Warwick, beautiful but getting crowded... - 11/6/2007

I've lived here for 35 years and have seen the population go from 3000 to 30,000 with the taxes rising accordingly. Cows used to outnumber humans and that was great. Unfortunatley for locals the prices have skyrocketed so much that they can no longer keep their farms and most have moved upstate or out of state. Overrun with city folks who love the country but then complain there are not enough sidewalks, cow manure smell disgusting, onion harvest stinks, there aren't enought traffic lights and street lights, roads are too dark, tractors drive too slowly, etc. Cultural scene is growing. Plenty of artists, concerts and plays. 3 wineries and a drive in movie theatre in town. Many restaurants and cafe's. Strong merchant guild and main street shopping scene for gifts and clothes for tourists and weathy newcomers but mom & pop hardware stores and pharmacies are gone or going. Malls and box stores only 20 min. away and the NYC bus is an hour and a half on the express. Tons of McMansions, 12 Bed & Breakfasts, 3 ski areas nearby, hiking, bike trails, apple picking and large undevelopable agricultural flood plain. Plenty of diversity, in thought, politics, and religion. Republicans still win most, not all elections. All in all, I LOVE my town but I'm sad to see it growing so fast to the point where I'm on this site because I need a more rural area.[read more...]
