we live on a great street - new and old families, folks that have been here a while. everyone looks out for everyone else. close to main street - lots of restaurants, coffee shops. the only town that has a "downtown" in the suberbs besides rochester hills - at least that i know of.

| Royal Oak, Michigan - 11/16/2008
I love Royal Oak most for it's diversity and sense of community. Oakland County, Michigan, and "the Mitt", for that matter, are beautiful areas with some of the prettiest green space in the country. Unfortunately the auto industry is tanking and many have left Michigan for warmer climates and better opportunities. My home is worth less than half I currently owe on it. Jobs are difficult, if not impossible to come by now. As much as I love my town, I would not recommend relocating here.[read more...]

| Culture and Things to Do - 9/2/2008
Sometimes you have to look hard but there are cultural things to do in this city. In the past year, I have found: a. A French-language group meeting at a local bookstore, b. A writer's group, c. A book club, d. A world-class art library (in the next city).
So, for the patient, there are some rewards.[read more...]

| Royal Oak - 2/24/2008
Royal Oak is very nice. Royal Oak is a good place to raise a family or for a
young professional. Royal Oak has many great rests and shops/ stores.
Royal Oak has a lot of trees and has a very low crime rate. The very few negatives are Michigan winters can be rough and economy in Royal Oak is rough
unless you have a professional or skilled trade, but than true is with many
areas.[read more...]

| Downtown Royal Oak - 10/27/2007
My husband & I love living in downtown Royal Oak. His office is less than a half a mile away, so he walks most of the time. We live within walking distance to gyms, shops, restaurants, post office, farmers market, library, yoga studio and even a community college. It is a great place to live most of the time. We would like to see more "regular" retail clothing and home stores. Most of the shops here are boutique style shops. Royal Oak attracts a lot of people from nearby cities looking for a cool place to go out at night or on the weekend. We would also like to see improvement in safety for pedestrians since the area is attracting more and more people who want a walkable community.[read more...]

| High Taxes ? Poor Schools ? - responce to 'Jessica - 10/9/2007
Not sure where Jessica gets her 'high taxes' information - but for the area - only neighboring Berkley's total taxes are lower (their city tax is actually higher) - Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Ferndale, Birmingham are all significantly higher - as is both Madison Hts., Hazel Park, Oak Park & Clawson. This info. is available via Oakland County website.
As for school performance and infrastructure improvements - Royal Oak is headed in the right direction as test scores and building improvements indicate. I wish people who complain would at least have their facts straight.[read more...]

Our city has over 50 parks, typically all are within walking distance of

| Great place to live - 7/14/2007
Royal Oak is a wonderful place with friendly people, beautiful neighborhoods, and a vibrant downtown with lots of restaraunts, bars, and entertainment.
It is close enough to Detroit to experience Big City perks like professional spots and world class entertainment, but far enough away to feel an escape from traffic and congestion.
My experience with the city services has been positive, and the city is very safe. The local farmers market provides fresh produce and a nice cultural aspect. There are aslo a variety of unique stores, entertainment venues, and marketplaces that are famous throughout metro-Detroit.

| High Taxes, Poor Education - 5/10/2007
I have lived in Royal Oak my entire life and I am sad to see what it has become. I am a late twenty-something mother of two with a college education who finds Royal Oak to be lacking in so many ways. The property taxes are ridiculous, the downtown area is not family friendly and is expensive to patronize. The schools are continuing a downhill slide to substandard education and are unsafe.
We are looking into moving out of the Metro-Detroit Area.[read more...]

| Royal Oak is one happening city - 2/4/2006
Sure they're messing up the archetecture of the city with all the mega-condo's they're building here, but if you have to live in metro Detroit you won't find a nicer area. Plenty of bars, and restaurants, and galleries, still has the nice homey neighborhoods, the schools have gone downhill, but that's because every yokel that gets a job has to move out to 123 mile rd. But the area here between Ferndale and Birmingham off Woodward is the best in the State if you enjoy music, food, and art. only problem is it's still freezing in the winter.[read more...]
