According to the 2006 FBI stats, Charleston has just an average crime rate for a city over 100,000 people (.89% violent crime and 4% violent crime.) Of the top 260 cities in the country, Charleston is #78 on worst violent crime and #156 on worst property crime. That's not bad. Not great, but not bad.

St. Louis, the worst overall, had a 2.58% violent crime rate and 11.75% property crime rate. That's BAD.

Looks like it's 2.3 times national average. That may vary depending on the statistics and mathematics you are using.
