I have never lived anyplace before where there are such strong dividing lines of race. Blacks live on the west or south side, whites live on the north side, nobody wants to live on the east side. There needs to be integration in this city to stop the hatred.[more...]

Don't do it! - 7/27/2009

I hate this place! I have lived in NYC, Phoenix, Southern California, Northern California and of all of the places I have lived this is my least favorite. I was expecting a cool car culture kind of place and instead people are stuck up and full of them selves, I don't get it! Might be okay if you have a family, are not interested in the arts or culture or food or travel or interesting conversation and want a cheap place to hide.[more...]

quality of life - 6/16/2009

I grew up in Indiana in the 80s and moved out in 1999. In some ways I miss it. The people are friendly. The cost of living is very "realisitic" and reasonable. And Indianapolis is a growing city and 13th largest in the US. But it seems lately that is where the good ends. Most of Indiana is just flat, dull and nothing to do. Good paying jobs are few and far between. And it has only a few big business Fortune 500 headquarters based here compared to many states. The state must do more to attract future industries and younger workers. Indiana in some ways, is a great place, but is often politically close minded and regressive. It seem as though the state's policymakers either dont care about the state's future or are too shortsighted and narrowminded to think outside the box. But I guess Indiana's problems are the same as everywhere else. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give the Hoosier state a 5. I would rather live there than in places like KY, WV, OH, MI and those great plains states.[more...]

What happened to the four seasons? - 4/26/2009

In a space of three days, we went from 30+ temperatures to 80+ temperatures, there are no springs or falls in Indianapolis. Only winter and summer, if you like to live with your heater and air conditioner on, this is the place. [more...]

Indy climate as compared to Chicago. - 4/16/2009

Comparing Indy to my old hometown of Chicago,Indy has a milder "Midwest" climate. It has a much more extended spring and fall season, giving way to a greater transitional period before winter and summer. That is good news for gardeners! The climate in Indy really starts to change south of Lafayette In. Areas north of Lafayette IN seem to have similar weather patterns as Chicago.[more...]

Don't hate the smaller city - 2/23/2009

I have lived several places in my life so far: Los Angeles, London, etc...but I grew up in Indiana for the most part and went to college in Indiana. I am now a professional interior architect in Indianapolis. There are many professional jobs out there based on your college degree, so I am not sure what everyone is complaining about. It is a great city that also has the quaint suburban life if you want it. Mass transit is in the works, and with the Superbowl coming in 2012, downtown is blowing up with new companies, amazing new restaurants, and new hotels like the Conrad. Of course it is not New York City - go there if that is what you want. But for the best of everything, Indy is great. You can work in the city, live in the suburbs, and not have to work around the clock to be able to afford your place. However, with the cost of living and a great new airport, i would rather live here and travel than live anywhere else.[more...]

I love my city. - 2/16/2009

I love Indianapolis. I've lived here for most of my life. I've also lived in Chicago, Columbus, OH and Detroit. Compared to the other cities, Indianapolis is great. It's not so big I cant think and not to small. I love thw weather here. It's not to hot in the summer and not to cold in the winter. It's perfect. However we do lack in diversity. Indianapolis can be a great place to live for some people, I just don't think it's the place for me. There is a lot to do here; museums, theater, sports, dining, shopping, etc. I've lived in the midwest for a long time and I think it's just time to explore something different.[more...]

South of Indianapolis - 10/29/2008

We are considering a move to the Indy area in the next few months. My husband is from Indiana orginally but hasn't lived there since college. I've never lived there but am willing to give it a shot! His job will be south of Indy in Shelbyville and I'm wondering where are good places to live. We'd like a golf course community and I don't want him to have a long commute, so the northern part of Indy is out of the question. We're moving from Atlanta and I think the housing prices will be favorable (although in this market who knows). Can anyone speak to Greenfield, Greenwood, New Palestine or other areas? We don't want a lot of land, just a suburb type lot - 1/2 acre or so. Any recommendations on areas to look at? Thanks for the tips![more...]

Climate - 7/7/2008

Indianapolis definitely has four seasons. The winters are not brutal, but when it snows, the roads are not cleared as well as other places I have lived. The summers are great if you love the outdoors. Daylight lasts until 9:15pm and around 9:45pm is when the skies will just become dark.[more...]

So the wife and I live in Indianapolis, IN. And I just am bored with Indiana now. I want to go where the wife came from - California. I have lived in 11 states and moved away from Indianapolis to San Francisco, to Chicago, to Michigan, and back to Indianapolis. I really love it here and can't believe everyone on this site that like to complain about this city. Let me tell you something - there are great areas of every town. I talk to people everyday that gripe about the culture, but have never been to the museums or shows. This is a really clean city to live in, with GREAT schools, ultra low housing costs, and fairly cheap taxes. The roads are almost the best in the country. You can actually save for retirement and pay a house off in 5 years. There are plenty of jobs to be had and Indianapolis actually has a good technical core that is developing at a good pace. True it is cheap to live here and you can fall into a 35K, but you can do that anywhere. And the people are NICE. You can get stuck at a 4 way stop and all the people wave at each other to go (no you go...). I watched three college kids help an old lady in the parking lot the other day. And they called her "MAM" on top of it. The reason that the bar scene is not the greatest and the clubs don't boom every night is because that is not the kind of people Indianapolis hosts. If you actually want to be able to save 35-50 percent of your income and have a great, safe, enjoyable life with friendly people, a low cost of living, and mostly tolerable weather - Indianapolis is the place for you. If you get bored - the 50K you save every year over NY and LA buys a lot of vacations to anywhere you want to go.[more...]

Wonderful Low Cost Housing and Cost of Living - 4/6/2008

I have lived in the Indianapolis area for 9 years and was born and raised in Indiana. I have lived in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida. Although, different cities and states have their pluses, I have found Indianapolis and the surrounding areas to be very accomadating. I now own a real estate company, and whether you are investing or buying an individual home to live in, you can get a great place for less money compared to many cities across the nation. The surrounding counties are good as well. I can speak of Hamilton County the best because I live near there on the Marion County side and do business in Fishers, Noblesville, and Carmel. I have friends and family that live and work in these areas of Hamilton county, which has award winning schools and great places to raise a family. The cost of living is relatively inexpensive compared to many areas of the country as well. Yes, we do have some winter weather that we don't like, but the snow fall isn't as bad as people think. A few days out of the year become difficult to travel, but some years it might be 10 days and other years it might be 5 days. I have been guilty of compaining about weather no matter where I live, the change of seasons are nice. I will always compalain about winter because I don't like being cold, but overall, it isn't bad.[more...]
