I love Milwaukee, and you might too - 6/7/2023

I have lived in Milwaukee for about 5 years. I really like the area, but I also plan on moving away soon. It is a unique city that has its charm though. Here is my personal list of pros and cons I have about it. --Pros-- -Generally a very affordable place to live: Living in Milwaukee has been really nice on my wallet. I never really feel like I'm gonna be destitute at the end of the month, even if I decide to splurge on extra things during the month. -Laid back: So this may be a con for someone looking for a big, bustling city, but for me, it feels like Milwaukee has the amenities of a huge city but at the pace of a smaller town. Sure, there are plenty of areas in the city that are still surrounded by a lot of loud noise, but I never really had any issues finding a quieter part of town to live. -Food and drink: If you like beer and cheese, Milwaukee is the place to be. Some of my favorite beers have been from local breweries. Plus, Wisconsin cheese is some of the best cheese in the country. It's never a problem to find a place with both beer and curds if you're into that. Aside from those, Milwaukee also has a really diverse food scene. Plenty of global cuisine can be found in Milwaukee, and it's usually very good. Maybe not the easiest on the wallet, but still a nice treat. -Friendly people: Growing up in California, I definitely was not used to strangers on the street being nice. Living in Milwaukee, even though I tend to keep to myself most of the time, when I go out, I find that the local people are very friendly. I've had really pleasant chats with a random stranger a number of times, which is refreshing. -Interesting and various local events: It seems like there is always something happening in the city, whether that be a festival of some sort, a concert, or a live show. Milwaukee has a ton of annual events, and they're all pretty interesting. -The airport: The Milwaukee airport is great! It's not confusing to navigate, and I haven't had issues with getting where I need to go. It may just be my experience, but I really enjoy the airport out here. -Neighborhoods are charming: The different neighborhoods in the city are charming. Personally, I am a fan of Riverwest. It's a cute neighborhood, and has plenty of nice little bars and cafes. Downtown tends to be clean and bustling. The Historic Third Ward is also a beautiful part of town. -4 Seasons: If you like seeing the seasons change, you'll definitely be able to see it in Milwaukee. It's got 4 distinct seasons. --Cons-- -Segregation: So, the city is badly segregated and hasn't changed. A lot of the areas that were redlined are not well maintained and seem to still be ignored by a lot of city projects and road work. -Crime: Crime can get pretty bad here, but it seems to be mainly contained to the segregated, lower-income areas. Honestly, though, outside of those areas, I feel safe to walk around during the day alone, and at night with a couple friends. Just be aware of your surroundings and use your street smarts and you'll be fine. -Mediocre public transit: There are buses around the city, and a tram that can take you to the casino from the train station. You will definitely need a car to get around the city unless you plan on only going to a few specific areas. -The weather: So, while you may see 4 distinct seasons, each season doesn't get the same amount of time. Winters are definitely cold and snowy, and can last from early October until mid April. Summers are hot and humid, which can feel pretty smothering and unpleasant. Usually the summer weather lasts from mid June until the end of September. But the 5-ish weeks of spring and 6-ish weeks of fall are great! -Poor job market: Milwaukee's job market may be trending upwards, but it feels like it's just a sort of stagnant mess. I hope this upward trend continues and more job opportunities become available, but at least in my experience, it's a difficult market to get into. -Air quality: The city's air quality is definitely not great. Luckily, I don't have too many allergies, so I'm not constantly feeling crappy, but a few of my friends have bad allergies and the air quality is brutal for them. --Middle Ground-- -It takes 20 minutes to get anywhere: I don't know how this works, but it just seems to work that way. It seems like no matter where you want to go in the city, it takes 20 minutes to get there. Well, of course not in deep traffic, but in regular traffic, you can expect your travel time to be about 20 minutes. -The lake: The lake is gorgeous and the beaches are lovely. The biggest issue I have with the lake is the lake effect in winter. It makes it feel so much colder in winter. The wind bites hard, and it's awful to be outside for more than a minute or two. However, in summer, being by the lake is great because the winds coming off of it are cooler, so you get a nice breeze. Overall, I really love the city and what it has to offer. It could really be a great place for a lot of people, but it's definitely not for everyone. But I hope that my personal list of pros and cons can help you out if you want to move here. Even though I'm moving away, I do plan on coming back to the city to visit often.

The Cream City Greats! - 4/14/2022

I've gone to Milwaukee many times for vacation, and it is a beautiful city with great lakeside views and beaches, stunning river walks, and of course the delicous cheese curds. It is one of the greatest cities I have ever been to, especially with its varied culture, Oktoberfest, contagious spirit, and more! I hope you can enjoy the expierence to!

Pretty decent city with some things to offer although crime is on the rise and segregation is out of control by race and income levels.

Could be bad, could be good. It depends - 8/4/2021

I've lived in this city for ~16 years (my whole life) and it's ok, but your experience of the city in entirely based on where you live/visit in the city. Unfortunately, the city's past was full of segregational housing practices that largely shaped the city, for better and for worse. Neighborhoods with higher populations of minorities like latinos and black people were given much fewer opportunities to grow financially, while neighborhoods with higher white populations were given more. This practice, known as redlining, lead to extreme poverty and where there's poverty, there's often violence. However, some of the neighborhoods have seen growth. For example, the area i'm from once had a relatively large hispanic/latino population and was at one point very poor, it has since the early 2000s become a decent place to live. For me, I have had a relatively positive experience growing up in the city, but I understand not everone here has. Still though, Milwaukee can be a great place to live and if the issues of poverty and violence can be solved, it could become a really great place to live.

DO NOT MOVE HERE - 6/26/2021

I lived here For over 40 years. Let me tell you This Milwaukee became a sh*t hole . I give it a -0 It’s ghetto. WAY TOO much crime. I mean you got a watch out for flying bullets onthe north and east side, And they’re moving to the southside. People do not know how to drive too many accidents. This is also including the east side of Milwaukee too. On The north side and the southside mostly you got a watch out for people taking kids for prostituting . West Allis area is still nice but it’s getting junky. South-Milwaukee and Cudahay is Racist. And there is nothing to do there. There’s also Brookfield it’s not worth living in either They have high taxes and pricey mortgage or rent The schools on the northside and the southside are ghetto. Way too many drop outs. Their score rating is between zero and five. And West Allis is also ratings 0-5 . The weather sucks. Way too much snow longer winters. The housing market is ridiculous and So are the taxes. You can move to a cheaper state with a nicer house In a better neighborhood With good weather and a better decent school. So the bad things are Longer winters starting in the middle of October all the way through May. You get freezing temperatures below negative Way too much crime Too many young girls with multiple baby daddies And that goes for the guys to many baby mamas So what I’m trying to say is there’s too many hoes You have to watch out for diseases. There’s too much of that The area is ghetto everywhere This includes some of the out skirt of Milwaukee too It is NOT safe Definitely not safe for children Stores are trash Most of all the stores on the northside are closed Because of people on the northside do not know how to behave , There’s too many thieves and they vandalize their own community. Most but not all of them. People that live in Milwaukee should take care of their community and property instead of wrecking it. They have Festival ground towards the lakefront, which it’s OK but it’s crazy just like state fair. Speaking of state fair places in a ridiculous place in the middle of all the traffic . YOU can’t get through for two weeks when it goes on and there’s no parking. It is a very big mess when that is going on. They should’ve bought land away from houses . It is an extreme poor location. specially for residence and workers have to deal with that mess. The only thing that is good is I do have some good food of all kinds The summers are nice about three months they get So my suggestion is you NOT TO MOVE here . And if you are still living in Milwaukee or around that area make your life better get out while you can. Especially if you have children. I got myself out four years ago. LET me tell you it was the best thing I did. I have a better school rating it is a seven for my kids.I don’t have to deal with foot / feet of snow and the freezing cold weather. Come on now there is more than Wisconsin State to choose to live in.

Milwaukee, Home Of Strong Ethics and Honesty - 7/23/2020

I have lived in New York City, Washington, D.C., Ft. Lauderdale, Milwaukee, Louisville, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, and Seattle. Of all these cities, I would choose Milwaukee to live over all of them. The only negative is winter. Housing costs, food costs, entertainment costs are all very low. Property taxes are astronomical, but that is balanced by the low cost. The people of Milwaukee are kind, giving, accepting and know how to have a good time. You will make friends. The airport is a joy, and the infrastructure is excellent. Medical care is some of the best in the world, and if you pick the right suburb, your kids will be educated so well, college will be easy for them Professional sports, great festivals, innovative dining, and a cool music scene are available and most importantly, accessible. You don’t have to be a billionaire to enjoy Milwaukee’s best happenings. Yet, what truly makes the city stand out are the ethics and honesty of its citizens. When you consider the aloofness of most New Yorkers, the transience of DC, the banality of Ft. Lauderdale, the provincialism of Louisville, the extreme conservatism of Cincinnati, the theocracy of Salt Lake, and the self centered attitude of dot com Seattle, Milwaukee wins hands down. The people who live in Milwaukee, love it. The rest are just jealous.

Milwaukee and Chicago are completely different. - 5/25/2020

I've read all the posts written on Chicago and Milwaukee. I can agree and disagree on many comments but most were superficial. There is no comparison when comparing Chicago and Milwaukee. First, I agree how Chicago has downgraded and that began with the launch of Obama, backed by the big 'O' , and neither are part of Chicago now. Chicago is the 'Windy City' because of politicians; good, bad, wrong or right, it's the pulse of everything. Obama and Oprah both got to where they are because of Chicago politics, so as corrupt as Chicago is, it's far more progressive, open and advanced than any city in this nation. Furthermore, Chicago has always been a first rate city, and from the beginning, segregated. But it is a city filled and fueled by hard work, passion, history, culture, diversity, ethnicity, education, technology, the arts, love, hate, greed and generosity. It was and is all the best and worst things of any first rate city. Milwaukee doesn't even qualify and never will. All the great things that people love about Milwaukee, Chicago has 100 times over. Milwaukee thrives on anything 'drinking' related. It is the pulse and mentality that permeates the lives and minds of those who hold the power. It is a problem everywhere but it is not so overwhelmingly obvious as it is in Milwaukee/Wisconsin. Chicago has a fierceness, a spirit, drive and deep roots that Milwaukee can never compete with. Only 75 miles apart but an entire world of differences. Chicago is alive, there is a vibe and an edge. Whether you are a Jew, Wasp, Immigrant, Catholic, Black, White, Asian, LGBT, educated or not, there is a place for you and an opportunity if you can make happen. If you can't make it in Chicago, you will not make it anywhere. The myth in Wisconsin, is life-longers believe they have a better life than the rest, it's because they have never acclimated to any other, outside of their comfort zone. People are never content in Chicago. You feel it, you smell it and if you don't become a part of it, you don't understand who Chicago really is. Yes, the public educational system is very bad, but the alternatives that have been made possible are far superior to the very best that Milwaukee/Wisconsin could offer. I laugh when Wisconsin wants everyone to believe that UW-Madison is the same school as UW-Milwaukee. Please! It's that foolish mentality that has so many people seduced into 'not getting it' or understanding how the world really works. Madison is a great school, but Chicago has Northwestern, University of Chicago, DePaul, and Loyola just to name the big ones. Sure, there are notorious health facilities in Chicago, but the top rate medical facilities along with the best Doctors of any given field, from around the world, live and work throughout Chicago. The very best Doctors and hospitals and healthcare in general of Milwaukee doesn't come close to Chicago. The 'mentality' of professionals is entirely different. Amazing Dr.'s are available and approachable in Chicago, there is such an overwhelming pool of highly educated and talented Dr.'s, and it's that competition that drives them to be the best. Across the board, even without insurance, you will find someone to help you. Chicagoans aren't afraid of risk taking to make a difference; its a thread that connects the highest to the lowest. Some of the wealthiest people live in Chicago, and as corrupt as it has been, I've never seen more generous people any where throughout the world. A nanny, immigrant construction worker, and non-English speaking person can make a great living in Chicago and be given opportunities they would never have a chance at in Milwaukee, California or any other state. Overall, a Milwaukee mentality is stingy and miserly. They haven't learned from being in a progressive society that if you reward from the bottom, the top becomes more successful. The best lawyers come out of Chicago too. Wisconsin right now is the easiest state to become a lawyer in, and Marquette Law doesn't hold a candle to Northwestern. I believe Wisconsin has a very difficult time drawing in great talent and from what I've witnessed firsthand in what their health profession has to offer; I advise anyone considering a move there, to deeply consider your healthcare options. Healthcare now should be a priority. Geographically, Chicago doesn't offer what other states can in terms of beauty and weather. But you will never find the abundance of parks, forest preserves, and extensive bike and running trails that Chicago had the foresight to build well before their time. It's true Chicagoans can be abrupt, pushy, brash, and demanding. Life is stressful there. You are on and multitasking most of the time, you have to adjust constantly to change in weather, culture, and environments. You have to be industrious, astute and shrewd to get things done right and timely. You have to learn offensive/defensive driving skills, become strategic when planning driving routes, and when you do, traffic is very manageable, and you will be able to drive with ease from NYC to Nairobi because of your experience. A final mention is the police force. Chicago police have been given a bad rap for too long. Unfortunately, the tensions from segregation and brought to a boiling point by the Obama Administration have everything to do with that. And that tension exists every where. I can only speak of what I know firsthand as a Chicago resident of nearly 40 years. The Chicago police are the best, most professional, fair and down to earth I've ever seen. Many come from generations of Italian and Irish police and firemen. They are brave because Chicago has always been a dangerous city and full of crime. As long as you are meek, respectful and compliant you will be treated fairly, and in fact, you will be let go for minor traffic offenses. I've never seen any different, and I've seen the very worst of what Chicago has to offer. In comparison, the Milwaukee police are the most corrupt, disgusting, and arrogant I've had to deal with. They are the stereotypical weakling with a big badge and when they have a chance to use it, it doesn't matter who you are. I believe 100% everything that happened to Bambi Bombenik in the Milwaukee Police Dept. I don't think these guys are just against women, I think they have an inferiority complex against anyone they may feel small against. That 'complex' is a part of the city as a whole. It's the mentality I mentioned earlier that people have throughout Milwaukee and the state. I've seen the worst of Chicago, but I've learned everything by living there. I can travel anywhere in the world from having lived there, worked there and being educated there. I am able to converse with and understand different races, cultures and religions. I am not presumptuous upon meeting people from different backgrounds, I am open to them and ready to learn what makes them unique. I embrace new and better ideas wherever I go. In contrast, I've learned that Milwaukee has nothing to offer. It's a small minded place where people 'believe' and 'behave' that they know everything. They are opposed to change and resent it. You can party in any city that exists, but not every city promotes ideas, change, advancement and opportunity. Chicago has it all and what it doesn't have it will broaden your mind enough to visit other interesting places. Milwaukee is stale, stolid and predictable. If Chicago doesn't rise from the darkness of where it is now, then every great city is without hope. Chicago has always been the very best of all the great cities that have existed. It's people have come from all parts of the world to build her and that is what makes her strong. She has endured many things and continues to get up. Always, it's the worst of times that make us stronger. The people of Chicago are very similar to New Yorkers, and so is the life style. But Chicago is much more livable if you dream of the so-called, 'real life'. If you live in Chicago and need a change, look into another state for options. But I highly advise against Milwaukee and Wisconsin in general.

Best Review Ever Written. - 1/18/2020

Like many waterfront cities (like Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, St Louis, New Orleans, Memphis, etc, etc, etc), Milwaukee does have its violent side. This penchant for settling scores is overwhelmingly shaped by geography and demographics. My advice to anyone considering living in Milwaukee has always been "Always pay your dope dealer.", not surprising advice given Milwaukee citizens' legendary thrift habits. Also, the "dangerous" areas are WAY overrated (local TV news is notoriously bloodthirsty) and there is no place in town that I won't go to, day or night, if the need/desire arises. As in most places, a civil tongue and good manners will always succeed. Milwaukee has quite a few wildly resurgent and redeveloping areas: the Third Ward, the Lower Eastside, Brewer's Hill, Hadley Hill, Downtown, Bay View, Walker's Point, Pabst City, the Deer District, N. 3rd Street, RiverWest, among others. East Mitchell Street and Avenues West are starting to stir. Having hit a critical mass, Milwaukee's redevelopment is self-sustaining, private investors are creating their own energy, and continued vibrant regrowth is not dependent on government "funny money". And finally as if that is not enough, the Brewer's made the playoffs, the Packers were 13-3, the Bucks are 37-7, the Wisconsin Badgers went to the Rose Bowl, and Badger and Golden Warrior basketball teams are wildly dangerous for opponents this year. and the beat goes on

Lakes and Festivals abound - 12/27/2019

I have lived in many cities across the country. Milwaukee by far has the best of all worlds. It's hip, relatively affordable, decent job market, and it's the city of summer festivals. The traffic can get hectic during rush hour, but no where near to the extreme of other large cities. It has its fair share of crime, but only in pockets. I love being by one of the largest and most gorgeous natural lakes in the US. The change of each season brings me joy. I could never envision myself living anywhere else.

Top 5 worst cities - 5/16/2019

First of all i have lived here for 45 years. It was really good until the last 15 years. We have 6 months of winter now, no spring and when Summer comes around it's sticky and hot. The crime rate has tripled and has the most dangerous zip code in America 53206. They made a movie about this. If you like cold weather, bars, and bowling your ok here. The economy has stalled in last 15 years and Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha has suffered from low wages and crime because of it. Milwaukee is also very segregated where the black and hispanic outnumber the whites. Don't believe me check the 2019 stats. The pros are none

Tons to do in this mid size city! - 7/29/2018

Milwaukee, an underrated but consistently pleasantly surprising place to visitors is experience a renaissance like never before. The amount of new projects and developments is exploding. The city is mid size but has the amenities and features of a city double its size, from the thriving theatre and arts scene, to live music venues and events, a booming and emerging restaurant scene, shopping, affordable housing, and an easily accessible sprawling lakefront with an unexpected beach painted with tiki huts and volleyball nets, this city has something for everyone.

Not a bad Medium Size City - 4/16/2018

I lived here for 22 years, and have a love and dislike of the place at the same time. In the like category are the city size as it has most of what you want from a city, folks are proud and friendly in their somewhat defensive way, there is the uniqueness of the city dialect, nice museums, good suburbs, a pace of life that is not too fast and not too slow. It's Teutonic history means it has great outdoors events with music like Summerfest, and yes given the German heritage, drinking beer goes without saying. It has 2 professional sports teams which is rare for a city metro area of only 1.5 million. The local colleges are good, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee is a gem too for getting a college degree either as a full time or part time working student, and the vocational tech college MATC is top knotch. Work ethic and accountability are strong here. Being on Lake Michigan is a god send for this city. Views looking over the lake remind you that you may be at the ocean on a summer day. Milwaukee represents in many ways the American Spirit of getting it done and made with pride. Areas on the city's east side are really nice. In the dislike category is you are no longer sure just what the City stands for. Made in Milwaukee used to mean just about everything manufacturing built extremely well and at good solid wages, but that base has gone downhill big time hurting blue collar high school folks the most, probably due to the big free trade agreements. In its place is a mixed economy with nothing that really stands out. It is just a city that keeps going like the energizer bunny but what is at its core, you just do not know. The city dynamic seems in a stasis, neither getting bigger nor declining completely, just hanging in there is the sense, and you want more than that from a city. The City schools, high property and income taxes, and the god awful everlasting winter weather are the major deterrents to wanting to move here. Why they put the baseball stadium in the middle of a freeway hell and not downtown like St. Louis did is a mistake of Epic proportions, although Miller Park with its enclosed top does allow you to see professional baseball in any kind of weather which does show up in Milwaukee. The suburbs are just like suburbs everywhere, and unfortunately the inner city has really declined sadly. It is too bad they did not site the new Chinese FoxConn high tech company in the middle of Milwaukee as that would have brought many needed jobs to those in the city that need them, and added a real ZAP putting Milwaukee on the map nationwide as on the cutting edge and in a trans formative positive way, instead of having to rely on its historic past of Harleys, brats, beer, metal bending, and car parts, and now a mottled mixed economy. Standard of living is average here. I am glad I grew up there in its heyday, but today am averse to moving back there.

Most Violent City in America - 7/23/2015

Milwaukee is one of the most violent cities in America. I should know, I have lived here for over 50 years. Everyday the news is filled with the violence that takes place in this crime infested city. Little kids get shot and killed on a daily basis. Car jackings and accidents from car jackers occurs everyday. My neighbor was shot and killed by four "house jackers". If you report anything, your house will get burned to the ground. It happens everyday. I pray to god everyday that I will have the power to leave this miserable excuse of a city. Living in Milwaukee is pure hell, and that is the best I can say about this place.

It's actually pretty decent - 3/5/2015

I've lived here my whole life, that's 23 years of Milwaukee experience and let me just say...it's changed. But that's what's great about living here, you are constantly having to adapt to different living conditions. So let me break down our areas. You've got the north side, not as racially diverse, a majority of African American and Caucasian population. The only jobs you'll find up there are scattered fast food chains and factory buildings. People are generally friendly, some areas are shady but if you stay on the main streets you'll be fine. Then you've got downtown/upper-lower eastside/lakeside. It's hippie nation in that area. Great food, diversity, depending on what you're looking for reasonably priced for the view and easy access to public transportation, Water Street (google it), business and college oriented, museums, during the summer the lakeside has plenty of outdoor activities. I'd say one thing that you've got to have is a hefty wallet for anything besides a pizza and Netflix but always be aware of the awesome deals the attractions have like free days or discount admissions and eats. And you have the south/west/east side. You've got west allis which is a bit more suburbian, family oriented, not a lot of diversity going on there, location for our state fair grounds. General south side which hosts a large Hispanic/latino population which you'll find more of the office or small business jobs. Check out 27th street, it's just one long road that connects all of the areas and has a ton of businesses to explore. Then the lower east side, that's a artsy side of town, pretty dull. Very health oriented, you've got the Alchemist theatre, nice people very family oriented as well. Good schools (not great you've got to do some research), great food, transportation not bad, historical sites, invested in sports (mainly football [green bay packers], baseball[brewers], and basketball[bucks]),SUMMERFEST!!! Largest music festival in the country, music booze, funny people, overall good time that is the place. Hope you like my review and i'll answer any questions.

Response to the 2010 "Don't even think about it" p - 1/26/2014

I love these responses! Wish I had been aware of this sight when she was posting. I think the $10.50 an hour job with a college degree might have something to do with a lack of spellchecking? (she used nickle and becuase several times) I've lived in Detroit, Chicago and now Milwaukee suburbs. We travel to the city often and maintain a residence there as well. I think the taxes could use some help and unless you live in “White folks Bay” or Shorewood, I would recommend private schools, but this isn't isolated to Milwaukee. Larger cities are all suffering from a school and services perspective right now. The bigotry piece isn’t unique to Milwaukee and its far worse in Chicago. I do find it funny that she’s now in Texas and calling Milwaukee and suburbs bigoted with bad government.(unless she's living in Ausitn) Milwaukee is no worse than most from an education\taxes standpoint and the parking rant, that’s big cities again, no difference. It's better in some ways and no worse than most major cities today. Art's entertainment and restaurants are wonderful here, and Summerfest is without question, one of the best of its kind in the country! People are relatively friendly and I've not been uncomfortable in any circumstances I've encountered in my 20+ years. It's big enough, but still maintains a smallish vibe.
