Pros and cons - 5/23/2010

Just like most places, Parkersburg definitely has it's pros and cons. The pros: pretty low crime rate (although it's growing more and more every year), typically no extreme weather and it really is a pretty place. Now the cons which are much more extreme: all the chemical plants have created a hazardous and toxic environment, (Marietta, OH has one of the highest cancer rates in the country and auto-immune disease rates are very high also), very few good-paying jobs unless you are in the healthcare field or work for the government, NOTHING to do and the teens get bored really easily and that never leads to anything good, the hospitals and health care in this area suck, the list could go on and on and on... I have lived here my entire life and am hoping to leave in the next few years. There really is nothing good or positive about staying here... If you are considering a move to this area...one word...DON'T!!! You will be sick year round and definitely bored out of your skull. Don't say you haven't been warned...and don't let anybody else tell you it's a good place to live...because it's NOT!

St Josephs Medical Center - 11/11/2008

Have worked at St Josephs for the past 11 weeks as a travel RN in the CVICU. A very friendly hospital, great hospitalist and physician availability with CV surgeons of high caliber. Moving on shortly. Travel ICU nursing is a great opportunity to see and experience new areas for more than vacations.

Air Quality is closer to 18, not 49 - 9/21/2008

The neighboring towns of Belpre & Marietta, Ohio, both have air quality figures of 18. The data here shows 49 for Parkersburg. I believe that 18 is closer to the truth because the valley that contains these 3 towns also contains SEVERAL PLASTICS and CHEMICAL FACTORIES. This area, the Mid-Ohio Valley, frequently suffers thermal inversions, in which the polluted air is trapped close to the ground. Some of the public water systems and private wells, also, are polluted with chemicals that have been proven to cause cancer. For example, a large DuPont Teflon facility, near Parkersburg, is in the middle of a class action lawsuit for dispersing C-8, a known carcinogen, into the air and water -- for several decades. Sorry, but this is not my personal opinion. It's based on scientific facts that I have found through many years of research. Lots of people in the region don't like to admit the truth about the pollution, because the economy of the area depends on chemical and plastics production.

Crime - 7/10/2008

Crime in Parkersburg is very low compared to the national average. Pleasant place to raise children currently. As the area starts a build up of new business, there will probably be more crime because of what eventually migrates here.

The air quality data shown here appears to be quit - 7/1/2008

Please be very careful to check other sources for air quality in Parkersburg. The data here shows 49, yet for Belpre & Marietta (Ohio) which are adjacent to Parkersburg, it shows 18. Several types of plastics are manufactured within the bounds of Parkersburg, Belpre & Marietta (OH). The area, known as the Mid-Ohio Valley, frequently suffers thermal inversions, in which the polluted air is trapped close to the ground. The economy in Parkersburg depends heavily on various plastics and chemical plants, including a large DuPont Teflon facility, which is in the middle of a class action lawsuit for dispersing C-8, a known carcinogen, into the air and water -- for several decades.

Want out!!! - 11/26/2006

Parkersburg is dying. There are very, very few good jobs to be found here. The population is decreasing more and more every year as people are wising up and getting out while they still can. Also, this isn't called chemical valley for nothing. The only thing Parkersburg has going for it is a low crime rate and as far as that goes is a decent place to raise children. As long as you don't mind not having anything and scraping by paycheck to paycheck. I was born and raised here and cannot wait to get out!!!

Friendly and Inexpensive - 10/31/2006

Parkersburg, West Virginia is a small city of about 30,000-plus people situated on the Ohio River. Most of the people live in neighboring Vienna or in the surrounding suburban areas. Parkersburg has a nice main library, a used bookstore in the old Carnegie Library, good schools, and two good local hospitals. Traffic can be a pain especially along Grand Avenue, but there are plenty of places to eat along the way. Most neighborhoods are nice although there are some trashy spots closer to downtown. There are also many older Victorian homes. Violent crime is low here. Weather is mild temperature-wise in the fall and winter although January and February can be very cold. Heavy snowfall is rare and doesn't usually happen until December at the earliest. Strong but brief thunderstorms are common in the summer, which is hot and humid. Downtown has a few bars, a community theater, and the oil & gas museum. During the fall you can go to the Volcano Days festival or tour Blennerhasset Island, where you can see the mansion, which was rebuilt in the 1980's. If you want inexpensive living and a friendly area, Parkersburg is a good place to be.

An inexpensive place to live - 8/1/2006

I am in the process of retiring early due to back problems. I have been wanting to move to the Southeast (Tucson specifically) to escape the cold and snow here. After checking on home prices throughout Arizona, I have finally come to believe the reports that the Parkersburg, WV. area is the 2nd least expensive place in the United States to buy a home. Unless I hit the lottery, I think that I'll stay here.
