Safe Place to Live - 7/20/2013

Wheaton is a pretty safe place to live. There are few major crimes that occur each year. It scored an 80 out of 1000 on City Data information.

Beautiful Place to Live, But Something is Missing - 6/28/2012

We moved here from the fast pace of a big city in another state and immediately loved the small town feel to Wheaton. It is a very nice place to live, and there is a lot to do to entertain our young children. Having lived in a different part of the country all of my life, I can say that what seems like a large majority of the local people here routinely compete with their neighbors, talk poorly of their neighbors, seem to be obsessed with having more than their neighbors, and seem to be very unhappy. I think it is a culture here that I am not used to and have been a bit taken back by it. I lived in an area of our country where millionaires were everywhere. Although I am middle class, I am used to living in the vicinity of very wealthy people. I can honestly say that the very wealthy people I previously lived near to, whom had far more money and worldly experience than anyone I have ever met from Wheaton, IL, were far more pleasant to be around than many of the people from Wheaton. I have sat in restaurants, a library, a YMCA, and shopping centers and have routinely heard people gossiping about how "that person they grew up with is such a loser" or "oh, I grew up with that family, their a bunch of nobodies". It seems that the people here have apparently never lived anywhere else and this is their whole universe, and they seem to think they are the experts on all of their neighbors' lives and affairs. Considering how many churches there are here and how proud this area is for having so many churches, I find this to be very hypocritical and sad. I wish the people were more socially developed here. If I can overlook that, I can say it really is such a beautiful place to live - there is plenty of nature, shopping centers, restaurants, activities, Chicago is very near, it is perfect otherwise. The cost of living is reasonable and much of the housing and local shopping areas are new construction, which is nice. Despite the odd culture here, I still give it two thunbs up.

property taxes - 7/16/2009

Housing is expensive but real estate taxes are even higher. I can no longer afford to live here.

An idyllic life close to the big city - 5/14/2009

Mature tree-lined streets, a charming little downtown area next to the Metra (rail service) filled with decent restaurants, and a low crime rate - all within 25 miles of Chicago (for those who must have a slice of the big city)... We can't really ask for anything more.

Wheaton is a great place to live. Very safe. Friendly people, good shopping and resturants, close enough to Chicago to take advantage of all there is to do there but lots of entertainment near by also.

Wheaton - Best place to live in Illinois - HANDS D - 8/1/2006

To live in Wheaton, Illinois is to step back in time - in a good way. The public school system is excellent. Most children live within walking distance to a school. There are playparks everywhere and most nights / weekends you will find impromptu baseball games with Dads and sons, as well as Mothers and newborns taking walks without hesitation around town. Friday nights bring "classic car night" to the "downtown" area where people socialize over ice cream cones while listening to 50's music. Churches abound, and Wheaton College is a big part of the living in the town. To live in Wheaton is to live in a Norman Rockwell painting - neighbors know everybody (and watch out for each other), kids play - riding bikes to the parks without hesitation, and people "hop on the train to Chicago for a 35 minute ride to enjoy a night of theatre". This town should make the top list of best places to live, it is way way way better than Naperville, Illinois not only because of its deep-rooted sense of community, but also because of its family friendliness, (voted #1 most healthiest town in 2005 by Chicago Magazine)and its ability to walk places and really live in a "neighborhood" ... the town hosts the annual County Fair (held each July) and the Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks are the best in Illinois. Oh - and did we mention, Wheaton has its own free zoo? Cosley Zoo is an AZA accredited facility and offers a great respite in town for quick day trips, picnics, and seasonal events. Next time you find yourself west of Chicago, Illinois take a stop in Wheaton!

Wheaton - 7/1/2006

We have resided in Wheaton since 1990. Our children went to school in the Wheaton school system from pre-kindergaten through high school. We found the schools to be excellent, in fact, part of the reason we selected Wheaton was the reputation of it's school system. Wheaton has the acclaimed Wheaton College and is close to the College of Dupage. Another reason we selected Wheaton was its excellent park system and location relative to the Prairie Path (running/walking/biking system) that is easily accessible from most parts of the city and takes you thoughout the Dupage County. Wheaton does have an abundance of Churches, but we never felt pressured to participate if we did not want to do so. There are little if any industrial properties, has just enough commercial retail, is close enough to shopping centers in nearby communities, has a downtown that is undergrowing revitalization and is an easy communte to Chicago or other suburbs. The tollway system is close by and the Metra train stops in downtown Wheaton, and yes there is available parking for communters. The County Seat is here, and there are no taverns. The city has that small town feel since it's growth is limited by surrounding communities. You know you are living in a good community when strangers stop and ask if you want to sell your house because they want to raise their family in your neighborhood and have their kids go to your schools.

Conservative Sheltered Suburbia - 4/13/2006

This is the epitomy of "suburbia", except everyone loves to drive gas guzzling SUVs. Everyone here loves to "support the troops", but they wont do anything beyond buying a 2 dollar magnet for their arab oil guzzling SUV. The schools are good, I will give this place that, but there isn't anything to do. Churches are literally everywhere. I can't drive to school without seeing 5 different churchs, most of which are regressive and conservative. This is probably because Wheaton College is located here, the Harvard for Christians. Everyone is very conservative and very wierd. It's not unusual to see people walking in downtown wheaton with a backpack on the wrong way. Its a very wierd town. If you happen to be very church going and conservative, you will probably fit right in. Us Wheatonites have what we call the "Wheaton Bubble", because wheaton is its own bizzare sheltered town. Saying something like "God doesn't exist" or even questioning the bible will get you horrific responses, as most students at my previous high school went on to go to schools like Moody Bible Institute. The town life is boring. The only thing to do is drugs or church, or sit on the computer all day. Theres several coffee houses downtown, full of college students who believe god created the world in 7 days and is only 10,000 years old. If you fall anywhere left of hardcore conservative, you will be ostricized and harassed. You will not fit in and will abhor this town. Politics and Culture go hand in hand, because if you aren't Republican, you are some heathen who supports giving tax dollars to crackheads and not racist, which to most people, is beyond comprehension, as most of this town is white, and the white people inhabiting it our biggots.
