Don't be fooled by the Small Town Feeling - 6/2/2018

I moved here 3 years ago, because I wanted to raise my children in a small town. We lived in a big city with a lot of crime and the some kids were always in trouble. I did not want that for my kids. So we moved here. The crime here can be just as bad as the city. The kids here are not supervised and allowed to do whatever they want. Some of them walk around with guns and knives. If you move here be careful who your kids play with (even if your neighbors seem ok). The work environment here is also another problem. The people here love cliques and that is a serious problem on the job. I have actually seen people team up against certain individuals and make up lies on them to get them fired. Another problem that I noticed is that the city misappropriates their funds. The city built a huge recreational field house that cost 9 million, but the roads are in bad condition. The city has a really bad sewer gas smell and need to do more to correct the sewage issue. In some parts of town, you can see raw sewage on the ground. The homes here is another issue. I do not think that codes exist here. About 50% of the homes are in really bad condition and need to be repaired. Most of those homes are located in North Salina. If you are traveling here beware of some of the roads. Some of the four way stops do not even have stop signs. Lastly, some of the people here are envious. Yes, they are envious. If you have a really nice car I suggest you park it in the garage. Some of these people here just might scratch it up just for spite. Some of these people do not want you to have anything. There are a lot of people that have garages off site. They will buy land and just build a garage to put their cars in it. And, if you decide to move here make sure that you have your housing arranged, because these people here are different. You may end up without housing or have to live somewhere you don't want to live. These people are hateful and could care less. If I could give Salina a nickname. I would say it is the city of hate not love. If you start up your own business and turn a hobby into a business they will hate you. I have seen a lot of people move in here and move out, because of they felt unwelcomed.

Salina also has skunks,turtles and deer(besides t - 2/7/2015

Salina in some parts is so wild that there are animals, tutles and skunks I saw at night while dring a beer outside the market near Tony's Pizza factory ownd by the "Schwan" family. There are people in Salaina as well. You can see the eating real beef and real great beef hamburgers or at the walmart. Most people work at the Tony's factory or there is a chocalate "russetts" 20 miles away. I was there for almost a whole year. I stayed at the Salina Rescue Mission for free however nothing is really "free" as it may appear.. Housing- Salina downtown purports to have cheap rooms, the problem is the people who control those rooms ask a million questions and have you fill out lots of forms. They are so picky thats why lots of us new comers to the city, end up at the Salina Rescue Mission. When I say the Salina resue mission is "free"its not really free -you have to live with ex-cons who have lived there for years(not kidding)and curfew is always 530 pm to listen to a Jesus speech or some kind of guest preaching. before the "free" meal. If you work at Tony's Pizza factory( next door) you can save a bit of money although Tony's pizza only hire's temporaries at the temporary service place next to it. But if you tell them you stay at the rescue mission they may hire you more than other people. Most of the regular employees are from Vietnam. Don't be jealous its not easy working at Tony's pizza, though you can eat all the free pizza you want. Many of the "ex-cons" from the rescue mission hang out at the downtown Salina Public Library. Because of that there is EXTREME TENSION in this library the Library Security guards stare you down. Not only that but anyone getting on the Salina bus from the rescue mission the "Bus Drivers" hate and despise and often 86 you from the buses so you may need to get a car. So by the fact you stay at the rescue mission the bus drivers and library security guards treat you like as if you were in a nut house. Despite this, Salina is a great place because the old 50 style reataurants have the best "real beef" hamburger I had ever tasted in my life. plenty of "real beef" in this city. there is wild life and places to walk and the air is clean and fresh and winters are not too cold. and also the walmart and tony'ys pizza is walking distance to the rescue mission. On Sundays you can catch the free bus from walmart parking lot and go to the casino for free almost to topeka and it leaves at 8 am sharp. the casino is cool because you actually play "craps" like Las Vegas.

Great, affordable place to live - 2/22/2008

50,000 & 2 colleges make Salina a great place to live. Low crime...fairly good climate ( a little windy)...no traffic...fantastic sunrises and sunsets..good work ethic...friendly and responsible folks...flint hills and Solomon River add to nature's beauty. I've lived in Indianapolis, IN, Toledo, OH, Roanoke, VA, St. Louis, Mo & St. Joseph, MO. For Quality of Life...it's hard to beat Salina!
