West.[more...]

| corpus is not a good place to live - 12/16/2006
this is the worst city ever. i have lived here for 2 years and i hate it. i cant stand the heat, it is december and it was 81 degrees yesterday. no where to go shopping except the mall. no one has any style down here. the only nice place to go if you have a family is by the bay. the cost of living is low because they pay people $5 or $6 an hour at every job unless you have a college degree. the people here are all slow and not intelligent. the doctor's offices make you wait at least an hour every visit at every office. the tap water smells horrible like dirt and ocean. there are few nice neighborhoods, alot of houses look run down or boarded up. alot of crime, never quiet, obnoxious people, and they all have a million kids with a million different parents. no jobs at all unless you are a laborer, want to work at the oil refinery, or be a nurse.[more...]

| Corpus Christi - 9/17/2006
Mild climate year round with high humidity daily. Rivers and lakes are scarce, however the ocean and bays are abundant and popular for fishing/beach-going. Flat terrain, few trees, not the most scenic. Mid-size city with adequate night-life, hotels and dining. Very high property taxes, likewise insurance (auto & home) are outrageous. Private schools becoming more popular, roads & public schools are not what you'd expect for the high county taxes.[more...]

| easy town - 9/11/2006
Corpus is a very easy town to live in. It's big enough but not too big, good people, casual and relaxed, with spectacular winters. Many species of migratory birds make their winter habitat here. There are also stifling summer heat, the rare hurricane or unnamed deluge, bugs, and no classy entertainment or cultural events to speak of. If you're family-oriented, hate fuss, and love the sea and all that means, this is the place for you--if you can take the heat. You know you're from Corpus if you've moved away and come back. When I left a few years back (sick of the heat, hurricanes, and what I thought was boredom), I missed the gulf breeze and the birds. I desperately missed the tolerant, friendly folks, and I hated having to wear regular clothes (we live in shorts and slaps, sweats in the winter, down here). I was back in 7 months, so happy I could hardly stand it. The place gets hold of you. Daily life here is simple and just plain nice, and Mother Nature provides plenty to appreciate.[more...]

| ambivalence - 9/10/2006
The place gets a hold on you. A local joke is that you know you're from Corpus if you've moved away in disgust and then moved back. Corpus is an easy place to live if you can take the heat 6 months out of the year and don't particularly want to do much but hang out at the beer joint, eat so-so food at a franchise, go fishing, or brave the obnoxious people at local festivals and the malls. It's hard to get to know nice people because the natives are insular. The winters are spectacular, especially if you're a bird-watcher. Fantastic police and fire depts, still peace-keepers, to a person heroes during hurricanes.[more...]

| Texas Gulf Coast Living Still Affordable - 8/24/2006
Corpus Christi Texas is one of the best kept secrets in the United States.
If you or anyone is interested in waterfront property that is still affordable this is the city to really consider. Over the next two years the coastal bend is going to boom. The addition of Packery Channel is just the start for this laid back Gulf Coast community. Packery Channel gives Corpus direct access to one of the best deep sea fishing areas in the U.S.

| hot, and boring - 7/13/2006
If you like 95 degree heat that feels like 110 because of the humidity, you'll love Corpus. If your idea of interesting things for your kids to do includes little to nothing, except get each other pregnant at 15, then this is the place for you.
Now, I may be ranting (ok, i know I'm ranting), but I've grown up here. That may be why i don't like it. And evidently I'm not alone. I was reading a local small business periodical a few weeks ago, and came across an article explaining the new "I (Heart) my CC" ad campaign the city is paying for. The author was complaining about, well, residents complaining about Corpus. Evidently all we as a city need to do to combat gangs, teen pregnancy, crime, heat, mosquito infestaion, crappy jobs, a rotting downtown, etc, etc, is a "full scale marketing campaign" to make us feel better. Somehow, I don't think the new bumper stickers on the back of every police car, the TV commercials, street banners, and print ads are going to do it.
But hey, maybe I'm wrong. As for me and my family, we've got our "Countdown to Moving".[more...]
