UPdate - 1/5/2014

The statistics are out of date on San Jose. We have a majority of Hispanics and a minority of caucasians. Our crime rate the last two years (due to poor governing by the city fathers) has skyrocketed. The priorities of the city council do not favor the needs of the city and we're seeing the effects of poor management in the degeneration of our infrastructure, parks, police and fire services. The parks are disgusting! There's mass corruption in the governing body to the extent that some county and city officials are serving jail time. This is 2014. The character of the city is being replaced with plastic imitations of culture and housing. It's also getting very crowded.

Best of both worlds - Proximity to Natural Playgro - 6/24/2013

San Jose is one of the few places that offer a dozen weekend getaways within 1-3 hours that range from world class museums, hiking & biking state parks, visiting national parks, and gorgeous beaches. On a Saturday, you can drive to Santa Cruz beaches in the morning and by late afternoon be in Yosemite.

San Francisco Bay Area Climate - 6/18/2013

The temperate climate is what attracts people to the Bay Area. I've lived here for more than 60 years. I am about 50 miles from San Francisco bay. The marine layer keeps the entire Bay Area very cool, even during summer months. I have never required home air conditioning because the home is well insulated and never goes above 84 degrees indoors when the outside temperature is more than 95 degrees. In the evening when the fog is over the bay the cold air cools nearby counties. On rare occasions that cooling marine layer is absent, and that leads to noticeably hotter weather. But those days are rare.

Housing, Good Schools and Distance to work - 12/28/2012

It is challenging to find a place with good schools, reasonable home prices and close to work place. One or the other must be compromised to live in silicon valley.

San Jose Native Opinion - 12/3/2012

I've lived in San Jose for 35 years (& 4 in San Francisco). We are hoping to finally move out of state soon, if the job market allows. We were lucky to be able to buy a house here, but most native San Jose friends had to move away in the 90's. Here's what I like about San Jose: Good police force (much of San Jose is safe & well-patrolled); Downtown area is cleaner than places like San Francisco; great restaurants & wide variety of stores; a lot to do if you like man-made entertainment (movies, trampolines, go-carts, water parks, amusement parks, etc); lots of paved bike trails; people are pretty liberal here; there is a lot of cultural & racial diversity; the hills around San Jose are pretty to hike in or drive through; summer, spring, & fall are nice seasons for weather; we have good libraries; we have Spanish Immersion public school (your kids can learn Spanish for free). A lot of attractive houses & safe neighborhoods/decent schools..unless you go into downtown, East San Jose, Alum Rock, Or Edenvale/Santa Teresa; there are more jobs here (but a LOT of competition. Here's what I hate about San Jose: Rediculously crowded; a large percentage of people living here are not from California...no one remembers the way it used to be; middle-class here equals poor..you need to make +$150,000 a year for a family of 4 if you want to afford afterschool daycare & extracurricular activities; relatedly, the average family in much of San Jose have college degrees from Ivy League schools, which makes us SJSU grads have a harder time competing for jobs; College here is too expensive; elementary class sizes are +30 at all grade levels; Property taxes are insane here; everything costs much more here than in a place like Salinas or Bakersfield..because people here can afford it; there are crowds everywhere at most times of the day...hours of sitting in lines & traffic; you cannot eat any fish you catch from any of the lakes anywhere near here, wouldn't want to swim in them, & the campgrounds are all filled up all the time & over-crowded; it doesn't snow here, & people wish it would; People here are angry, rude, & impatient; teenagers use the f-word in place of, "uh," especially when your 9 year old is watching them; 14 year old girls here wear girdle-tight Daisy Duke shorts that are too short & expose their butt cheeks..you will need eye bleach. Any of the fun activities I listed in the above, "pro's" section will cost an arm & a leg, & there will be a crowd waiting in line; kids need to be accompanied by an adult for most activities, because it is a big city with a lot of creepy pedophiles; kids who are not supervised tend to act like they are Johnny Knocksville from, "Jackass," it's the San Jose teen culture..ie your property will be stolen off your porch, you will be blocked in the road by 16 teen boys playing, "bike party," in the lanes; your kids will think they're deprived because they don't get to have an iPhone, iTouch, laptop, & ski trips to Aspen..and a house with six bedrooms.

I am still in shocked with the high ratings of San - 10/8/2012

I grew up in san jose most of my life for over 20 years. Many women around me end up with cancer and both of my parents died before turning 60. This place is extremely polluted with water contamination run off from high tech companies. I remember the first day I drove out of the city and within 2 days my skin cleared up from all skin rashes and bumps. That's how dirty and contaminated the air and water pollution is. I moved away north of california for cooler cleaner air, water, and weather and to the mid US states just to see what it's like. By comparison, San Jose is over priced with the housing $300 for an old broken down home! you can get so much more for your money for only half the price of san jose. People in san jose are into themselves. It's an unfriendly place. Crime is serious here even around the Evergreen area new homes. Most homes have metal bars on their doors and windows. Half of my relatives have had home invasion robbery when they go on vacation. Both me and my spouse had drive by shooting in the Evergreen and Berryessa area. The schools are rated the lowest according to Great Schools. Just like every other day, there would be helicopter over our heads. Not sure what or who they are searching for...gang? drugs? who knows. Even though they force people to license their pets, I still see un neutered pitbulls roaming the street and could hurt little children. The weather is a bit too hot for my taste. Its a boring city with little entertainment or interesting things to do like SF or more north up california. We've been hit and run many times, not just once. A guy would side swipe us and just drove off without ever looking back. The drivers are insane. They often have "spare the air" days because the pollution is just so bad, many people become asthmatic. All of my health conditions went away after we moved out of San jose Bay area. The Marin county has the highest rate of breast cancer in the WORLD ! not just the US or the State. Not sure if it's the cost of living or something but people around san jose are very very money hungry. We've lived in the mid states and we can leave our shoes , cars, toys outdoor and nothing get stolen. If you live in san jose, they will steal everything! you would think such a wealthy area people don't rob but it's not true. Most women walk around with breast implants. People are really really fake and materialistic in a bad way. While the schools do not care about children. They constantly ask us for help to pay for papers, donation, soaps, tissues, etc. I wonder what happens to all the taxes they collected from all the wealthy high tech workers? Homeless people are every where, but I think that situation is common up and down california. Just about every other person is on some kind of anti depressant. I personally experienced a drive by shooting when I was in high school . The guy killed off several kids from our school. The positive things about san jose might be the weather. However, compared to the rest of the cities in this area, I don't think san jose is as cool as salinas, monterey santa cruz, etc. They have one discovery museum for kids which is very very tiny compared to the ones in other states we've been to. parking fees are crazy like $10. I remember living in the mid states, toysrus would leave their full set of thomas trains out for the children to play and no one would steal the toys. In san jose, no store is stupid enough to leave a thomas train set out. All the toys would be gone in a day if the merchants leave their merchandise out. People will steal everything even old shoes. totally creepy. Horrible community. Totally over priced, high crime, poor education, violent, crazy drivers, polluted, and unhealthy. Yes there are other good things such as diversity. San jose got many good foods and various ethnic groups such has hispanics and vietnamese population. 30% Asian and a ton of Hispanics. But there are diversity every where up and down california not just san jose. the homes are like boxes. you can literally jump from one roof to the next.

A small million dollar home - 7/27/2012

The cost of housing in San Jose is not that bad if: 1. You have parents who will gift you a million dollars. 2. You're an engineer working for a high tech firm. 3. Both you and your spouse earn executive level salaries. 4. You live with your parents. Otherwise you're paying an exorbitant amount of money in rent or you live somewhere in the middle of the state and commute 2 hours to your job in San Jose. For some, it might well be worth it. It's beautiful out here. The beach, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe are only a few hour's drive away. Paradise has its price.

Not for me - 6/27/2012

I have lived in San Jose for about 7 years. Prior to living here I have lived in San Fran, San Mateo, Pacifica (which I really liked except for the fog), and other towns on the Peninsula. The traffic in San Jose is terrible! That's a given anywhere around here. I live on the boarder of Los Gatos and it's not too bad. East San Jose...avoid!!! High crime zone. In general for this city, people (strangers) are not too friendly, not a community feel (except my street), and it's just a big mass of track homes with no character. People I think live here just to commute to Palo Alto, etc. This is the case for me and many I know. It's somewhat (ehh hmm) affordable compared to areas like Saratoga and Cupertino, although I would not buy a house here. Schools suck! The good: It's close to Silicon Valley (peninsula area), HP Pavilion has great events, downtown is small but a nice feel. Not my idea of good quality of life, for sure. I'm planning on moving soon, so that should tell you there how much I enjoy this city :)

Peaceful with access to Ocean, Mountains, Good Wea - 10/30/2010

I love living in San Jose, CA because of its good weather, low crime, important place in Silicon Valley. It is close to the mountains, national park Yosemite, oceans off of Santa Cruz mountains and San Francisco. Its educational systems include access to Stanford University, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University with Berkeley at some distance. All kinds of birds visit my bird feeder in the backyard. People may be racist but I have not really felt it much. A lot of very diverse communities do live here and mix with their own for the most part. There is very large number of hilly parks for going hiking and roads for biking. You can grow flowers most of the year. Beautiful city and a more expensive but ever more beautiful San Francisco is not too far to visit (60 miles). Las Vegas and Reno are short flight away. For international travel, San Francisco serves as an affordable gateway.

San Jose is perfectly situated in the state. We're less than one hour from the Pacific, less than four hours from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and less than six hours from the desert. Whatever your preference is, we have it.

Best Climate Anywhere in the Lower 48 States - 3/10/2010

I grew up in Ohio and later in life moved to San Jose, CA. For those who are looking for the ideal climate with no humid days (trust me you won't ever feel humidity) try San Jose, CA or anywhere in Santa Clara County. Many a Christmas I have gone to Christmas tree farms to cut a tree wearing only a tee-shirt. This isn't warm like winters in Florida but it is very nice here. The only draw back is the expense of living in this area. Most of the population lives within 30 miles of the coast and like any commodity price follows demand. Housing costs are high and yards small but there is the wide and beautiful outdoors to enjoy in its many splendid forms. Once here you will never be able to consider living anywhere else. Welcome to the Hotel California. Check in any time you like, but you can never leave. So true.
