Like so many negative comments about Merced, CA I have to chime in to say I agree totally that Merced is a disgusting and terrible city AND county to have to be stuck in. It is hard to move away for most people unless they have no ties here at all. Unemployment is at 19.56% and the housing market is in shambles and will get worse for some time, probably at least until 2012 and longer and then it likely will go flat for years. Crime is getting worse and worse in many categories and gangs seem to be unstoppable by local authorities. Graffiti is very common and the roads are almost getting to be for 4 wheel drive vehicles only. They are starting to work on the roads some after 15 years of complete neglect. If you don't need to move here take this as a friendly warning and just don't even waste your time thinking about it.
