Even though traffic is getting worse as the community grows, it is still a nice rural area to live in. When you live near the end of southern Maryland and bodered by two rivers and the Chesapeake Bay there is not much you can do with the traffic.

too expensive - 11/21/2012

For the area that has little or nothing to do besides bars and eating, this area is too expensive for young couples it families trying to establish themselves. This area caters more to the senior level professionals that are looking for a semi quiet area they can retire to someday. Not ideal for the younger crowd![read more...]

Lexington Park Recreation - 11/9/2009

Located one hour south of the Washington DC Beltway in St Mary's County, Lexington Park is a suburban development adjacent to Naval Air Station, Patuxent River. Roughly defined by a peninsula formed by the confluence of the Patuxent River and the St. Mary's River, the county is laregly rural and agricultural, with the notable exception of the high technology environment of the Naval Air Station, which serves as the Navy's headquarters for development and test of naval aviation programs. With all of the culture and arts offered by the nation's capital within an easy drive, the county itself offers superb water access for kayaking and boating of all forms on the rivers, local creeks and the Chesapeake Bay. Fishing and hunting are the most common outdoor recreational activities. The county also plays host to St. Mary's College, the Maryland State Honors College, which offers year round performing arts events, highlighted by the summer River Concert Series. The River Concert features world class performers in a free, outdoor venue adjacent the St. Mary's River, in a format very much like Wolftrap in Northern Virginia. Cost of living here SUCKS! Utlities are cheap as heck though, im living in a shoe box with all utilities for $960 a month. I have friends in a 1 year lease on an apartment paying $1500 a month for everything. Its the cost of California with as much as to do as the middle of the OCEAN. Too rural, some good places to eat but all and all im ready to leave 2 mins after I got here.[read more...]

too rural for me - 11/5/2006

Life in southern MD is too rural for me. There is one main road in this area, about 5 miles long. On it is Target, Walmart, & Kmart. There's also JC Penney, Sears and Belk but they are not the full dept stores-they only carry a fraction of what these dept stores typically sell. There is also 4-5 grociery stores and about 5-6 fast food choices. There's a handful of restaurants and a movie theater. That's about it...if you can't find what you want on this strech of road, you will have to drive about 30 miles to the next major city/town. Some schools in the area are very poorly rated, having failed the state's "no child left behind act" for 3 years in a row. Other schools in the area are doing better than that. Many children are home schooled. Housing prices have skyrocketed in the past ten years. [read more...]

cost of living - 4/23/2006

a thriving, recession-proof Navy base coupled with suburban commuters from Washington and "smart-growth" social government policies have conspired to put housing costs out of reach for first time single-income home buyers - good news if you want to sell and leave the area - our house will probably net us $150K on an original price of $175K in 1999. And our house is a starter home! Many other homes are selling in the $400-$600K. And forget about owning on the water.[read more...]
