I’ve lived in this city for for three years now. I’ve lived all over and I must say this city gives you a small town feel. Right outside of a large city I feel safe and the income level for home owners seems to be about 65K or 70k per household of two

Worst place to live around Atlanta - 12/16/2012

Smyrna, Ga is the worst place to live because it is low income with a 10% unemployment rate. Large retailers have left the area with the exception of Walmart. The housing market took the biggest hit in Smyrna because the homes were that of blue collar manual laborers. The foreclosures are extremely distressed and sell for around $20,000 to $60,000. If you buy a house in Smyrna to be close to the airport, downtown and Buckhead consider that you will be traveling back to those places for your entertainment as well. There is nothing to do in Smyrna. Do you want to drive 20 to 30 minutes for cheap housing? The nearest whole foods is in Marietta. The nearest bookstore is by Cumberland mall in Atlanta. I bought a house in Smyrna in 1999 and put $50,000 worth of upgrades including a salt water inground pool and hot tub and it appraised and just sold for what I bought it for in 1999. I am told that I must consider myself lucky because at least I am not in an upside down mortgage and I was able to sell and get out of this area. I have a child now and the schools are horrible with gang violence, poor academic curriculums (crct prep only to pass a test - no projects, no field trips, just teachers yelling at children and telling them they don't get paid enough to teach.) the demographics of Smyrna are majority black, hispanic and the rest old, fixed income, empty nesters, whites. Do not waste your time or money on this area.

Too expensive for this type of city - 7/18/2012

The thing about the Smyrna/Vinings area is that you have some very nice areas, that are right next door to a very bad area. I just don't want to pay a ton of money to live in an area where my car has been broken into just dropping my son off at daycare, and my kids are actually the minority at school, and get physically abused because she has nice clothes, shoes, bookbags, etc... I would NOT recommend this area to anyone. If you have the money, move just a little closer towards Buckhead. Much nicer area...

Nice place to live - 3/2/2011

Smyrna/Vinings area is a short commute to downtown, the airport and close to shopping & venues. Wide variety of homes and price ranges. The city has a walking trail system that extends through several counties. The Vinings area is trendy and nouveau. Smyrna proper has invested in redevelopment to create several work, live & play neighborhoods. Though Cobb county schools are highly rated, the high schools in Smyrna are not. The HS are Title I schools mainly because the district rezoned the attendance areas and are now feeding students in from other areas to conform to the No Child Left Behind Act. Many parents enroll their children in the variety of highly rated private schools. It is definitely an attractive & convenient are of town if you can afford private schools for children in the upper grades.

Growing Pains - 12/2/2010

Smyrna is a suburb of Atlanta, about 17 miles north of the city. It is rapidly developing as one of the best places for the dollar with a reasonable commute into Atlanta.

Atlanta Metro for Quality of Life - 12/7/2009

Chicago to Atlanta was an enlightening experience. The facts of life: When you have money and resources, you can make a great home and life for yourself in any city when others cannot do so because the resources will not permit, period. You do get to choose the climate in which you will live with and without money. Or, if you cannot, then prepare for Atlanta's wet, rainy, dreary days on end without sun. This ain't no Denver, Colorado or San Diego, California. Adjust to days without sun. People are very friendly here. I think customer service is great here comparatively speaking. Far better than Chicago's very poor customer service mentality. Bad customer service here is still better than good service in Chicago. Atlanta Metro, Sandy Springs, the North Suburbs and Smyrna areas are just wonder areas to live. I enjoy Cobb County. Law enforcement is on task. The housing options range for all kinds of income levels. Heart of Atlanta and the south, east and west areas of Atlanta, areas near the airport are not attractive to me personally. Even if there are beautiful affordable housing in the nearby beautiful enclaves. I am looking to buy neighborhood and community social activities, not just housing and nearby malls. That's Qualtiy of life for me. Highway traffic is the most efficient way to travel in Atlanta Metro frustrating as it may be. However, traveling thru the city, you are well advised to get maps, Garmins and other navigational devices if you are avoiding the highways. The downside to Atlanta travel is not the traffic - like most city during rush hour - its that the metro area is not on a gridiron. So leaving and entering a new metro area city or county can take place in the blink of an eye that's confusing and disorienting. Secondly, when you leave the Highways 285, 75, or 85, you don't have a straight shot to anywhere. The street patterns in Atlanta Metro area is very convoluted. Now that's frustrating at first. Got to get used to that. Get the navigational devices in every one of your cars, hand-held device is necessary. This financial crisis has hit everywhere if you are mid-income. Religious preference... - 12/15/2007

I agree with some of the other postings... If you're not Baptist, you may not want to publicize it that much... I grew up in a northern suburb of the city, and remember all-to-well, being told I was "going to hell" because I was Catholic. Atlanta is a strong religious community (very appealing to some), but also very opinionated, and not shy about sharing it (in the most "christian way" of course).

Transportation System - 8/4/2006

The public transportation system in and around Atlanta is terrible. They need to step it up to cities like Chicago and New York.
