"Hot, Buggy and Ugly"

Hot, Buggy and Ugly - 10/25/2006

Sugar Land, TX

The title pretty much sums it up. I moved here 3 years ago from a city of equal size in GA and this place is unbelievably hot and humid (even compared to GA). The mosquitos, which are out almost year round, are the biggest I've ever seen. They could easily cover a person's fingernail in width. Sugar Land, and most of the area is flat with no tall trees except what may have been planted by landscape designers. I have heard that Sugar Land has more master planned communities than any other city, which is okay as long as you don't mind cheap, unimaginative and repetitive achitecture, small yards and 6 ft wooden fences delineating each persons property. Oh, don't tread foot on that property or you might get shot. I'm not saying that everyone in TX is gun happy but I have met more than my fair share of them and I live in a neighborhood of nice, brick, 3000 sq ft houses. Now, I like to hunt on occasion but I'm talking assault rifles and people having to "clear" (like a SWAT Team) their house when they hear the dog bark at night. I'M NOT KIDDING!! Some of these people are nuts!! Texans, themselves, are a very welcoming group of people if you will buy into their belief that Texas should be its own country and no other people or states are worthy of acknowledgement.

The good stuff...The school systems are good, crime is low and the cost of housing is cheap.(that's only becuase the houses are built shoddily).

Overall, I'll leave as soon as the opportunity presents itself...and won't look back!

I lived in the Sugarland area for about 13 yrs. I was glad I left! It is typical "urban sprawl"! The traffic is horrible. The crime is high. ( I don't know where Sperling got it's crime rate from). It is no place to raise children. I lived there when it was a small town. I ended up having to leave. I wanted a more wholesome environement, for my son. It's part of Houston, and lost all it's identity.

Best place to live and raise family - 9/13/2012

I am not sure why anyone who has lived in Sugar Land would have anything bad to say. I have been here since 1986. It is close to Houston, but even with all its growth, still has that hometown feel. I raised four children here as a single mom. Wonderful schools, lots of friends, and the most welcoming church ever. The police are great and work hard to keep crime low. You can access the freeway in 10 minutes, from just about any area of Houston. I would also urge you to look at the real statistics...people who have lived here and have given the true test of time. And take your kids to a baseball game at the new Sugar Land Skeeters stadium. They will love it. We all get use the the weather here, just like those who live in the northern states get used to cold and icy weather. It's a marvelous place, and you get out of it what you put into it![read more...]

Sugar Land is a very nice suburb city in a booming - 6/21/2010

I can't say much bad about Sugar Land aside from the summer heat (which is everywhere in Texas, even the much-lauded Austin). It's very convenient to everything, and most of the public schools are great. Lots of master-planned communities, which are nice for families. This year, Fort Bend county was named as the "#1 place to get ahead" because of its job opportunities and growing population and income levels. Sugar Land is the largest city in Fort Bend. The unincorporated areas just outside of Sugar Land that have Richmond addresses are very nice as well. As far as all of the conspiracy theory comments below on the city not reporting all of the crime or trying to hide it -- just NOT true. Sugar Land is MUCH safer than most of the rest of the Houston metro. Do you honestly think they could hide this from the FBI? If little ol' Sugar Land could hide it, then I guess the much more powerful NYC and Los Angeles could be doing it too. Heck, then Austin is probably doing it too, among other negatives they are keeping hidden to attract more transfers.[read more...]

Not A Good City - 1/18/2010

For anyone considering moving to Sugar Land, TX, visist here several times watch the news here and get reports on crime from police department. Sugar Land has high crime, alot of foreigners, alot of traffic, really not that friendly, the homes are cheap because they are built cheap, the HOAs suck, you have no land, you pay for every service, if you go into the stores everything is in both english and spanish so get use to feel like you're living in mexico. Overall it isn't that safe of a city and not a good place to raise a family, I have lived all over the country and this is the worst city and state I have lived in.[read more...]

Not As Safe As Has Been Stated - 1/15/2010

Moved here with my wife and son because of a job opportunity and now regretting it bigtime. Sugar Land is part of the Houston metro and the entire area just plain sucks. There are way too many people, the traffic is some of the worse I have ever seen, there are too many people from different countries which makes you feel like you're not even living in America at times. One of the biggest reasons not to move here besides the illegal mexicans, is because of the amount of crime here. Everyday it is on the news stations, in the paper, you hear the police sirens, Houston ( and the metro area in general) does not have a particular "bad" section, it is ALL over. If you are planning on moving here, seriously rethink it and consider other places first. They try to hype the area hee as safe and family oriented but it is not.[read more...]

Atmosphere of the past in Todays world - 7/14/2009

In my opinion almost all circumstances and experiences depend on one's lifestyle, habits, interests. My family and I, live a simple but happy and tranquil life. Texas is a wonderful place and Sugar Land tops it all! The people are friendly, and well mannered. Peaceful and calm like what we hear life used to be in the 50s, yet modern and recent in view. It is like the past in todays time.[read more...]

Mixed Reviews - 7/23/2008

The pros: if you want your kids to grow up in an ethnically diverse community in which education is highly valued, Sugar Land is tops. The schools are among the best in Texas. Ethnic groups seem to congregate in their own subdivisions, so the mix isn't always easy to tell just walking around the block. People aren't the typical "Texas friendly." I am reminded very much of New England as far as the people being welcoming to newcomers. You have to "prove" yourself in order to be accepted. As a bedroom community to Houston, it has much better air and water than the big city. Traffic is a problem and getting worse. No way to compare it to the big cities back east..., the Houston area just has a lot of traffic but it isn't really bad. There is a lot of economic "segregation." The very rich stick to themselves and do not mix with the (shrinking) middle class. The financially challenged of the economic spectrum are not welcomed in most circles. The climate is a big problem for many. Summers are unbearable to many. Winters are not cold. Humidity is a year round issue. If you are looking for something to do, look elsewhere. Live theater exists in Houston, but not in abundance. In Sugar Land, it is virtually non-existent. If I have to live here for the rest of my life, it isn't bad. But it is not my first choice. crime in sugarland - 8/10/2007

we lived in Sugar Land for two years. At first it was great, after a while we realized it just was not that safe. Several as in over 7 home invasion robberies in our subdivision. We had been told that crime stats are not being documented to the FBI. to appear that Sugar Land was safer than it actually is. Just a heads up. If you move to a new community you might want to talk to as many neighbors as you can., not just the police or constable.[read more...]

Info on Sugar Land - 9/20/2006

I live in Sugar Land, Technically born and raised. I never lived in Houston for a minute but that effect me everyday. I am 21 years old and am ready to leave. Granted people are friendly here and many are open minded, and it looks like a really nice place to live. It is beautiful, spacious and all they talk about. But personally being literally borderline Houston is horrible. I would not recommend sugar land to anyone unless you plan to live deep in the heart of sugar land, and if your work is in the neighborhood, and there is a school down the street, and if you can get all your shopping done in that same street (not likely). The traffic here is crazy and hectic. Unless I leave early in the morning for school (downtown) at 6:15 in the morning, I will not make it until close to 7:15. The average time it takes me to get anywhere even in sugar land to sugar land is about 30- 45 minutes without traffic. The freeway is shared by all, so casually everyone is on it, and there is so much construction being done on the freeways and highways in Sugar land that it is unbearable. People on the freeway are absolutely the worst! It is so polluted that people get allergies when they come to Houston. Most of my family has allergies; my brother and I are the only lucky ones who don’t. And about taking kids to the park, as anywhere else, I would say keep an open for them and don’t let them out of your sight. I hate taking my younger sister to the grocery store for fear of her getting picked up by some stranger. If you are conservative and care for the well being of your son, I would say the school has a great education system, usually the fort bend groups and schools in sugar land are ok, like but my brother got messed up because he was in the wrong crowd. Teachers are very much needed in Fort Bend actually. They say there are 18 kids per teacher, but not in the high schools and middle schools or elementary schools I attended in sugar land. I would say over 20 if you're lucky and sometimes even over 30 if you are really unlucky. Most people who attend the fort bend schools are actually living in the Houston zones. Houston is awful and because so many people shop in sugar land they just go there and hang out. The place is full of teenagers, young adults and many elderly people. The weather here is horrible. It is hot for almost 7 months of the year. The summers are horrible. People can’t go outside for a minute. Then if we're lucky, the fall breeze may last a month. And th[read more...]

About the City - 9/4/2006

Having lived in Sugar Land for about 5 years, I would have to say that yes, it is a good place to live in general. However, one thing that I did not like about it was the fact that it was growing like mad. Fort Bend County is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation (or at least it was, last time I looked). Lots of new housing areas are going up and many people moving in. The School district is good, but they are having a hard time keeping up with all the growth. I would say to the person before who was looking for info that it would be pretty likely to find a job with the district. Proximity to Houston is a good thing, however, most if not all things you could need are there in town. In my time there, I didn't see much crime, though I imagine with the closeness to town, it is there. As most of the town is within 2-5 miles of a major river (the Brazos), there are times when it does flood (mostly when a tropical storm or hurricane comes near, but it doesn't happen that often), however, it is contained pretty well. You may have some localized flooding when it rains really hard and long, but it is dissipitated rapidly. Lots of different churches, and a great amount of diversity in the city. Over all, and in conclusion, I would say that Sugar Land is a good place to raise a family.[read more...]

I haven't lived in Sugar Land, but I used to know some people who lived there. It is VERY nice and VERY expensive. You may want to look into Stafford, TX or Katy, TX. They are a little more affordable. Also the Cypress area at the NW of Houston is pretty good. Another website you may want to check out is www.city-data.com. It has a lot of information like population breakdown (race, gender, age, income, etc.) and crime statistics.[read more...]

Would like information - 7/24/2006

I have read so much about Sugar Land my curiousty is getting the best of me. Money magazine, internet articles, best places for families book....and everything makes this place sound unreal. Would anyone recommend Sugar Land to a single mother? What about to an African-American female? Are people friendly to all? I know it is highly conservative, but that doesn't bother me. I am a hard-working teacher who wants to be able to buy a nice home, in a quiet community with nice parks to take my son to play. Any info, please let me know. I hear a lot of bad about Houston, how does the crime in Houston affect Sugar Land? Does Sugar Land have Houston's flooding problems? Are there quality, fairly inexpensive day care facilities? How difficult or easy is it to get a teaching position in Fort Bend County? Is Sugar Land a good place to start a business (day care)? Are there lots of friendly churches (multi-cultural)? I know I am asking a lot, but I want to get all the information I can, so even if someone can direct me to a good web-site, I would greatly appreciate it.[read more...]

Ft Bend Co is one of the best places live outside of Houston Texas Some of the reasons: 1. Very strict H.O.A. policy 2. Moderate to High Income Home owners 3. Sugar Land has very strong politcal relationship in Washington D.C. 4. Family orientated shopping, eating out, and many other family activities 5. Crime has increased since 1994 6.
