Mixed Feelings - 4/14/2018

I have mixed feelings about Poughkeepsie because there are equally as many things I love about that town as there are things I hate about it so I'm just going to write a pros and cons list based on what I love and hate. Things I love: 1. The attractive and woodsy scenery. 2. Poughkeepsie is home to some of the best schools in the country (Dutchess Community College is one of the best community colleges in the country and Vassar College is one of the best private universities in the world). 3. Close to New York City (which is probably the biggest plus for me). 4. The autumn season is gorgeous here. 5. It is very affordable compared to other places close to the New York metro area like Long Island, Westchester, and North New Jersey (although that is starting to change). Things I hate: 1. It's kind of a lackluster place to live. There's really not that much to do here. 2. While the setting is attractive, most Poughkeepsie neighborhoods are pretty sketchy and run-down. 3. It's very tricky to get around if you don't drive. You really need a car to live here. 4. Very high violent crime rate. It's not exactly the safest place to live for women and raising a family there is not recommendable. 5. Even though Poughkeepsie is very diverse, too many people there are still very intolerant of other minority groups.

cost of living - 12/9/2012

It'd be great if jobs were available. This city is OK but COL is so much higher in NY than where I was raised in South Maybe I should head west!

POUGHKEEPSIE NY - 5/29/2012

There is a TOWN and CITY of Poughkeepsie. The village of Wappingers Falls is half in the Town of Poughkeepsie. I have realtives in Poughkeepsie who say it is a realtively nice place to live. In the City of Poughkeepsie, MAIN ST is unsafe to walk at night. The Poughkkepsie Train Station will take to to Grand Central Station NYC. Poughkeepsie has had a 1.2% decrease in population since 2000. You should definately come see Poughkeepsie when in NY.

Hard to find housing - 8/23/2010

Whether its a first time buyer or otherwise (I'm a first time homebuyer) its hard to find homes in this dutchess county. Besides the average costs being high, the jobs in the area don't support this costs. Plus if you do find a house around $150,000. you can't get much in good condition. Then the condos and town houses want a fortune for their small places also. Its very hard for middle and lower class families to live here and i beleive that is why the crime rate is so high.

Poughkeepsie not bad - 1/15/2010

Poughkeepsie is nice because it's not far from New York City and has a train connection there for fast access, but it is also suburb living. Itis becoming increasingly more expensive to live here though. \

No central gathering point - 2/9/2009

Pok has good little suburbs but the city itself is pretty desolate. There are bars and restaurants scattered around the town but there's no centralized area where you can walk around or socialize. It has all the big box stores you could ever want but not a lot or charm.

You better have a 2 income family. - 12/17/2007

I was born here and moved back. Now I'm looking to get out. The cost of living here is rediculous. I live by myself on a middle income budget. My apt costs 725. My propane/electric bill is 50 every month(I'm hardly ever home). If you want to just rent a room around here it is still 5 or 6 hundred dollars. They are nuts!!! The upside is the area is booming with many retail stores and there is alot to do. There is public transportation, but the 3 times I've called a cab and waited over a 1/2 hour I cancled. When it snows the main roads are clear, but the side roads are neglected. If you get and apt in the city you had better get guaranteed off street parking. I have seen peoples' cars get hit by drunks on the weekend and good luck fighting everyone else for a space. Plus then you have to wonder where you parked your car every day. AND my neighborhood isn't the worst. Main st and north of main st is the hood. That gets so so around hooker st and montgomery st and clinton/hamilton. Around marist and vassar is ok.

Great place to raise a family - 12/12/2007

I have lived in the Poughkeepsie area for my entire life. It was a great place to grow up, but now in adulthood, it is proving very difficult to make it here on my own. As many people migrate to this area from points south (New York City, Westchester County, Long Island) the prices of everything has gone up. When i am ready to purchase a house, it will not be in this area.
