"Mining based economy"

Mining based economy - 1/13/2008

Elko has an economy that is fairly typical of mining areas, that is, boom and bust. I've lived here for about 16 or so years. It's boomed tremendously twice and busted once since I've been hear. As the dominant employers are gold mines, the economy here follows the price of gold. When it's booming, it's an unbelievably good for job seekers. When it's bad, it's time to get call U-Haul. Right now, it's booming and jobs are very plentiful, especially if you are a skilled worker of any kind.

elko life - 9/1/2009

Spent my teen years in Elko & my parents still live there. It is extremely isolated. Life revolves around the mining industry. The old ranching families that live there are really stuck up, but rightly so due to some of the nomad miners and gambling. There is tons of outdoor activities. It is truely a free place to live. For a teen little to do, life was spent getting chased by the cops. Only 5 big times of year, Rodeo (cowboys come out of the woodwork), Fair (whole town is a cowboys), Basque Festival (a reason to be completely drunk in public and eat chirizo), Cowboy Poetry (more drunk wanna bees who think they're poets) & motorcycle rally (everyone becomes a hard core biker and hangs out at the Horseshoe Strip Bar). There is little traffic except at noon when the high schoolers go to eat. Crime is bad. A lot of drugs and the cops are not good at their jobs..actually they are kinda a joke. There is a lot of good ol boy mentality in the city & county government. Everyone in town HATES the BLM. But gowing up there wans't that bad, we camped alot, hunted, fished, had really good sports program. As an adult I thought about moving back. I just wouldn't live in town and would definately keep my kids busy and away from the cowboy scene. If you break down people will pull over to help. Elko is the best place to live out of all the towns in Nevada by far. The weather is cold cold in the winter, it snows alot, nothing like chicago though. Spring, summer, and fall are completely unpredictable. It could be 90 out and then a snow storm hits. The sage brush smells wonderful, you can see every star in the sky, its quiet, fresh air, water tastes good, and wildlife galore. Speed limit is 25mph everywhere. There's a "super"walmart, kmart, 2 mcdonalds, and several other fast food joints. The casino food is sooooo good and cheap. A breakfast for 4 is maybe $15!! Go see Elko, you'll be surprised![read more...]
