I lived in Austin for 15 years. I only lasted that long because I had kids and wanted to raise them close to my hometown in another state. I would recommend that you seriously think twice about moving there. The schools are very poor and the people are very unfriendly. If you were not born and raised there, you will be considered an outsider and basically ostricized from the community. The people are not "welcoming" at all. There is nothing to do there unless you hunt and fish. Even then, you will have to drive North of there to do that because it is the only county in MN without its own natural lake. The main business in town is Hormel. They basically run the town and tell it what to do. It smells horrible in the Summer due to the Hog slaughter at the plant. Not so bad in Winter. It is very hot and humid in the Summer and very cold and snowy in the Winter. The Hospital in town is horrible and I wouldn't take my dog there to have it treated. Stay away!!

When I was growing up it was okay to go out at night.... Now I have one million reasons to say different. There are an extreme amount of immigrants now and hormel has a bus that goes from Texas to Austin if you know what I mean. This town is dead. absolutely nothing to do. If you don't have family here or anywhere near by don't bother looking a this place. Once I leave I will never move back. STAY AWAY if you have kids the high school has fights at least once a week my (junior attending student) cousin says. STAY AWAY if you don't have family because you will have nothing to do. If your white you technically should be able to apply for a town minority scholarship. NEVER live here. Come visit for about 2 days and you will see. If you do don't forget to try to find an open park to hang at. They are all taken up. Some of the parks do have taco car stands parked next to them basically as convenience food.[read more...]
