The School's are horrible. - 11/15/2010

The new high school addition looks great, but the quality of the education is lacking. The worst I would have to say, is the English dept. All of the senior parents were told that we would have to help our students write their college application letters, because they didnt know how to write a paper correctly. I have seen students (not just my own) turn in a paper that has grammar, puncutation, and spelling mistakes come home with an A. There is no accountability. It is just passing the student to the next class so that the graduation rates are higher. I have started to homeschool some, and parents who can afford it, move their students to private school. Except for that and the dreary rain, Oak Harbor is an awesome community.

Interesting place - 11/14/2008

I have found Oak Harbor to be a nice place to live in general, but still feel it is too secluded for me personally. There is not a lot to do as far as night life or shopping, but there are a lot of outdoor activities that you can partake in. The mountains are just amazing. The beaches here are beautiful when it is a sunny day out. You can sometimes sea the sea-life on the beaches such as sea lions and whales. If you want to live here you must like the rain. There are a lot of military people there. If you are a person in the military PCSing to Whidbey and do not like living in military towns, try Anacortes, WA. It is also beautiful there, and only about a 30 min drive or less to work. Housing is expensive, it usually costs more than what you get in BAH (military housing allowance). The people are very friendly and it is only a short ferry ride to Seattle.

Windy, dreary, wet and noisy. A great place if you're a slug or snail.

Crime Free - 4/24/2008

I have lived all over the United States and Oak Harbor is a great place to raise a family. Crime is almost non-existant. You can walk the streets at night without worrying about being mugged. You can even leave your door unlocked and nothing will be bothered.

Small town crime - 10/6/2007

We came to Oak Harbor about 24 years ago and the type of crimes around our city are petty for the most part. One should never leave the home or car unlocked but you could. Crime at the schools has a low percentage.

Oak Harbor, Washington - 7/2/2005

I have lived in a lot of states. Oak Harbor is wonderful. It is a small town yet their is a lot to do. Your close to seattle. About a 2 hour drive. No matter where you live you are close to the ocean. Their are a lot of little towns and Islands. The people are so nice. The homes are beautiful. A lot of people think that it rains a lot. It does in Seattle but not on Whidbey Island (where oak harbor is located) It doesn't rain any more than any other place. In the winter instead of snow you will get a lot of rain. You might get snow for 2 days out of the whole winter. I will take rain over snow any day. The climate is very comfortable. You can go all winter without a coat and be comfortable. THe summers are nice because it doesn't get humid. Oak harbor has a navy base. Most of the people in the town are their for that reason. The base is probably one of the smallest. It is a laid back base. I would highly recommend the town and the base to anyone.
