People here suck but it looks nice - 8/19/2021

I’ve been here a couple months. Everything is beautiful, but the people here are god awful cheap. Don’t know if the people here are all lazy or what, but working here relying on tips makes you want to move away. People here suck but it looks nice

Horrible city - 6/7/2021

I've lived here for 3 years, originally from Port Huron. Moved here because of the beauty, bad idea. The people are snobby and they raise their kids to be as well. I've lived in Morgantown West Virginia so I guess I was spoiled but the beauty in this city isn't worth moving here, the town is ran by Dow and mid Michigan health so everything is under the radar when it comes to criminal offenses.

Many Wonderful Attributes for a city of 40,000 - 7/31/2019

I grew up in Midland and lived there up until I went to college, and now I am back 30 years later. While I agree that if you are looking for a very vibrant place with a lot of entertainment, this city is probably not for you. There is a wonderful library, a Center for the Arts center that has some very talented residents performing (in fact, I could not believe some of them are not professionals). The library is one of the best I have used, and I have lived in many larger cities. There is also a very nice bridge area with a very large dog park and walking trails. What I like best about Midland is that serious crime is pretty much non-existent. There are some thefts and other minor crimes, but serious crimes are pretty much non-existent. The cost of living is definitely the single factor that is motivating me to stay in Midland. Although the majority of the housing stock is dated and many houses require updates, the housing prices are almost half of what I could afford to buy in Madison, WI and Plymouth, MI. The schools are world class which is a huge draw for people with families. The community is very very conservative and die hard Republicans, but to each their own. For the right person it is a good place to live, but I agree that you definitely need to realize the tradeoffs you will be making when deciding where to live.

Soooo boring - 7/24/2019

The most unstimulating place that I've ever lived. I made the mistake of moving here almost 4 years ago and I regret it terribly. The entire city and all surrounding area is literally swampland. Therefore, the natural areas and hiking trails are inaccessible for half the year or more. ALL roads are straight and flat and all stop lights are timed so that you catch every one.

Midland is best place for deadbeat dads. They dont make pay child support although you send them proof of taking trips and going theme parks. They dont care about children. They dont has any christen values. The teachers are adulterated.

Not a fan - 5/25/2017

I was born and raised in Midland and while I'll always have some fond memories of growing up there, those memories will always exist within the agonizing boredom and endless monotony that is Midland. The inertia of the town is unlike anything I've ever seen – there’s no excitement, no innovation, no thinking outside the box – and I feel Midlanders work tirelessly to keep it that way. Midland decided long ago to sacrifice anything that could be remotely associated with “fun” for safety. Any new development is immediately met with skepticism and resistance. When I was 18 I moved to Pittsburgh to attend Art School and never came back – to live anyway. My husband and I visit my family, who still reside in Midland, several times a year. Whenever I visit my hometown I am completely amazed I survived 18 years there. I’m baffled by the people who defend Midland by saying the city is “full of art and culture.” By what standard they’re measuring this against, I’m not sure. As far as I can see Midland is void of art, culture and diversity – not just diversity of people but diversity of thoughts and ideas which make art (and life) so enjoyable. You can’t have a singular “Center for the Arts” and claim to be some sort of mecca for art and expression. People sit around and laugh, “boy, Midland sure is boring but it’s a great place to raise children, am I right??” I know that’s what I would want for my children, to raise them in an uninspired, barren wasteland. Sure, Midland is a safe and quiet town and there’s a great public school system. My husband grew up in the substantially less safe, less quiet Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, attended one of the city’s most urban high schools with a not-so-great public education reputation and he’s just as intelligent, well-adjusted and successful as I am. He even went on to, wait for it, ATTEND COLLEGE! Can you imagine?? Someone from a less than stellar public school actually went to college. I don’t mean to offend, but I’m sure I have. The endless cycle is maddening: growing up in Midland, your life is merely preparation to attend U of M or MSU so you can… get your degree and move back to Midland to work for Dow? It's a real eye opener to live in a city where life doesn't revolve around One Company and getting into one of the Two Colleges.

Central Middle School - 8/10/2012

Central Middle School in Midland was a lot easier to get my son into LD classes than in Washington, Idaho, or Montana.

Moving to Midland Michigan - 1/19/2010

I left Midland Michigan 5 yrs ago for the west coast. After 5 years in northern California I'm moving back to Midland. Midland is a great place to raise a family. I really missed the high quality schools, the parks, the city services, the many churches, the Santa House and much more. Most of all I missed the people; Midland is a town where people stay. Many families here have lived all over the globe as employees of Dow and Dow Corning, yet they love it here. I'm happy to be back in living in Midland Michigan. As an added perk Midland now has a minor league baseball team, new basketball facilities and the Midland Country Club renovation is near completion.

Wonderful place to live! - 6/1/2009

This city offers recreational items, Midland Center for the Arts, the Rail Trail, & Antique festivals. Very family oriented. If you are interested in the "Bar Scene" - head over to Bay City. Bay City and Saginaw are conveniently near by and offer a wide variety of shopping, home improvement and entertainment, while Midland offers that small town feel with access to much more.

Quiet Place to live - 6/19/2008

I moved to Midland for school and thought it was awful. After school I moved to Orlando, FL. After four years in Florida I am really striving to get back to Midland. For raising a family or just enjoying the better side of life(relaxing and peace) I think Midland is a great town. Unlike Orlando Midland has no traffic, decent sized lots, low home prices, nicer people and is overall a great small town.

Great place for a family - 2/22/2008

I grew up in Midland until I moved away for college. It is an incredible place for a family with young children. There are lots of parks and it's a safe, decent town. However, if you are looking for adventure this is not your place. Teenagers usually hate it, but hey, at least they're not getting into tons of trouble! I would give my right arm to move back, and almost everyone I know from Midland says the same thing.

Smash your head in with a rock instead of moving t - 1/27/2008

Trust me if you are not retired or an employee of Dow, then don't move here, there is nothing to do, no night life to speak of, the property is expensive and the land taxes are very high, and the people are very snobby. although there are good sides too, the high taxes afford some nice things, high police presence, excellent schools and public services. If you are under 35 you could definitely move to a more exiting city than midland, but if you are just a really boring person with a bad attitude towards people who are not as well off as you, then Midland is just the place you are looking for.

The little big town - 12/12/2006

We call Midland the little big town. Home to Dow Chemical and Dow Corning companies headquarter with population of just over 40,000, it is a small town with small town virtues. At the same time it offers much of the amenities that larger towns offer, such as art and culture. Other advantages include excellent education, healthcare, sporting facilities, parks and low cost of living and housing. The town is known as the little United Nation with nationalities from around the globe working for a fortune 50 company. You can also say it is a little jewel not discovered by all and enjoyed immensely by the folks who do live here. Midland is only a short distance away from the Detroit, and yet shorter distance away from natural beauties of northern Michigan and Great Lakes.

Midland - 10/31/2006

I grew up in Freeland, not very far from Midland. I agree with previous post that people can be snobby there. We always considered it a more "high-end" town. It is very well kept for the most part with cute neighborhoods. I definately recommend the tridge. It's a nice place to go on a picnic. Also, Dow Gardens is gorgeous and where I got married. They have a nice mall too. If I'm not mistaken you can go fishing and boating in Midland also. In the winter they have all kinds of Christmas decorations that is worth investigating. Overall a very nice town that the residents seem to take pride in.

Bedroom Community - 6/9/2006

This post is an addition to my previous description. About the people - they can be friendly, however, they can be snobby. Mind you, I am not the only person who feels that way. Everyone I know, who moved to the community from a large city can also sense the aloof attitude. Otherwise, I must admit that it is a quiet town with little crime and a very large percentage of residents who have higher education, such as Ph.D.'s. About regional locations for excitement - the "Tridge" and the Midland Center for the Arts (mcfta.com) are the two major highlights in town, in my opinion. Both are really worth a visit! Two more important and interesting places include The Mackinaw Center and Northwood Institute, both downtown, near Main Street and come highly recommended.
