Tomah! Rural Living at it's finest. - 10/23/2013

Tomah is a perfect town if you enjoy a rural lifestyle and rural activities. One person's cultural activites are not another's. They do have a community theater which hosts several plays every year. In the summer months they have family night in the park where the city host a family event, movies, etc. Tomah is located in the heart of Cranberry country and nearby Warrens host an annual Cranfest which draws visitors from around the US. Nearby Camp Douglas is home to Mill Bluff State Park which features a scenic bluff that visitors are able to climb and enjoy the view from the top. The Elroy-Sparta bike trail runs through Tomah. Nearby Milston has miles of trails on state owned land for 4-wheelers to explore. For the hunter there is an abundance of state owned land in the area that is open to public hunting. In the winter months numerous residents take advantage of the many snowmobile trails throughout the area as well as snowshoeing, and cross country skiing, and ice fishing on Lake Tomah. Speaking of fishing with the abundance of cranberry marshes in the area fishing is popular and fish are plentiful with a variety of species from Cropies to Bass to Northern Pike. Water skiing on the lake in the summer as well as kayaking. Tomah has 6 family friendly parks in the city, two located on the lake. A bowling alley and a movie theater also provide family entertainment for area residents. And if that's not enough as mentioned in other posts it's a short drive to Wisconsin Dells or over to nearby Lake Wazee recreational area where among other activities visitors can enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling. Yes that's correct in the middle of WI. Conveniently located at the intersection of TWO major US interstates Tomah is a great starting point to anywhere you might want to visit. So Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but Tomah has plenty to offer beyond a bunch of bars, fast food joints, and a Walmart. Oh and I forgot to mention to local Amish community which richly add to the local culture and contribute many hand made products to the local shoppers as well as a Native American population that host many cultural activities of their own and invite the public to join annually in their celebrations.

Why? - 4/25/2011

I can not understand why anyone would want to live in Tomah. Perhaps if you like to drink too much and owned a tavern and did some favors for people it would make sense in a convoluted way.

Tomah Wisconsin - 6/23/2006

Tomah has a lake. There are recreational activities within 50 mile radius; Wisconsin Dells, Devils Lake. Tomah itself has no cultural activities of any significance. One decent restaurant opened in 2006, fast food joints are plenty. The municipality of Tomah has old school fellers on the council. The school system is nothing to write home about. The town has a significant transient, Fort McCoy connected, employees, who typically live in apartments in Tomah or nearby Sparta. Fort McCoy, an army base is on the outskirts of the town. Winters are harsh and long. Summers can be fleeting. The town has a small hospital and two outreach clinics that provide basic and intermediate level health care. The nearest urban area is LaCrosse, 40 miles away.

There's a Wal Mart here - 6/4/2006

Unless you have family roots and connections to this town, there is no strong reason for living here. The town has a VAMC, which has its own bureaucratic and cronyism issues. Walmart is an another major employer. Toro and Cardinal Glass employ the local blue collared fellers. The town has many bars.
