Bernardsville, New Jersey is a charming town with population of 7,345 that has a semi-rural and suburban character. Bernardsville is located 35 west of New York City in Somerset County. Bernardsville has a variety of shops, restaurants as well as its own cinema and YMCA and there are 6 outstanding private golf clubs within 5 miles. The New Jersey Transit has 2 express trains in and out of New York Penn Station each day, and the express trip takes 50 minutes. There are several large employers including Verizon, Avaya, Lucent and Chubb, as well as numerous middle market and smaller companies located within 5 to 25 minutes driving time. The median income is $104,000 according to the 2000 census. The Bernardsville public schools are excellent. The borough has its own elementary, middle and high school. Bernardsville High School offers an International Baccalaureate Diploma program and over 18 AP Courses and routinely sends 85+% of its students to competitive colleges and universities, including the Ivy League schools, Stanford, Georgetown, Rutgers, Middlebury, Virginia and Michigan. In 2008, Bernardsville High School will complete a $50 million expansion and renovation project which greatly enhances its attractiveness. In addition, there are a large number of private and parochial middle and high schools in Bernardsville and neighboring towns that include schools that are highly ranked in the state.
The town has a volunteer fire and EMS department. The borough organizes a large selection of athletic teams for youth and adults organized by the borough including football, basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse and tennis.

Bernardsville is governed by a Mayor and a six-member Borough Council. The Mayor of Bernardsville is Lee C. Honecker. Members of the Borough Council are Council President Denis J. Dooley, II, Charlotte Foster, Michael Landau, John McCrossan, Joseph Rossi, Jr. and Mikael Salovaara.
Bernardsville is in the Seventh Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 16th Legislative District. New Jersey's Seventh Congressional District, covering portions of Hunterdon County, Middlesex County, Somerset County and Union County, is represented by Mike Ferguson (R). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).
