The best town in Michigan - 6/28/2022

I've lived in Michigan most of my life, but traveled extensively throughout the US, so I can compare Marquette to many other cities. I still long to come back no matter where I travel to. The city is quaint and historic, the people are friendly, there is little crime. I live in an outlying community but go to Marquette for shopping and dining. Lake Superior and its beaches are spectacular. There is wonderful fishing, kayaking and sailing. There is little traffic. The water is clean, the air is clean, it is quiet and peaceful. The downside of course is the snow and cold, and the bugs in the summer.

The Best Town In The Upper Peninsula - 7/5/2021

A nice small affordable college town with a fairly accepting, laid back & liberal vibe, and a town with absolutely gorgeous natural surroundings. A town for Americans who love winter, and prefer summers that aren't a miserable 90+ F every day. While the UP has some of the worst poverty in the State of Michigan and a real problem with retaining people, Marquette is a beacon of hope - if real growth is to ever occur in the UP, this is the place where it will happen.

It’s okay - 8/20/2018

I am not a native from here , so I am not biased. If you dream of having a big house for less then 400k this is your place. Very religious not in a bad way , but natives can be passive - aggressive sometimes. Lake effect. 5-6 months of winter and snow. Friendly community but gossips are a real thing and most people still hang out with their high school friends. Beautiful nature . Its great for all kind of outdoorsy stuff . Summers are great . If you love to live in the middle of nowhere this is the place for you. Economy is dying , except if you already have a career then you won’t have problem. You are welcome to survive harsh winters , enjoy some “virgin” nature , raise a family in a safe town and who knows, maybe some friends for life.

Renting - 6/29/2013

If you are looking to purchase a home in Marquette there are a number of options. If you are looking to rent expect to pay. Utility costs are also high. Marquette is a beautiful city to visit but living there and the surronding area leaves much to be desired.

Great City in America - 7/6/2011

THe recreational and events that happen here in the Marquette are so well attended and funded because of the giving population with their time and money. Here, it is small enough that each person makes a big difference and generally most people are so invovled in giving of themselves. We have vast water and land sports with safety of swimming sings that warn of currents that have to be regarded for safe use of the Lakes. Plays, Speakers, Art Displays and sales and Community fund raisers always have large positive feedback. The Mining Journal reports in an extreemly positive and balanced formate. We have seen wonderful shops, events, fairs, parades, guided hikes, nature walks, boating, biking trails, camping and comunity funded music park events. There is always some kind of Sports for all ages at Marquette Mountain Skii trails. This Community is surrounded by quality educated students at NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY,and their activites and interesting events with their College experience. The health system here is excellent and NMU and Marquette General Hospital work together to provide the highest quality of health care. We have retired to here by clear choice and I was raised here until moving to the Military and New Jobs. There is so much positive support and encouraging Churches here also. The weather is kept in balance because of the influence of Lake Superior. We are warmer than places in WI and MN.

Elementary school options - 9/9/2010

I am considering a long move back to MQT, which is near my hometown and where I went to undergrad college (NMU). Can anyone comment on the quality and other aspects of local elemetary schools? I want to live within a mile of downtown and admitedly haven't done my research on all the school options in the city, but would appreciate any input from residents (present of former). Thank you.

where happy hippies go - 7/28/2010

If you don't want to live in a commercial, modern metropolis, if you want to raise kids in a place where they can connect to nature, if you want to connect to nature, if you don't mind serious snow, sun, northern lights, IF you can find a job, this is the place where happy hippies go. If you are happy to be left to your own devices and you don't bore easily and you like friendly neighbors, look no further. And c'mon, L. Superior is your backyard. How cool is that?

Best place on Earth... - 1/27/2009

I have not lived everywhere but, for the many suburbian cities, rural areas, and metro locations I have lived, and visited in the past 20 years I will give my best report to anyone who considers visiting or moving to Marquette, Michigan. This is a wonderful place to live. Marquette and the surrounding communities have a tremendous recreation, cultural, artisitic, and healthy way of life. For quality of life, there is not one human generated area that stands above all others in what the community provides, Marquette Country offers a well-rounded quality of life. There are many different kinds of people for a University community you have diversity but, many European Americans do reside in the area. In spite of this, there is a generous amount of diversity and culture with the NMU there. The beauty of the UP and the area around Marquette is incomparable and unsurpassed. The daily touches with nature and wildlife bring rest, peace and relaxation to any resident who seeks a bond with the outdoors. I encourage anyone who has children to consider living in Marquette. It isn't the easiest place to find work, however. There are challenges for those who do not have full-time careers firmly rooted in the community but, if you are willing to be an independent thinker, hard-worker and don't expect GAP or Macy's to be around the corner, you will never regret living there. Good food, great times, terrific friends and an incredible quality of life.

blizzard in April - 4/5/2007

If you love the snow, this is the place for you. A lot of places in Michigan get freezing rain, but we get little of that. When it snows, it really snows. For example, we just got about 2 feet in less than 48 hours.

$400 rent on a main street? - 4/5/2007

yes, you can get some cheap places to live here. my husband and I live above a deli on one of the main drags and we only pay $400/month. granted our place is pretty much a studio, but we can walk everywhere. cost of living is cheap, but I don't think I would buy a house here. Shopping is limited. We only have Kohl's, Target, JCPenny, Maurices...and that's about it for clothes. There is a Menards, a few bookstores.

there are trade-offs for living here - 4/5/2007

Marquette is a college town, and the majority of the population for most of the year is college students. There are some things to do here, but if you come from a bigger city, Marquette will be a shock. It is a small town, where the mail man says good morning and people you don't know say hi and make eye contact. It's nice. On the other hand, a number of things are very limited. The restaurant options are limited, though for a small town I guess there's a lot. There is music to see if you don't want to see any major bands. the real draw to living here is spending time outdoors. Some of the most beautiful wilderness is here, and the landscape is very different from the rest of Michigan. This area is heavily influenced by old glacial activity and we of course have gorgeous Lake Superior, which is like an ocean when you're standing beside it. Many outdoor activites and you can find a little nightlife. The whole town has recently converted mostly to non-smoking (meaning restaurants), except for a few dive bars and one major bar/restaurant that allows it after 10 pm.
