"Weather here is great!"

Weather here is great! - 9/23/2008

Do not listen to the Californian. Sparks has all 4 seasons. It does snow here but the snow is very wet and melts quickly and it does not snow six months out of the year. We typically get one heavy snow a year and the rest are light dustings that melt the same day. The other 3 seasons are great. We do not get a lot of rain here but your weekend is never dampened from the rain. It is the high desert so the climate is very dry, but the up side is there's hardly any insects to run your day. Another big factor is there is rarely any severe weather here. Coming from Kansas that is a big relief.

LOVE it! Fifth generation Reno/Sparks native. Paternal great grandparents born and raised in Reno. Sparks has an old fashioned home town feeling. I love Sparks! Great Police Force, wonderful sense of community.[read more...]

Acclimate to the Climate - 4/22/2008

Moving here from Atlanta has been a tough transition. Never thought I'd miss humidity, but we sure do. Also, if you like rain, this isn't the place for you. People from here, love it here. The high desert just isn't for us.[read more...]

1st time homebuyer : Sparks-Spanish Springs area - 3/21/2007

My husband and I purchased our first home a year ago in a section of Sparks that is almost completely new construction. We wanted to look at well-constructed buildings and a well-planned city, and that's what we got. The downside is that we are having to drive 30 minutes west or southwest to get to the base of the Sierra Nevada mtns for recreation. The hills on the east side here are seriously too ugly to hike or bike in- sagebrush can't even grow in them. We have found a couple of canyons to the south and east that are nice (one with a large population of wild horses and the other very wooded). I can't comment on the schools, as we have no children, but our neighbors say the district is very good. We never have to shovel, but watering our garden nearly year round is costly. The air is pretty good quality for a large city (Reno) which is a huge plus. The airport is located right smack in the center of Reno, and the airplane noise is a terrible annoyance in basically ALL areas of Reno and Sparks; to escape it try Caughlin Ranch or Verdi next door. The only other major con is this: Northern Nevada has a lot of smokers, gamblers, alcoholics and casino workers mixed in with the influx of the generally more eco-concious Californians. If you are considering a move to N. Nevada, please remember that it is more important than you might at first realize to be close to a living ecosystem in such a dry climate. We basically have two seasons- cold and sunny, and hot and sunny, and vulture-lovin' dry.[read more...]

Sparks, NV Living - 9/8/2006

My husband and I moved from Louisiana, and although the weather is a lot better here in Nevada, the cost of living is outrageous. I am sure it is comparable or even cheaper than living on the East coast; however, we were shocked upon being transferred here from the South. The housing market has gone down since we first arrived, but it is still pricey. The cost to live in a new 1800 square foot house is around $365,000. The schools are also extremely over crowded. Our daughter is in the 5th grade and she is one of 37 kids in her class. The standardized testing scores for this area are also pretty low. On a good note, you will thouroughly enjoy the great weather here. The summers can be hot during the day, but the nights are always wonderful. The scenery is like none I have ever seen. You are only 40 minutes from Tahoe, which is probably one of the most beautiful places in the U.S.[read more...]

Nice but very high. - 9/5/2006

My wife and I have lived in Sparks Nevada for a little over three years, while it is a nice place to live, the cost of living is pricing people right out of the city. We are still trying to understand why a house here averages over three hundred thousand dollars, what are people paying for, high desert sand and sage brush, nothing more, makes no sense.[read more...]

Climate - 7/9/2006

Dead housing market - 6/16/2006

Lobo's Life - 3/10/2006

I stumbled into a small, inexpensive community called Rainbow Bend in Storey County, Nevada on the Truckee River just across from Sparks. The homes are small & modest, but we have a clubhouse with an indoor pool, sauna, hot tub, Library, meeting rooms, 24 hour security patrol and front yard mowing. The bill is $75 per month. RV parking in fenced & patrolled yard for $10.00 a month. Water, Sewer, Trash removal, roads and TV service for another $95 per month. High Speed Internet with WIFI is another $25. I did a reverse mortgage so there are no house payments except for $112 per month taxes and another $120 for fire & flood. We are about 5 freeway miles from major casinos with great chow at unbeatable prices + entertainment if your heart can stand it. It is less than an hour to Lake Tahoe and ski resorts. A ton of golf courses in the Reno-Sparks area. An hour to NAS Fallon. I like it[read more...]
