Comprehensive review from a lifetime resident - 2/1/2021

Aesthetically, a nice town surrounded by lovely countryside. Some of the big chain stores like target are fairly far away (the closest “big city” is about an hour’s drive) but honestly, I’ve lived here my whole life and I’ve never suffered from the lack of shops. Anything you need you can get here. The most common complaint is that there’s a lack of things for young people to do. There is a fair amount of events, but few businesses etc cater to young people. Never bothered me, but I’m a quiet type. If you want a busy nightlife, look somewhere else. Quite safe overall, we do get some property theft but by and large you can go for a walk by yourself most places in the city in the middle of the night without being in any danger. Culturally, it is very conservative and Christian. Might be a plus for you, but it does make life harder for lgbt people and poc. There are a few signs of positive change on that horizon, as the local college grows and brings a bit more progressivism with it, but it’s still an extremely republican place overall. Rate of growth is reasonable, neither overwhelming nor stagnant. Surprisingly good selection of thrift shops, and a spacious library. I’ve never had any difficulty getting a job—some of the jobs are definitely a “who you know” thing, but it’s not hard to get to know people. Excellent air quality, but the allergy season is terrible because of the high local cedar levels. Very very few natural disasters in the area—the only thing we’re really prone to is flash floods, and those are easy to avoid once you learn how. Day trip distance from a lot of cute small towns, including the tourist town of Fredericksburg which has a lot of gift shops and boutiques. Pretty decent medical service—Peterson hospital isn’t great and I’d recommend the Fredericksburg hospital instead, but since we have a lot of retirees in the area we have a fair amount of doctors and specialists. Many many deer, so invest in a quality grill guard before you come and ideally buy a truck or suv. The deer are friendly, but they’re not very wary of vehicles. Oh, and a plus of this area—we have a lot of trophy ranches in the surrounding countryside, so you’ll often see zebra and buffalo grazing by the side of the road when you go for a drive! You don’t have to pay to go to a zoo if you live here. Tl;dr: charming and very livable town with a strong republican bent, if you’re a rich republican retiree you’ll likely adore it, if you’re a young minority college student you’ll probably find it livable while you’re in college but not great long-term, sadly.

Crime is increasing in Kerrville - 12/2/2016

It is not the same town as 10 years ago. There has been recent gang activity and shootings in the area. It is off the beaten path which is encouraging crime. Stay closer to the I35 corridor.

Tivy High School - 12/14/2011

My son is a Senior at Tivy High School and I must say I have been highly impressed wtih the school. It has gotten much better in the last two years with a change in administration. The discipline is strict and the principal is kind of a "non nonsense" type of guy but really has the kids best interest at heart. He is exactly the type of person you wht watching out for your kids. Apparently the teachers really respect him. As for the teacers, they are good for the most part. There are a few that were probably good 20 years ago but have not changed with the times. The sports program is amazing and that the school is known for but the other programs seem to be high quality alos. I would certianly recommend Tivy to anyone moving to the hill country.

nice place to live but too hot in summer - 5/30/2011

Kerrville is a great small town to live and raise children or retire. The area is beautiful, the winter temps gets cold but not for long. The summers are hot, mid 90s to over 100 degrees all summer. The heat is the reason I'd like to move away. Crime in Kerrville is low, I think because of our law enforcement, the crime rate stays to a minumium. The problem is it's a small place so not many places to work but if you don't mind a commute and can find employment in San Anotonio that might work out for you. Schreiner Universtiy is a small college in Kerrville, it has a beautiful campus.

Love the views and wildlife in Kerrville, TX - 9/5/2008

I love the views as I'm driving aroud. I really love the wildlife around my tiny house: deer, turkeys, sheep, squirrels, antelope, all kinds of birds. I love watching their antics; they make me laugh because they are so much like people. People are very friendly here, everyone dresses very casual, we do need a few more popular stores such as Target and SAM's. Weather is good, better than Houston, TX.

Best in the Texas Hill Country - 4/6/2006

The elevation averages 1650-1900 ft. here depending upon which hill you live on. It's usually 5 degrees cooler than San Antonio with lower humidity. The plant hardiness zone ranges from 8a to 7b. Exceptionally scenic. Healthy environment -- top scores in air and water quality. Pop. 20K and growing too fast. Largest city in the Texas Hill Country. Too many pickup trucks everywhere/bad traffic/poorly maintained streets(particularly Hwy16).

Nice Hill Country Town - 2/2/2006

Kerrville is a pleasant town an hour nw of San Antonio. The pretty Guadalupe River runs through the town. A great, small University is here (Schreiner Univ.). A nice getaway from San Antonio. Surrounded by hills and 5-7 degrees cooler than San Antonio on the average. A fairly popular retirement area. bz
