| Agree with the Racist Comment - 4/18/2013
I completely agree with Ophelia and I'm a white person. Seriously, I saw actual (wannabe) Nazis here with their SS and confederate flag tattoos. The craziest example was when I went down to the jail - once with two black friends who were trying to get married quit before he deployed (the magistrate was out) and once to bail out a white friend. The first time, with my black friends, we were herded into a nasty hot airless room to wait for hooooours - but in the end were told to leave and come back some other day. The second time? I was walked back and put in what I can only describe as the "white's only" waiting room. Air conditioning, comfy chairs, not an ounce of melanin... and service was quick and friendly all of a sudden. Same place, so, yeah, that was no accident. I'm from the deep south (Southern GA) but this place has floored me with it's racism and classism. Don't live here. You deserve better and there are a lot of really nice cities within no more than 40mins of this shithole. [read more...]

| Good living in Greensboro - 8/3/2011
Greensboro, NC is not the most exciting place to live but it is a good place to raise a family or to slow down from metro life. There are plenty of cultural activities to take part in, lots of lovely parks, and as the name indicates, one of the first things people say when visiting from other areas is, "Wow, I didn't know the 'green' in 'Greensboro' was so appropriate!"
Greensboro has plenty of trees and greenways, especially for a city its size. We're within easy driving distance to the beach and to the mountains, the cost of living is not high, and other than its own cultural activities, Greensboro is also close to Raleigh, Durham, and Charlotte. Its central location makes it an even more desirable place to live.
Traffic is not terrible. There is the usual snarl at rush hour but other than that, traffic isn't an issue. Greensboro is home to many colleges and universities (A&T State, Bennett College, Elon University School of Law, Guilford College, Greensboro College, Guilford Technical Community College, and UNC-Greensboro). Additionally, Greensboro is within commuting distance of many more colleges and universities in the surrounding areas.
The people are (mostly) friendly, life comes at a manageable pace, and Greensboro is an overall wonderful place to live. With its long-time, active Newcomer's Club, to the Greensboro Symphony and theater groups, the famous Carolina Theater, and the active downtown and art districts, Greensboro has a little something for everyone. Come see![read more...]

| Living in Greesnsoro - 12/29/2010
I have lived in Greensboro for 5 years. It seems like a nice place for a family. The downtown area is nice but be careful after 10pm. Single life okay for ages 20 to 30 but not good for the above 35 group. Nothing much to do in Greesboro but you can access other places easily, Beaches, Mountains etc.[read more...]

| It is what you make of it - 6/13/2010
Greensboro is what you make of it, I've lived here for most of my life. It's not the most exciting to place to live but there are things to do here. The downtown area is nice and clean and trust me compared to the surrounding cities in NC, is pretty vibrant. The job climate here isn't great at all but I'm sure it'll improve, though I plan on living this city very soon. If you're raising a family then Greensboro is a great city to live in, for a person in their 20s or out of college, it's not the best city to live in. It is a diverse area, the people are friendly but there seems to be a resistance to Greensboro expanding and becoming the major city it truly can become.
The thing is this isn't a major city, people who move here from larger cities will of course think Greensboro sucks. If they're coming from a smaller city then Greensboro is exciting. Like I said before Downtown is a nice, clean area with music and arts, there are quite a few clubs here to go to and theaters. There are the Grasshopper baseball games which are played in a very nice ballpark, the ACC and NCAA tournaments are played in the Coliseum. NC A&T's homecoming is a pretty big event and tourist attraction, there are quite a few concerts and shows that happen here too.
We have a PGA tour golf tournament, the Chrysler Classics. There's a rich history here and we have some museums and quite a few colleges. If you have to live here coming from a bigger city, just be more creative in how you decide to spend your leisure time. [read more...]

| Escape from G'boro - 10/27/2009
Up until recently, I lived in Greensboro for several years, and could not be happier since moving. I would have left sooner had my company not kept me there. This is no place to live if you want to do anything other than go to work and go home. There is literally nothing to do here outside of a few places to hang out in the downtown (which gets old quickly).
This town is sprawling, which is a big part of the problem with Greensboro IMO. You have to drive EVERYWHERE, it often seems like a maze of endless strip malls and chain restaurants. I will say I think downtown Greensboro has potential in terms of revitalizing the city's image and economy, but it seems an apathetic notion as the population and economic interests are dispersed over such a huge geographic area.
On the other hand, this just might be a good place for a young couple starting a family. It is cheap to live here, and there is no shortage of very affordable housing. So, if you're on a tight budget, and looking to raise a family in an isolated suburban twilight zone, Greensboro might be the place for you.

i've had asthma and allergies almost all my life as do my 2 children. My mother has it as well but it didn't affect her until years after moving to greensboro. i've read that greensboro, nc is not a good place to live for allergy/asthma sufferers. i believe it. Apart from that, i love Greensboro - it's a great place to raise kids and the downtown is really growing.[read more...]

| this is by far the worst place I've lived. - 4/5/2009
This has been one of the worst mistakes I've made, if you disregard my personal life. I hate Greensboro, and for that matter am unimpressed and uninspired by North Carolina, in general. Every day I ask myself "what am I doing here?"
7 months, and I haven't come up with any other answer, other than "my nephews and nieces are fun"
North Carolina is cheaper for a reason.

| friendly - 3/29/2009
I have lived in Greensboro for a little over three years now. It's surprisingly diverse with a range of ethnic food markets and ethnicity in general. The city is a fairly green one. It houses one of the most environmentally friendly hotels in the US (the Proximity). The people are friendly and down to earth. This is a great place to send your kid off to college or raise a family. The only downside to this is that there isn't as much nightlife as there would be in larger cities. Most stores are closed my 10:00 PM and the bars are closed at 2:00AM. The downtown area is small, but fun. It is a very arts friendly place as well.[read more...]

| Not a bad town - 12/13/2008
Like most cities, it depends on where you live in Greensboro in terms of housing, crime, and so forth. Generally, the price of housing is reasonable when compared to other similar sized cities. As to the climate, the best time is the Fall and Spring. Summers can be humid and hot to the point of being brutal. Winters usually have regular welcome breaks from the cold. This year November and early December have been much colder than normal with long periods of incessant cold drizzling rain like it used to be when I was a kid here in the 60's. I hope it doesn't continue or I will be looking for a new place to live.
I am retired now and really can’t honestly address in detail the employment situation. However, as NC has essentially lost most of the furniture industry, the tobacco program and the textile industry, this state is still undergoing a transition period in its economy.
Greensboro is large enough to have most anything you want in terms of recreation, shopping and dining at least from the standpoint of a person my age (58) and one who has never lived in a really large city. Beaches are less than 4 hours away as are the mountains. Generally, it is not a bad town.

| City trying to decide if ity wants to be a small t - 8/12/2008
Greensboro seems to be undecided if it wants to stay a small town or grow to have something to offer. It is green and has some park/recreation areas. It is very diverse in culture as well. Driving on I85, you would pass right by it, there is nothing to let you know that you are in/near or passing Greensboro.... only 1 exit has any restaurants or stores to show that you are near (in effect you are @ 5 miles from downtown at that point) not even a gas station.
The east side and directly south of downtown leave a lot to be desired. The city is moostly north and east of I85, but also west and other areas due to NC forced anexing you into the city mainly for tax income. Schools are fair, nothing special , some have the usual temporary trailers for students. The need something to set them apart from Charlotte and Raleigh before Greensboro will have it's own draw, I do not hate it here but given the chance again I would have choosen Raleigh or Charlotte, this area is too small town. It is growning and someday may come into it's own but for now it is as someone else said, boring.[read more...]

| Why do you think they call it "GreensBORING?" - 7/18/2008
I lived there for a while and never realized just how so much nothing goes on in one place. If your idea of a good time is driving everywhere and seeing strip mall after strip mall, then this is ur place. I will admit that there are lots of natural parks and trees but for big city excitement you might be better off going somewhere else. It is almost as if time has stood still in this city. If you have a family and want to live in the middle of now where, then this is the place to be. Personally, I would prefer Raleigh, NC. At least it feels more city like.[read more...]
