Edwardsville IL - 3/27/2010

Edwardsville is a real nice town. Safe, clean, friendly. I graduated from SUIE in 2004. the great part about Edwardsville are the scenic drives, beautiful SIUE campus with much to do, bike trails and it's only 20 min from St. Louis. The elementary schools are great and the High school is beautiful! On the down side, there are no jobs there and the few jobs that are in the area don't pay much. The police there are very annoying as well.[more...]

Illinois is cutting funding for schools - 3/21/2010

The Illinois state government is cutting funding for schools. They are not just cutting a small amount. The Oakwood township school system is being cut $800,000 this coming school year and this is causing a huge cut in programs and teachers. [more...]

Nature and recreation - 10/2/2009

As a native Illinoisan I may be a little prejudice but I think our state has a great parks system which include many different activities. Our state parks in particular offer many options for outdoor activities from hiking, to boating, horseback riding and just plain relaxing. There’s nothing like strolling through the woods or exploring waterfalls at Starved Rock on a weekend afternoon.[more...]

Illinois - 8/12/2008

Aside from the Chicago area, the housing costs are reasonable in Illinois. There are many cities with areas surrounding that provide affordable living, education and lower crime rates. The state of Illinois is a wonderful place to live with Mid-Western values, people who are friendly and helpful. The climate is safe without any major problems concerning natural disaster such was earthquakes, hurricanes...we have the occasional tornado, but there are good warning systems in place.[more...]

New companies building in Decatur, Illinois - 4/23/2008

I was born and raised in Decatur, IL. It was a great city growing up. In fact, the population was near 100,000 back in the late 70's early 80's. Decatur has a lot of potential. With Firestone closing amongst other companies in the Decatur area, I dont see why newer companies pick Decatur to start their roots. The city is actually very beautiful with great parks and a wonderful lake. The city has a lot going on the north end and out by the airport the last time I went through this city. I really think Decatur is to overlooked by newer companies and they might consider checking out this wonderful city. Practically centered right in the middle of the state. Once the home of the Staley Bears (Now Chicago Bears) This city has a lot of potential and plenty of possiblilties. Why not share these possibilities with new companies. Large new companies. I could never figure out why the didnt do more with the waterfront by Neslon Park. Adding little store fronts and cafes. Even a gambling boat that stayed docked. Adding a nice large well known hotel or two in Downtown. I now live in Atlanta, GA for 11 years. Lived in Tampa, FL prior for 6 years. The times I have been back or through the city I see a great city sitting and waiting for something so fantastic to happen to it. New businesses I think would be happy in this city. Once the new businesses happen this city, I mean could be the heart of downstate Illinois. A city in Illinois that has such potential outside Chicago. Bloomington/Normal has grown a lot. I think people should know about the possibliities this city has to offer and could offer more if companies and businesses land in Decatur, Illinois. It sounds like Decatur needs a new city council. They need a council that brings in these new things. You wait and see, it will happen. I think a lot of people should check out this small city and see the potential. You may say Decatur is a little boring, but that is because the city council has a lot to do with some of that. Decatur needs to be put on the radar for many reasons. Those reasons have just been mentioned. Thank you for your time. Patrick MIller[more...]

ripple effect - 3/26/2008

My husband and I moved here, approximately 1 year ago, from Michigan. We were hoping to stay for a long time, but are feeling the money crunch again. In MI. he was in the auto industry and was lucky to find employment here, but due to the type of work he does, the future is bleak. I am busy researching for a final destination. We like it here but housing and property taxes are at least double compared to the area we lived in MI. People are friendly and there is so much to do, we are close to Chicago and its amazing. We hate to leave. Traffic stinks no matter where you go, was not prepared for that. What appeared to be a stable place close to home is now showing signs of despair.[more...]

Chicago's Millenium Park - 1/12/2008

One of the greatest new urban creations anywhere is Millenium Park. The cloud gate sculpture is exceptional and the Pritzker pavillion by Frank Gehry is a wonderful place to take in a concert on a summer evening. In the winter there is skating at the McCormick rink next to the delightful park cafe. This newly renovated section of town has greatly revitalized the Chicago loop and the theater district. Lots of great restaurants and tons to do. Be sure to tune in WTTW channel 11's restaurant review show "Check Please" for recommendations.[more...]
