Fog Question - 8/18/2015

I really have a question more than I comment. I am considering moving from California to Oregon when I retire. I know that the Medford/Grants Pass area has fog in the winter time. Does Redmond also get fog in the winter time?

It's an ok place to live - 2/9/2015

I was born & raised in Redmond. It has good & bad. Good: Very safe place to live & raise a family. Lots of lakes & outdoor things to do year round in the area. Pretty mountain views. Cost of living is no higher than other area's. Starting home prices for decent house is $180K & this is very basic home. No sales tax & property tax is same as California. For those who say "Property tax is so high" No different than any other place. My home is worth $240K & taxes are $2500 a year. 4 bed, 2 bath, 1625 sq foot home with 2 car garage & RV carport. 11,000 sq foot lot & built 2004. Has small town feel with big city stores (Lowes, home depot, Walmart, Walgreens, ect)Doesn't rain much & lots of sunshine (even in cold months we have sunshine). Bad: It stays cold most of the year & very short summers. Not many jobs at all. 90% white people (If you don't like having multi cultures) 50% out of that 90% white are rednecks. The rest are doctors, lawyers, retired well off people. The rednecks are slowly getting educated, LOL!The locals hate anyone from California & have no problem voicing it. They feel the area is getting over populated (which isn't true). Not a lot of restaurants or fast food. Does have meth like any other place, but not like Portland or LA (Crime is very very low). This is all I can think of. I do like the growth of Redmond, we use to have nothing here & everyone knew everyone. It's not like that anymore which is nice. I was so sick of hearing all the gossip when you walked into the old hardware stores. I am however getting tired of the long cold winters. We are talking 9 months of year cold. Doesn't snow like it use to, just cold. So if you are not into cold weather you will not want to live here. You need to come here on a vacation in the summer & see how nice it is. The summers are the best!

Not a good place to garden - 2/15/2013

If you grow things like tomatoes or peppers you will either have to start them early inside or buy a plant that is fairly large since the growing season here is extremely short. We have snow sometime even on the 4th of July.

Cost of Living and Unemployment Much Higher... - 6/30/2008

The figures really need to be adjusted to truly reflect this area's economic standing. Deschutes county has 8% unemployment, and that figure I believe is low. The cost of living is outrageous, the cost of housing is a joke. They've been spinning this area for the last five years to get people who sold their California homes to move here, claiming there were tons of jobs and great weather, etc. All lies - they even hired a marketing firm - that should tell you something! If anyone out there is looking to relocate to the area - seriously visit throughout the year - and talk to real people, not city or county officials.

Vacation in Redmond, May 2007 - 6/11/2007

My husband and I had a vaction in Redmond this year.We stayed at the Eaglecrest resort and had a fabulous time in Redmond,Bend and some of the other surrounding areas. We drove around quite a bit during the week to see what it was like, since we own a townhome in Redmond.(We live in San Diego) We loved the fact that there is so many outdoor things to do,fishing,hiking,biking,golfing,etc.....The prices of gas and food are very similar to San Diego, (ouch) but the housing is more affordable, especially in Redmond compared to Bend. There are all the shops we would want in Bend and more are being built in Redmond.Redmond still feels like a quaint town, compared to Bend. The hospitals I heard form the locals were very good and have many services to offer the ever growing population. And most locals were very friendly. We had heard that we would be treated poorly coming from California. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Redmond and will be back, maybe for good.

Can't afford to live here - 4/21/2006

I want to add another comment about Redmond. I agree with you have to be a native...but you also have to be a rich transplant from CA to live here. The house prices are outrageous and no one can afford to buy anymore. So with the fact that the cost of living is through the roof; there are no jobs and people aren't friendly...heck yeah, come and buy my house from me and let me make a mint on the sale!

Have to have Money to Live here - 4/21/2006

This place is outrageous to live! Cost of living is through the roof. Cost of a very simple, small 3/2 home is around $300,000. Wages are good if you are making about $11 an hour! How do you afford a house with that? I can't wait to get out of here and get to a place where you can afford to raise your kids.

Desert-living - 3/13/2006

The city is mostly lower-to-lower middle class folks where meth is is everywhere. The community is very close and everyone knows everthing about each other. There is nothing to do except every know and then there is a rodeo in town. There are no real restaurants and the only bar in town is a country bar that serves overpriced drinks. The people are not freindly and if your not from Oregon then you will receive worse treatment. There are no jobs and the weather is mostly gloomy. So pack your bags and move to Redmond, OR!
