Niskayuna, New York SperlingViews

Niskayuna, NY is a smaller town near Albany, NY w. very easy access to every convenience you would want. Our son attends Rosendale Elementary which I have no complaints about. In fact, he started k-garten with delays in almost all areas but now after one year is actually advanced in vocabulary and on grade level in all other areas. The teachers do not "drive" the children without letting them also be kids - they have play/creative play time, while learning at the same time. The teachers also strive to have strong communication with parents (they can all be reached via email at any time) and welcome parent participating in the classroom. Niskayuna is a family-first community. This is also evident in our high school taxes (double what you'd pay in the south). Most people don't mind because you really get what you pay for. There are never too many homes for sale in Nisky because everyone wants to live here. My only complaint is the relatively high cost of living. We are very close to our neighbors - our street is like a family. There is no crime. My son is safe, happy and getting a great education.

Cold in the Northeast - 12/8/2008

Here in upstate New York, we do get four distinct seasons. Most people here love the spring, summer, and fall. Winter is a different story -- it is cold and long. This morning (Dec 8), it was 6 degrees (F) when I woke up -- and it was windy. If you can handle the long winters, the other seasons are beautiful.[read more...]

Milder climate than one might think - 5/26/2007

Although there are cold spells during the winter, the overall climate is relatively mild. Spring and fall are the best times of year with warm days and crisp evenings. Summer can be relatively hazy and humid (although nowhere near as bad as the deep south and Mississippi valley) with daytime temperatures in the upper 80's and low 90's (average is low to mid 80's). Snowfall in the winter is less than areas to the west as there is no lake effect snow here. The major snowstorms are the Nor'easters.[read more...]
