| Land of opportunities BUT.... - 10/11/2011
Like the title says, the Rockville, MD area is filled with opportunities. But if you don't have a pretty high standing job then I hope you have a rich uncle. I may be exaggerating a bit but i'm just trying to emphasize just how expensive the standard of living is. Owning a house or just renting an apartment is depressing being the amount you pay. The price you pay for a house here, you can buy two houses just two states away.
I will say that it is quite a nice place here and the surrounding areas such as Gaithersburg and Germantown are pretty nice as well. DC is not too far away and has many exhibits and tourists spots to explore.
Traffic is pretty horrible. I can't really sugar coat it or deceive anyone into thinking it's anything but horrible. It does surprise me though that car insurance isn't that expensive.
The education system is one of the top in the country. Sometimes it ranks at least top 3 in the US.
Crime isn't really an issue but you'll have a few hoodlums that trickle out from DC or Baltimore which are the places that are filled with their problems.
But bottom line is that Rockville offers a nice amount of opportunities and if you're used to paying high amounts in rent or mortgage then perhaps Rockville shoudn't be a problem. [read more...]

| City Of Rockville - 1/5/2010
Rockville has been my city since 1994, it's a perfect place to start a family, rise a family or even to retire here. First thing that attracts me to this city is they have good educational system. All my 3 boys starts and finish High School in one of the best high school nationwide ( Wooton High School).Rockville is small city, but, we have almost everything in our neighborhood,we have different Research Facilities here, We have a Community college, Private Universities, John Hopkins Healthcare,Hospitals, exclusive schools, good restaurant, shopping mall and Outlet is just one hour away. Crime is not high, compared to other cities, where l live is busy and people are very educated and everybody just mine their own business, but also a friendly and concerned citizen. Standard of living is quite expensive, if you earn $85,000.00 a year, you can live in a nice Townhome or Condo.Rockville is 30mins. away from the White House where President Barack and Michelle Obama lives.[read more...]

| Lots to do, art, sport, mind - 7/19/2008
Rockville/Gaithersburg area has water for kayaking, lots of swimming and tennis clubs, free tennis at high school courts, lots of bike trail access and interesting paths along Potomac Canal Path. Very diversified because of proximity to DC, DC's overflow of culture from all over the States and world.
There are so many exhibitions by theater groups, fairs, crafts fairs, dog events i.e. field trials of labradors, you can't decide which to go to on a weekend. Also, Rockville is 1/2 hour drive from DC, loaded with museums.
Because of the liquor laws in Montgomery County the best restaurants are not here but the options are plenty within 1/2 hour drive. Bethesda is next door to Rockville and has a better selection of restaurants.

| Entrepreneurship - 7/18/2008
There are many attempts to develop entrepreneurship in the region. For example, the Rockville Innovation Center, an incubator for science and technology startups as well as international firms, has provided avenues for increased employment potential and the start of a long-term goal to make Rockville a hotbed of entrepreneurship in this region.[read more...]

| A Happy Resident - 9/11/2007
I have been living in Rockville, Maryland for the pass seven years. While traffic can be a problem (which is indicative of the entire Washington DC-Baltimore Metropolitan Region), the school system is great along with a plethora of various job opportunities in and around Rockville. However, please note that cost of living is high with average housing prices hovering around $500,000 and rental units which can be as high as $2500 a month if not higher.[read more...]

| A friendly, picturesque suburb of Washington DC - 6/9/2007
I have lived in Rockville for four years now and feel very lucky to have found a home here. This town has a very pretty historic district rich in Civil War history. Although most of the larger historic homes have been purchased by lawyers and converted into law offices, there remain a few older homes occupied by generations of families, some of whom trace their roots back to slaves brought into the state of Maryland.
Rockville's city government proudly sponsors street festivals, outdoor musical events and hometown holidays that draw residents from neighboring areas. This is a family-friendly town with schools that are part of the highly rated Montgomery County Public School system. For higher ed, Johns Hopkins University has a Rockville campus and the University of Maryland is a 20-minute drive away.
The historic downtown neighborhood (where I live) is an enclave with a small town feel to it, and yet not without modern conveniences. Our recently completed "Rockville Town Square" is a mixed-use development that is now home to about 16 new restaurants, a technologically modern library, an arts center, boutiques, pedestrian friendly avenues, sidewalk cafes (and yes, the ubiquitous Starbucks). Above the commercial establishments are some 600 new condominiums with plush interiors and sticker-shock prices.
Ay, there's the rub. Being a suburb of DC, Rockville's home prices are sadly beyond the reach of many of the people who work here. There is a county program that encourages builders and developers to participate in providing moderately priced dwelling units, but the inventory of such units is small and getting to own one is much like winning the lottery.[read more...]

| Miss it at Times! - 4/11/2007
We lived in Rockville, Md in the 80's and I do miss it at times. We lived on Bowie Rd. right off of Rockville Pike. There were at least 15 different types of ethnic restaurants on Rockville Pike. There was always a happy hour with lots of free appetizers. I don't miss the winters because it was dreary and cold plus I don't drive that well on snow.(from SoCal) Plus the humidity in the summers was downright oppressive. Lots of employment in Montgomery County. If you don't mind commuting on the Metro, there's even more work in DC. Forget about parking downtown, it's too expensive. I miss access to the Smithsonian Museums, concerts downtown, and the distinctive parts of DC like Georgetown and Dupont Circle.[read more...]

| Great job opportunities, terrible traffic, high co - 7/12/2006
My husband and I moved here after graduate school when we found jobs here. The economy here is very good, and there seem to be many job opportunities. However, the cost of real estate is very high. Housing prices have double or tripled in the last five years. We're from the midwest, where we could buy a mansion for the price of a small bungalow here. Also, things here just seem older and less well-cared for than what we're used to. There are great cultural attractions like the Smithsonian museums, but things like upscale shopping malls or interesting neighborhoods just seem a little shabby around the edges all through the region.[read more...]

| It just gets worse - 6/25/2006
When I moved to Rockville 16 years ago, it was relatively easy to get around. Since then, the population has grown, and surrounding areas have been in development BOOM. Consequently, traffic is increased to the point where you sometimes have to wait several traffic light cycles to pass through an intersection.
Traffic lights are not timed well, so most of them are turning red just as the next byte of traffic reaches the intersection.
Because arterial streets are so slow and backed up, people are trying to find alternate routes, and they tend to cut through neighborhood streets. The answer has been to put increasing numbers of speed bumps on residential streets.
On the plus side, Rockville has been working hard to create a fine network of bicycle trails and increase pedestrian accessibility. The city is actively encouraging pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Access to Washington DC as well as other suburban Washington areas via a Metro (subway) station in town center is good. There are two bus systems serving the city and surrounding areas - The Washinton DC bus system and the Montgomery Co. Ride-on system. They provide service between the metro staton and Rockville neighborhoods, as well as to places of work, hospitals, city offices, and shopping areas.
Biggest problem is the intense increase in development around old, inadequate streets and roadways. This is probably a problem in every city in America that is seeing a burst of growth and development.[read more...]
