This is where you go to unwind! Beaches, golf, etc - 6/30/2023

Been here since 2017 and have enjoyed it very much. This is not a 'Big City', so if you're looking for all the big city trappings move on. It's quiet. I have wonderful neighbors and we look after each other and our properties, but crime is low so I don't expect anything will ever happen near me. Don't sit in your house and expect the world to come to you. Make an effort. PSL has a beautiful botanical garden. Fantastic if you like photography like me. A very nice public golf course, a staple for Florida living, and there's even a nice little Oak Hammock park. Great fishing. The inlet is nearby. You're on the Atlantic coast so the ocean is RIGHT HERE! 21 miles of it! Free parking except in the State Parks beaches. Plenty of clubs to join, Legion, Elks, Moose, etc. If you miss the bustling rush of city life, go back. This is where you come to unwind, relax, and take up a hobby. I do photography, car tinkering (just got back from Hot Rod Power Tour 2023), I've set my house up for voice control so my blind wife has a rather easier time with things. It's GREAT !!

Love Port St. Lucie - 1/3/2020

We have visited four times and love it so much that we purchased a home here, and move in two weeks! Lets see first the good things. Beautiful weather year around. Economy is growing and wages are on the rise. House prices are still on the reasonable side compared to other places in Florida. It is very diverse, and a great mix of cultures. The people are nice, and everyone is helpful. Palm trees in the front yard in stead of toothless hillbillies sitting around a bonfire in the front yard drinking Mountain Dew and watching their teeth fall out! Crime is very low, city is really clean, people drive crazy just the way I like it. Great food and shopping. Now the bad! No bums on every street corner for me to tell to get a job like in Knoxville, Tn. We will not have 5 months of cold dreary rainy gray days to cause seasonal depression. I will miss that!

Money pit - 9/8/2019

Where do I begin. Been here for a few years now and just waiting to retire so I can concentrate on other places. Didn't take more than a year to figure this place out though. The city is $$$ hungry. Coming from a northern state I'm used to maintaining my home by learning to be my own handyman. After buying a typical neglected Florida home here (mistake) I attempted to do some repairs/replacements around the place. Spoke to a neighbor who was kind enough to help me with his pickup and he said "don't let the code enforcement catch you doing anything, they'll get right on you". I really didn't understand what he meant until I was going to buy a window for replacement from a contractor's leftovers. He said "don't let code enforcement see you, they're Vicious!". I've owned my homes ever since my mid 20's in the north and have never dealt with town storm troopers like this. Why even allow a Home Depot or Lowes in town if a homeowner can't even change his own hose faucet or toilet? Oh, it must be the taxes these businesses pay. It's all about the money. And don't think that Florida and PSL property taxes are low like some say. Try $30 per thousand assessed value.

Run - 8/22/2018

There is no quality of life in Port St. Lucie. It is so overcrowded in this town it is busting at the seams. The traffic is horrendous and it takes forever to get anywhere. It is so stressful driving anywhere in this town because there are way too many cars filling up the roads and not enough room. I know every city has auto accidents and reckless driver but this town has a MAJOR issue with speeders and reckless drivers. Too many people have been killed in this town in auto accidents as a result of drivers who think they're driving down the Autobahn. People LOVE to drive highway speeds not only around town but also down residential streets, so watch out for that and don't expect to see a lot of police activity. Who knows what they do all day because I rarely see anyone pulled over. This town is not meant for the massive influx of people and that is why there are so many accidents on the roadways. Or maybe it's all of the shrubbery and palm trees obstructing proper vision at various intersections around town. They keep trying to expand and build new roadways but it really doesn't do much good. All this town consists of are restaurants, banks, grocery stores, gas stations, and houses. Because of this, most jobs in this town are low paying and most people need to travel down south to go to work. There is no scenery here anymore because they are tearing down every piece of land and squeezing in houses and buildings everywhere. The cost of housing is incredibly expensive for what this town actually is. There is no way to afford living here anymore unless you earn a high income or have a high combined income. If you have a family with children and you want at least a three bedroom house and a decent backyard, expect to pay almost $2,000 a month in just rent. The cost of housing is so overpriced here but if you like having a food restaurant, gas station on every corner and plenty of retail stores to shop in, then it's money well spent. There is just no reason for housing to be as expensive as it is in this town. Like I've said, all this town has to offer is food and retail. If you like city living, there are true cities out there that do have a lot to offer and are worth the money spent in housing, but Port St. Lucie is not one of them, in my opinion. I have been here for many years and I am stunned at what time town has become. As far as crime goes, Port St. Lucie has its fair share. It seems that almost everyday I turn on the news there's another robbery or invasion. We DO NOT need anymore fast food restaurants, banks, gas stations, or grocery stores. We have ENOUGH. There is everything you need on every corner. Just when you think there's no way they can build yet another food store, gas station or bank, they find another lot to squeeze one in, surprising everyone. They are trying to make this town something that it is not by taking what once was a nice, affordable place to live and turning into an upscale, high cost town. It's so easy for people to just say "if you don't like it here, why not move?" Well, most people can't afford to just pick up and leave especially with children. Out of all the places to live in Florida, I really cannot understand why so many people are moving here. What is it about this town that people desire? There are not many opportunities here for young families to grow. The school system is not great here. Maybe if you're looking to retire this is a nice place for you. Or, if you just have so much money that you don't know or care what to do with it and you have all day to leisure around and don't need to work, and it seems that most people in this town do not, then by all means enjoy Port St. Lucie.

Port st Lucie sucks!!! - 5/2/2018

Port st Lucie sucks! There is literally nothing to do here. The only main attraction this place has is the boring PGA golf course and the stupid Mets stadium. Port st lucie seems like it was designed for old people 50 and above. There is absolutely NOTHING here to stimulate the mind and nothing to look at. If you want to go out for a walk and enjoy the "Scenery" good luck because there is no scenery, just houses. Nobody is ever outside, so if you like to be social, forget about it because there are no social gatherings and if there is, then its for old people and I don't want to hang around old people. (I'm only 30 yrs old) This "city" is so depressing its ridiculous. Port st Lucie is so pathetic that it doesn't even have a downtown lol I absolutely regret moving here and for anyone thats gonna comment the usual "Then pack up and leave" don't worry I will leave. There is not a single thing good I can say about PSL not even 1 good thing. If anyone is looking to move to Florida and you want some kind of brain function left after a few years. Move to Orlando or something. PSL has driven me into depression and I think I've gone fully retarded. I will be moving in the next 2 months.

Over Priced and over taxed - 9/17/2017

Lived here for 2 years and I have to say that the area is nice, however, taxes are the highest I have ever seen. Home sales are advertised as very good but I have seen very little in the way of traffic to our home. The only thing you get from your taxes is trash service.

Very nice town and very safe - 6/8/2017

Port St Lucie is the safest city in FL based on size. Very low crime. It's also very well kept especially St Lucie West. There are many recreation areas like parks for people to enjoy.. its extremely people friendly in that regard. and of course its only minutes away from beautiful Hutchinson Island beaches... if you live closer to the coast line.. Lots of nature to enjoy. In the Indian River Lagoon you'll see Dolphins swimming and fish jumping..

Not so great - 6/29/2016

Ah yes, Port Saint Lousy. What I’ve found since moving here a few years ago is that Florida as a whole should be called “The Free For All State”. As far as this town goes it’s very obvious. Everyone is trying to get their hand into your pocket, and the town government is no exception. It’s obvious, yet taken for granted here as normal. 90% of the US Medicare fraud is in Florida. As far as the medical profession goes, it’s hard to find a decent doctor to stick with for more than a year or so before they skip town or you realize that their quacks. Dentists here? Forget it. Dentist offices are popping up around here faster than ACA halfway houses. You can’t trust any of them. They are incubators for dentists who want to practice on people to gain enough experience to leave town toward West Palm Beach or south, where the real money is. If you’re not bringing a job with you, or you have health problems, stay where you are because if you come here you’ll be sadly disappointed.

Not a good place for a single retired person. - 7/16/2015

I've lived in Port Saint Lucie for over two years. I came here after retiring from a key position in a large city law firm, and thought this would be a nice place to relax and enjoy my years of retirement. Rumors are that the city beaches had some kind of contaminated waters dumped on them and that they are not safe for swimming. There is a church practically in every corner, there are no community classes to attend and not much to do to stimulate your brain. The nearest opera is in Palm Beach, (there is a very small opera in Vero Beach) but it does not compares to the real thing. If you want to go to a classical concert, you better start driving 1 hour or more to West Palm Beach. The town dies when night falls. Unless you are fun of going to bars and having drinks, there is nothing more to do here. For a single older person this is not a place to stimulate your brain, and even for a couple may still be the same. If you would be happy to go to do some exercises at the Civic Center, or go Wednesdays and Sundays to church, while dying slowly of boredom and inertia, this is the place for you. I honestly cant understand why would anybody with two inches of brain would love it here.

Something nice to say about PSL - 8/15/2014

Something nice to say about PSL. Beach, Weather, Fishing, Flora and Fauna. People need to wake up and not take things for granted. PSL is a tropical oasis. Respect it and understand it for what it offers. PSL is not perfect but they are trying to change that. I see that happening. PSL is not for everyone nor is Florida in general. Too hot , too humid, weather is frightening, Everything costs too much. Bich, moan & complain. There are just as many people that are as excited as heck to live here as the others that dont. PSL in the RiverPark area is bouncing back. I see pride of ownership returning. Its good to see. I like it. PSL is simple and offers a lot of contrasting elements. If you want to retire. Bullseye!! Great restaurant deals, beach, happy hours, weather is perfect for me. High 80's, low 90's summer and perfect the rest of the year. Now if you need a high paying job not in medical field or legal then you may want to study options more carefully. all in all.. great place and only have met the nicest people in PSL and I am from Virginia.

Wiki - 7/18/2014

Getting worse around here. Still lots of foreclosures and bum rentals around town. Cost of living is not as low as you think here, or in Florida in general. Just got the water bill: calculated out to about $720/yr for a couple who conserve water. The cities and towns are all about MONEY. They'll squeeze as much out of you as they can. It's awful how they fine people here and put liens on property just because they have some weeds in the yard or an exposed trash barrel in the driveway. They'll attach a home for thousands which people can't afford, so that the city can cash in when the old folks finally die and the property is sold. I don't know how this abuse was allowed to get so out of hand.

The worst place I ever lived - 10/4/2013

I lived in PGA Village which is the nicest community in town. Once I got outside of the community, I was confronted by a sea of rednecks, tailgaters in jacked up pick-up trucks, trailer park trash people, low life toothless and tattoo'd losers, and a negative energy that I have never experienced anywhere before. It's incredible unfriendly and there is absolutely nothing to do for an adult here. Horrible restaurants selling junk food, no decent shopping, terrible traffic for such a small city, and an overall feeling of apathy in this place. There is zero work ethic and trying to hire competent contractors to work on your house is all but impossible. The worst part of all is the NUCLEAR REACTOR WHICH RELEASES RADIATION all over this city. It's closer to the population than any other reactor in the country, has had the most unplanned shutdown, releases trillium into the reactor pond which ends up in the ground water and is a know carcinogen. Lots of brain cancers and Leukemia here. Research this yourself by searching for "dangers of st lucie nuclear reactor" The radiation plume does not extend over Stuart or Vero which are both better places to live. PSL and Fort Pierce are two disgusting pits of hell which are suitable for low life drug addicts. The police love to write tickets but I never got one. Avoid this redneck hell unless you are one of them. If you decide to move here, be prepared to drive at least 45 miles each way for decent dining and shopping.

Reasonable Cost of Living - 9/29/2013

Been in PSL for 3 years now. Have nothing bad to say about it. Depending on what you are looking for, it is a fair to excellent place to live. Cost of living is low and so is the crime rate. Jobs are few and far between and the pay isnt great. However, people are friendly, mannerly and considerate...much more so than the city we came from. Housing took a major hit during the great recession & is just now beginning to rebound...but still very reasonable. Nice homes for $125k to 250k in decent neighborhoods. Lots of winter residents (snowbirds), but almost no tourists. Beaches are great and uncrowded, but only accessable via two mile-long bridges. There is nightlife but streets pretty deserted by 11pm. A nice compromise between a city and a small town.

OK to visit - 5/30/2013

When you visit you'll think it would be a nice place to live. After living here you'll see how the state and city governments take advantage of the residents. Permits for everything but picking your nose, almost $300 for auto registration, gestapo code police that comb the streets (with taxpayer provided vehicles) looking for old toilets at the curb trash so they can fine you if you don't have a permit, etc... Couldn't even get outside police chief candidates to stay, because of the politics. Had a really sharp city manager that the council fired (probably viewed him as a threat to their regime). If you can stand the shenanigans, the shopping is good and the fishing is close by.
