Great place to live - 12/5/2008

Spartanburg, SC

Spartanburg is a metro area of almost 300,000 people. It has over 2% of all investment from outside the U.S. It has healthcare that most cities of one million or more can only dream of. It is also a top 25 educational center in the U.S. 6 collages along with of the best public school systems anywhere. The S.C. school for the deaf and blind along with schools for the disabled such as The Charles Lea center are in the area. Cost of living is low. It sits at the crossroads of Interstates I-85 and I-26 and is serviced by 3 or 4 major railroads. Great Co`s like BMW and Milliken research are located here. As is the case with all cities we have the reg. problems. Another major problem here is the inability to annex land into the city. The city limits are where they were 60 or 70 years ago. The urban area is 10 or 15 times larger than what shows on a map. Only55% of the land in the city is taxable this limits what the downtown can do to improve it`s influence. I have lived in several different places including Germany and by far Spartanburg is where I will stay. It is a place you have to get to know instead of what you find at a glance.

Quality of life - 7/30/2010

We live in School Dis. 2 in Spartanburg. Spartanburg metro covers a large area These comments are about Spartanburg as a metro and not about any one spot. Like every place in America in Spartanburg you can stand in a neighborhood that has faded with time and you can find yourself surrounded by multi million dollar homes. There are areas with sprawling million dollar horse farms and areas with a thousand homes packed in a small spot. We love this place. The schools are great and soon the 7th University will open. A great new Med. school. The Med. care available here at Hos. such as Spartanburg Reg. Med.Cen. are world class. More like one finds in an area of 1 or 2 million people instead of 300,000. Cost of living is great. We have learned that 2.5% of all International investment in the U.S. is in Spartanburg. Co.s like BMW only locate in areas that meet all of thier needs along with the needs of thier people. So if you are looking for a great place to live give Spartanburg, S.C. a little time and look at the whole area.[read more...]

Clear up issues - 7/15/2010

One must be very careful when looking at data with regards to Spartanburg and other cities in S.C. because of very tough annexation laws you have to look at a metro area instead of city info. Spartanburg has only 40000 peaple inside the city limits. If the city limits move out one mile the pop. jumps to 186000. Another few miles and very quickly the pop. nears 300000. Income in the city because of the age and demographics shows below the nat`l norms. The metro area rises very quickly. We love living here. The public schools are great and after the Med. school is finished next year we will have 7 of the best collages and univ. in the country. Sptbg, is a top 3 real estate market in the U.S. We have Hospitals that many cities over 500000 people cannot rival. Spartanburg is the one of the centers of international Bus. in the U.S. with approx. 100 international firms here. We like every other place in America have our problem spots but the positives are much greater than the neg. We are ranked as a top 50 place in north Americe to live and we can only move up. We welcome all so come live with us!!![read more...]

I lived in Spartanburg for 2 years and mom om still lives there so I visit every few months. Visited, Got a Job, Relocating - 3/3/2008

I just got off the phone with a 10 year resident of Spartanburg who came from Manhattan and absolutely loves it! I went to Spartanburg for a job interview, stayed at the downtown Marriot- the hotel restaurant is fabulous - and I love all the new development there. The Chapman Cultural Center has just opened downtown with 3 museums inside (Art, History & Science), a neat artsy gift shop, and a beautiful small theater. I did not have time to visit the downtown library but it looks massive. There are 6 colleges in town. I did go to the Cowpens national battlefield and to the Carolina Foothill Artisan Center in Chesnee, both worth the trip. The cost of living is so much less than where I currently live in Florida and they do have Walmart, Starbucks, and Panera - what else does one need?[read more...]

Friendly City - 9/20/2007

I suppose if you have never been to a true large and crime ridden city, straying from the surrounding utopian areas into the dinky little city of Spartanburg might scare the uncultured innocent, but for anyone who actually travels and has seen or lived in true big cities, Spartanburg seems pretty quaint. Vibrant College Community - 8/30/2007

Spartanburg is an energetic college community with an extension of the University of South Carolina which grants 4 year degrees as well as some graduate degrees. Additionally, it is home to two small liberal arts colleges (Wofford College and Converse College) with excellent reputations. The "ARTS" are alive in Spartanburg, particularly with the construction of the Cultural Center slated to open Fall of 2007. The Spartanburg Little Theatre was formed in 1946, Ballet Spartanburg was formed in 1966, the Spartanburg Repertory Company has been in existence for 20 years providing operas, operettas, and musicals, and the Spartanburg Youth Theatre is in its 35th year. Additionally there is the Greater Spartanburg Philharmonic and the Converse Symphany Orchestra which are very professional. The Petrie School of Music is part of Converse College and provides the community with approximately 150 FREE concerts, recitals, performances, etc. throughout the year. There are several art museums, as well as small galleries. For the sports fan, the Carolina Panthers have their summer training camp at Wofford College, and practices are open and free to the public. History abounds in this area dating back to the 1700s and the Revolutionary War. The weather is generally delightful, although maybe a bit warm during the summer, but rarely snows in the winter. But we are only 1 1/2 hours from Asheville, NC which is in the mountains and near to the Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway as well as several ski resorts. I chose to retire here although I knew noone, and have found the community welcoming as well as relatively inexpensive, but rich in culture and easy to get around.[read more...]

What are you trying to do here? - 7/11/2007

What's with this Hub-Bub crap? It's nothing more than a sad attempt at the City trying to be a "cool, hip town" for an art crowd. Art communities aren't created by city government or funded marketed groups like Hub-bub. Art communities are formed by the artists who loathe marketing schemes. Get real Spartanburg - you're trying too to be something you're not. Hub-bub is nothing more than a group of "cliques" - it's all about who you know not what you know. No one wants to see true art for art sake marketed under a cute name or a cute logo.[read more...]

Spartanburg -- Great Place to Live - 7/7/2007

Seems to me everyone ought to live here. Warm, caring people. Great location and climate. Up and coming economy. If you're from a big city....be forwarned. We wave to strangers, and we don't honk. Really! But then I'm biased. I moved here from Beverly Hills to be city manager. A great move![read more...]

Dreadful - 6/7/2007

If you're looking for a very nice climate and a low cost of living, which Spartanburg offers, you have to sacrifice other things. There are some growing areas north and the west of the city that aren't as depressing to live in. Restaurant-wise, you'll find a lot of greasy fast food chains. However, Olive Garden and Hooters recently opened right next to the Golden Corral and the mall. I think all of these restaurants first appeared in the 1980's throughout the rest of the country. The amount of litter along the roads is very prevelent, but not only isolated to Spartanburg, throughout much of the state. The Spartanburg "claim-to-fame" restaurant is called The Beacon. Locals will tell you that people from all over the world come to eat there. The Beacon is just another greasy spoon known for their wait staff's rude behavior. Everything's topped with chili and cheese. Why would people from all over the world want such a thing? And the area that it's located...just don't go around that part of town after the sun goes down. Although it's warm and the sun shines a lot, it always feels like a rainy day when you're in Spartanburg, SC.[read more...]

Wonderful Area - 5/9/2007

Very good housing market, many retiree from the northeast area have moved into our area. Great schools, over 2 billion in scholarship money has been won by our students. Much lower taxes on housing. Variety of restaurants, and not fuel solely by college students. New restaurants coming in monthly. Spartanburg is big on eating out. 5 colleges with a great selection of open to the public events, Converse is known in the music field. Great hospital care is available. Gibbs Cancer Center, Smith Hawkins Sports Medicine Clinic to name a few. Golf courses that are beautiful- Two Country CLubs The figures on this information site don't give an accurate picture of life in Spartanburg. As a resident here I don't experience the crime level the numbers indicate.[read more...]

Spartanburg, a city on the rise. - 4/1/2007

Spartanburg is one of the best cities in South Carolina. Don't let the city's stats on this page fool you. Spartanburg is in the process of restoring its beautiful and historic downtown, centered on Morgan Square. New corporate HQ's and other office buildings are going up left and right, the in-town neighborhoods are springing back to life. Restaurants are clamoring to get downtown to stay ahead of the market. The city is much more than just its small land area. The urban population spreads for miles beyond the city boundaries, and is growing more every day. Spartanburg's leaders are concerned with retaining business and attracting new industries. Spartanburg is the 4th largest economy and couny in SC, and being located at I-85 and I-26, it has become a major manufacturing and distribution point for many companies, including BMW North America and Milliken Corp. Spartanburg County has the highest international investment per capita in the nation. Housing is inexpensive in this city-on-the-rise; so if you want a nice suburban estate in Boiling Springs, a historic home in Hampton Heights, or even a condo downtown- you will have a variety of options from which to choose, and you will be able to do it for a good price. The area is blessed with good schools, great people, and an excellent quality of life.[read more...]

Great place to raise a family - 3/12/2007

We have lived on the east side of Spartanburg for 17 years and it has been a great place to live. While relatively small, it has 4 colleges and offers some culture. There are no traffic jams. District 7 schools are excellent, and my children got a great education. Housing is very reasonable, and the climate is great- 4 seasons with mild winters. People are very friendly.[read more...]
