I've already been here just less than two weeks and I can tell you now, I will NOT EVER intentionally travel to this state again. I cannot understand where all the animosity comes from. Rhode Islanders have a gorgeous state to live in and you can get to everything with just a short excursion. How lucky to be able to hike, go to the beach, go out for great (fresh) seafood, or just go for a leisurely scenic drive? "Oh wait, you can't do that because if you're not traveling at the speed of light you'll get run over or called nasty names, honked (horn blaring) at. I'm doing the speed limit here!" No wonder your speed limits are so low in this state, yall'd kill each other if it was set higher. Where's the FIRE!? Where's common courtesy toward another human being? I said hello and smiled to a woman in passing and she literally snarled at me. WTF is your problem Rhode Island residents? I can't say every person I've confronted with a smile has been uncivil but they sure out-weigh the nicer ones. I even had the luxury of meeting a "real life bully" for the first time, and I'm well into my 50's. That was the event that finally broke the camels back as they say. Totally soured me on your beautiful state. Oh and the bully? Miserable individuals will always get their comeuppance. Sooner or later!

RHODE ISLAND HAS BEAUTIFUL OCEAN BEACHES, OUTSTANDING COLONIAL ARCHECTURE AND GREAT NATURAL BEAUTY OUTSIDE THE MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREAS. WITHIN THE CITIES, WELL-KEPT PARKS AND MILES OF BIKE PATHS TRAVERSE THE STATE. HOUSING PRICES RANGE FROM MODERATE TO ASTRONOMICAL. THE SERIOUS CAVEATS FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING A MOVE TO R.I. ARE OPPRESSIVE TAXES, FEES, AND SURCHARGES ON MOST COMMODITIES; SPENDING BY THE LEGISLATURE SEEMS DONE BY A GROUP OF DRUNKEN SAILORS RESIDING IN THE STATE HOUSE. SEVERAL POLITICIANS HAVE BEEN CONVICTED IN FEDERAL COURT FOR TAKING BRIBES AND MISHANDLING PUBLIC FUNDS AND THE PRIOR SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE IS NOW AWAITING SENTENCING. MANY LIFELONG RESIDENTS HAVE LEFT THE STATE OUT OF DISGUST AND BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO LIVE HERE IN THEIR RETIREMENT. . .ALL THIS BEING SAID, IF ONE CAN GET BY FINANCIALLY, R.I. RI is Unfriendly - 1/16/2014

I lived in RI for 20 years and have moved to Massachusetts. Thankfully I left this state. Although Providence has some residents from elsewhere due to the colleges, the local yocals are so rude and unfriendly. If you do come try to live on Aquidneck Island. There is a great diversity of people who live in Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth because of the influx of people from other states. Contrary to what the people off island think it is not a snobbish community. The unfriendly people live in Providence and surrounding areas. They are sooooo rude and unfriendly. If they don't know you forget it. When walking they don't say hi and they don't want to. There is almost no industry except for banks and insurance and the workers stay forever!!! They don't like change either so forget it if you bring some enthusiasm. They'll take you down. The women are catty and clicky too.

Nothing is perfect - 10/3/2013

I moved to Rhode Island two years ago, and I do not understand why so many residents on these forums are so negative about the state. I've lived in Florida (Miami), Georgia (Atlanta suburbs), and Illinois (Chicago suburbs), and Rhode Island has just as many wonderful attributes as those popular states do. And, for every negative Rhode Island has, each of them has something equally bad. My point is that those of us who are transplants seem to appreciate the state's natural beauty, proximity to Boston, and amazing culinary and arts scene in a way that long-time residents don't. Every week I discover new pleasures (Beavertail State Park, improv classes at Trinity Rep, Rhode Island Festival of Children's Books, the Wurst Kitchen at Chez Pascal, and the frescos at the former St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church to name just a few). I don't like paying high taxes, but I consider it the cost of admission to live some place I truly love. Putting up with scorching summers and impossible traffic was the price I had to pay to get Miami's fabulous winters, international vibe, and pulsating energy. I wish those who are unhappy in Rhode Island would move on or join a group that is organizing around improving government or the local economy. I have a feeling they'd find something to whine about wherever they moved.

I moved here from CA many years ago. To make a long story very short....this place has drained me. The negativity and bitterness of the public is tiring. Change is a nasty word. Sayings like "it isn't what you know, it is who you know" is true here, very true. The whole system here is to keep people so broke they cannot leave. Rude? You will never find ruder people anywhere. They are also selfish, they pride themselves on how much they can steal, whether it be from the government to the person across the street, somebody is out to get your stuff. Rents? The dumps that they charge 1000.00 per month for would be condemned in most every state. The people are ignorant. Rudeness is a way of life here. Plain and simple, don't come here if you want to live a good life. Schools? The very worse. When I moved here I was in high school. The school that I had to attend was so far behind, it was unreal. Nothing has changed.

Can't seem to overcome - 7/7/2013

RI offers immense natural beauty, proximity to Boston/New York, and a climate that's mild by New England standards. Also, RI offers perhaps the lowest cost waterfront property anywhere on the NE coastline. I also think the culture of corruption, both political and in the community, are on the decline. We finally have some politicians who care. However, there remain some serious issues. There is a very small and declining tax base to cover large expenses, still often held hostage by public sector unions. School quality, while not as bad as in some places (e.g. FL), is not competitive vs. property tax costs. Large institutions, such as Brown University and Lifespan (RI Hospital and many others) could be much more involved in providing services in their community (very limited adult or vocational education here beyond the basics). The job market remains among the worst, unless one is working in a specific area of high demand. Accordingly, property sales have increased, but property values remain in trouble. Then there's the New England "provincial attitude," e.g. that people in RI won't commute to Boston. We pay the price here for the mistakes of others. Finally, health care does not compare to offerings in Boston and New York. For those who care, we have gay marriage, legalized medical marijuana, and legal fireworks for July 4th. We also have mandatory Sunday overtime for hourly employees. TF Green is a great little airport, in one of the few responsibly managed cities in the area, Warwick. However, Amtrak still does not stop at the new airport facility, and commuter service to Boston ("T") has thus far been limited and expensive. Providence and Newport do have respectable cultural and entertainment scenes for cities of their size. Overall, it's beautiful in RI if you have the means, and the stomach for the endless adversity. Otherwise, it's a difficult place to prosper, especially as a one-income homeowner. This makes RI a friendly and pretty place to visit, but not a solid investment for business or homeowners to be.

Rhoe Island Taxes - 2/22/2013

Hi everyone My wife and I and my two girls have lived in RI all our lives. The one thing that really gets to me is how this state has been run. I see taxes go through the roof,not just in the state alone but in almost every town and city county. The people who run this state just don't get it, they only like to take care of themself's.

College Review - 1/17/2013

It is nearly impossible to continue or finish a college degree in South Carolina" It is made very clear that education is not important, and the show it by hiring truly uneducated poeple to fun the state college. It is filled with apathetic teachers, and I use the word teacher here loosely. If you can educate yourself then you might stand a chance, but it won't be from the staff or by educated teachers. Everyone down here in the south is too busy playing "confederate war" games. Let me help everyone out.....run out to your yard and bonk yourself on the head and play dead. See if you had learned history then you would know that the South lost, and move onto more current subjects and learn!!!! D

Best of everything - 11/28/2012

I moved to RI about 5 years ago from Colorado and I have to say, I don't think I ever want to move. Unless you are from the midwest, there are rude people everywhere, you have to overlook that and move on, you can't control how everyone will react to you. Personally, I think that you get what you give; if you are rude, they will be rude back. I can honestly say that I have not had anyone be rude to me here when I just start small talk with them. When I ask for directions or a general question, people are more than happy to help out. I love the fact that normally there is not a lot of snow here (winter of 2009/2010 was a different story). They still talk about the blizzard of '78 (in Colorado, there is a blizzard almost every year, so we don't keep track). The beach and ocean is fantastic and so close no matter where you live, there are a ton of classic, quaint New England towns that have great local stores and food. Also, you are so close to everything. In Colorado, it took you forever just to get out of Colorado - and there isn't much in Colorado. Here, Boston is only an hour away, NYC is 3 (or I could take the train to both). Heck, Canada is only 5 hours away. Taking a day or weekend trip is so easy here. I think that people see what they want to see and that if you have been forced to move here, you're going to pick at the littlest things. If you liked where you were and only moved under duress, you won't like it anywhere unless you go back home. I could go on about the open space here as well -- so many great areas to get outdoors no matter what time of year it is, and the diversity of those areas is great. And don't think that you can only live in Portsmouth like that one person said. Portsmouth is great, but so is Bristol, Warren, East Greenwich, Lincoln, Narragansett, Charlestown, etc, etc. There are tons of local farmers markets in the summer and even in winter, they have the winter market in the Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket. You can pretty much drive corner to corner in this state in about 45 minutes and the traffic is a heck of a lot better than in Denver (and not any less rude. In Denver, I pretty much have to get out of my car and tip the driver to let me merge on the highway). So, take what you want of all of these reviews, but if you do have to move to Rhode Island, think a little more positive and change your viewpoint to see the benefits and great places and don't chalk it up as just another "rude" New England

Rude People - 10/2/2011

Though I have met some very nice people in Rhode Island, I'm amazed at the number of rude individuals I've encountered. Every morning, I hope to survive the day without being ridiculed by a total stranger. Rhode Island is full of angry, mean spirited, people who need to drag others down to feel better about themselves. There's an enormous amount of ignorance in this state.

Unfunded Liabilities - 7/5/2011

According to a recent news story, each household in the state of RI would need to pay about $35+K to bring unfunded liabilities. Given the severity of this situation, be prepared to spend more money on taxes. RI will never be tax friendly to retirees who are not from the government sector or a school teacher.

"Rude Island" Worst Place I Have EVER Lived - 6/21/2010

I moved here with my husband and two children a few years ago because my extended family resides here. Since I cant get them to see what life is like in the rest of the world I will probably live here for quite some time, reluctantly. The people are extremely rude. Inhabited by rich snobs and the bitter "lower-class" that are under their feet. There is beauty in some of the nature when it comes to this state and unfortunatly, if it werent for these aweful people you come in contact with this could be a serene place to live. Everything is OVER PRICED. The theme is, pay through the nose for mediocrity or worse, because everyone is either struggling or greedy. This applies to all goods. Things have not changed since the days of the rich vs the poor here. Yes here in RI you are not inbetween, you are either rich or poor because every chance the state gets, and each town within, they it drains your earnings to stuff their pockets. This is also the reason why you will see goods and entertainment are so expesive here. Most families here live check to check or off of credit. I have lived all over the world and I know what it is like outside the walls of RI and I know that there are better and friendlier places to live> ANYWHERE BUT HERE PS: I chose to live in Portsmouth because it is the best of the worst and the scenery sometimes makes me feel like I'm not in Rhode Island anymore.
