Almost Perfect - 12/3/2012

I have lived in Santee for 36 years and the changes have been extensive. Traffic has been, and still is, a big problem. However, that's a problem in most CA towns and cities. Santee is on the eastern border of San Diego, which is pretty much where the jobs are. That said, Santee is a great little community. Other than having no hospital, it is well-run, and almost self-contained, especially if you don't mind shopping at fairly low-end stores. I don't mind at all. The people are friendly, the layout is very convenient (Costco, Walmart, Home Depot, Office Depot, Michaels) all in a loop. And across the street from the loop is Town Center with many other stores (Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Staples). You get the point. Only two real negatives. It's in California which is close to communist, and very expensive, and second, Santee is very hot and dry. If I had my way, I'd lift Santee out of CA and move it to, say, Idaho, far from the leftist loons running our state.

Very Expensive - 1/11/2012

San Diego in general is a very expensive place to live. Santee is less so but compared to the rest of the country we are way over charged!

Santee - 2/21/2008

Santee has a great quality of life, low crime, good schools(some of the best schools east county has to offer), fairly short commute time, as it is fairly well central in location. Santee has grown, and was a small town and some don't like it. Though, for some of us, that change is very welcome. We have a lot of community involvement, great parks, lot's of activities for the kids to participate in, and planners have decided to update our looks considerably. Home values went up across the nation, and now of course are comming down. If you follow the trends you'd notice Santee always does better than most cities around here, high or low people move to Santee for it's value. More bang for your buck. I my house last year(5/7) and expect to pick up a house out here at least a hundred thousand less than I sold mine for. Sent out here in the '80's from New Jersey and have lived in Santee for over 15 years. Never have had a racist encounter, people are church going and friendly, and I will never leave.

Weather in Santee - 2/21/2008

Santee is a semi-desert climate. We don't really get get all four seasons, weather wise. Our fall, winter, and spring weather, are fairly the same. Our summer go from great warm weather to an unbearably hot desert. The hottest months are August and September, where temperatures are often in the '90's to 100's. Just over the hill, in San Diego the temperatures are usually 10 degrees cooler in the summer and 10 degrees warmer in the cooler months.

It's obvious that you are a snooty liberal, and it's great to hear you'll be leaving. God (oops, did I say that?) help the place you land. San Fran would be a good choice. I've lived in Santee for over 30 years, and in the early years, Klantee may have been an appropriate moniker. But no more. Sure, it's pretty white (if you include the 19% Hispanic population as white), but it isn't any more racist than, say, Hillcrest. There are several decent places to eat, and middle of the road shopping. And we can't forget our "discount loop" (Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Office Depot, etc) which can be very convenient. The real problems are traffic congestion and hot summers. The traffic engineers should be fired for incompetence. And we must just live with the climate. Population hasn't really grown too much in the last 5 years, and that's a good thing. Overall, Santee is a bedroom community - safe, quiet, and rather peaceful. Bob

SANTEE is not KLANTEE - 7/5/2006

You give Santee a bad rap, Santee is by far no hicksville place like that. It is a low crime, suburb of, in the beautiful county of, San Diego. I grew up here, but have lived a couple of other places. One of which I actually got a job because I was white!(NEW JERSEY) You can't afford to live here, but no where else comes close to the standard of living we enjoy here, you pay for paradise. Great weather, decent schools, clean, close to beaches, mountains, deserts, L.A., Mexico. That kid that did that shooting at Santana was NOT a product of our school district! He wasn't even from around here, his problems started elsewhere. We certainly are not perfect, no place is. When I look at what is out there, on web sites like these, everyplace is so much cheaper, but no place is better! I rather starve than move!

very very suburban - 7/3/2006

I'm not surprised it is a hotbed of the Klan (my husband calls it Santucky, which is rude to Kentuckians everywhere). Very rightwing, it seems that every other car sports a Bush-supporting bumpersticker; Duncan Hunter (on the conservationists' Worst Voting Record list year after year) is the House Rep. I'm a writer, my spouse is here doing an architecture degree, and we haven't found much of anyone to talk to outside of school in downtown SD; we can't wait to get out of here. Overall, San Diego and its hinterlands are very conservative places, so we won't be hanging around. The prices for homes and condos are through the roof, especially downtown -- they predict a home price crash is coming soon, but the starting prices are so high, it won't matter much to us. I just gave spouse Places Rated 2006 for a birthday present: he's got one more year to go, so he's got to find somewhere we REALLY want to live while he gets his license.

Santee is not Klantee - 7/2/2006

Santee has got a bad rap. It is no more a racist place than any other place is in America. I grew up here, have lived a few other places and moved back. I know there are asses that feel that they live here because it is a primarily white area. Their are way too many republicans for my liking too, but, it in no way means that it is "hicksville". The kid that did that shooting was not a product of the Santee school system, he wasn't even from here! His problems started and were set a long time before he got here.....We have a great community, great shopping, a booming economy, the best climate in the world, pretty good schools, super safe neighborhoods, close proximatey to lakes, mountains, deserts, downtown, beaches, but NO place is perfect and ours is no exception. We have an area that is as near to perfection as you could get, except that housing/cost of living is way out of line- but quality of life is why. If you could find better I would sure like to hear about it! I am struggling to stay here because I cannot find anything that compares, and I have been a homeowner here since '95. I love San Diego.
