I love Iowa, I love the seasons, the people, the attractions, downtown, even the interstate. I noticed on our last trip down south just how lucky we were up here with driving. A "traffic jam" here may last 30 minutes, for your typical wait, a really bad accident may back stuff up for 45 minutes....I thought that was bad, until we drove down to San Antonio Texas. Oh my... ;) what should have been a 16 hour trip, actually took closer to 20 because of traffic jams in Oklahoma City, Dallas and I410. Im not complaining though....just noting an observation :)

HATE THIS STATE - 3/31/2013

Trash everywhere in Des Moines. Dirty, bleak, and dismal. People here are fat and disgusting. Seems like everyone is old, sick, or dying. The weather is beyond description — horrible most of the year with the exception of a couple months in autumn. For all I care, the entire state can fall into a giant sinkhole and be replaced with a lake.[read more...]

so much to do! - 4/2/2012

You shouldn't have a day where you can't find something to do! Des Moines has a wonderful Civic Center, Wells Fargo Arena, HyVee Hall, Hoyt-Sherman Place, the Science Center, Des Moines Art Center, State Historical Bldg., Botanical Center, State Capitol--and these are just the major sites! There is much local talent from sports to ballet and everything in-beween.Much of it is very inexpensive too! Within an hour's drive there are also many choices from local playhouses to ballgames, auctions, farmer's markets, highschool performances, and music in the squares. Enjoy your time![read more...]

DSM rocks!!! - 11/17/2011

I used to live in park slope in Brooklyn, have been in DSM since 2003now and I love it here I pay in mortgage and for a 2011 vehicle what I paid there in rent for a studio appt. I have a short commute to work. We have clean neighborhoods with trails bike lanes, farmers and winter markets, an excellent civic center, concert arena , and baseball field, excellent restaurants from Thai and Indian to deli and pizza's (fongs where you can get to my knowledge the only crab Rangoon pizza anywhere) in short DES moines has everything you could want packaged in a beautiful little city with big city attractions and small town charm. I Love DES Moines. [read more...]

Iowa - 5/22/2010

Having lived in multiple Major cities in North America (Canada and the U.S.A.)I'd rank Des Moines as a 2, no more than 3 for Culture, Arts, Theatre, Events and Night Life. However it is trying to improve. The Parks are above average, they are paying attention to cyclists, and improving the Green Areas. Fishing, hunting / Outdoor activities are SUB PAR. Public Transportation is a JOKE, the majority of the bus routes shut down after 7:30 AM, return for approx 2 hours in the evening, and then you are on your own. The airport is trying to expand, but it pays to travel 2 hours to another airport and fly. Drugs are a Problem, especially meth, while producers have been targeted with some success, Drugs are a 7.5 out of 10. Police throughout the State have a BAD Rep..........plenty of corruption and bad actors. The Politicians are no better than the cops, they cater to the Insurance, Health Care Providers and Publishing giants/corporate head quarters.......not to mention the casinos. Of the 30 or more cities I have lived, Des Moines ranks in the bottom 5.[read more...]

All my life - 2/24/2009

I've lived in Des Moines all my life and I've been to 46 of our 48 continental states. Des Moines is boring they don't do anything big enough, they try but always fall short. But it's not like every other state(or city)is any better or worse. The big difference would be to have more warmth in the winter,if I ever win the powerball I am moving!!!!! I'd like to see more museums, larger audtoriums, better shopping.Water sports in cleaner water.Saylorville and Red Rock lakes are filthy, people can clean up their yards but that doesn't change whats going on every where else.[read more...]

Native Born in Iowa, but have lived outside my bac - 10/14/2008

I grew up in Iowa in various parts of the state. I tell people "Don't let the down home sound fool you." I have lived outside of Iowa 16 years before moving back. I lived in Utah (both SLC and St. George areas), then moved to Seattle before moving back "home". Iowa may not be the most exciting place to live, but it's easy to live hear.[read more...]

weather - 7/17/2008

The weather in Des Moines is very extream. In the winter it is cold with snow. If the cold does not get you the wind chill is way past what normal people should be exposed to. The summer is the other extream. It is hot and humid. On the way other hand the springs and falls are the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. The plants growing arter the cold that should kill every thind and the change of the plants in the fall is breath taking.[read more...]

My Wonderful Life in IA - 7/9/2008

I was born and raised in Iowa. I am now 31, single with no children. I have a Bachelors Degree (Double Major). Do not judge our citizens by the people that you see at the IA Speedway or the State Fair. We ARE educated, we have a very good education system here. I love my state, and would never want to live anywhere else. I have visited numerous states, and I am very happy to call Iowa my home. Everyone is extremely friendly, strangers greet each other or hold conversations about the weather, the neighborhood, etc. We will invite you into our homes and lives as if we have know you forever. If you bad mouth Iowa you just weren't here long enough to get the feeling of home.... or you just need Jesus. Which reminds me, we have wonderful churches here also. The IA State Fair is one of a kind, and the qualify of life for a family here that wants to raise their children properly, with minimal crime is absolutely wonderful. I know lots of people that don't even lock the doors of their home. IOWA IS GREAT!!! Don't let anyone tell you any different!!![read more...]

Des Moines, Iowa is a wonderful place to raise chi - 6/22/2008

I moved here from Miami, Florida and I have appreciated every moment of the green grass, the too-cold winters and the quality of life that my children and I enjoy which includes not worrying about locking doors, or live in fear that we will be robbed. I found the people here to be much more educated and the public school system far superior to that in Florida. There are 14 students per teacher here in comparison to 20 and higher in Miami. I would like to see more in the way of diversity here and different cultures, but I appreciate the things we do have. I will return home to my family when my children are grown and out of the house, but between now and then, I enjoy every moment of Iowa.[read more...]

Nice city... - 2/25/2008

Des Moines is the capital of the state of Iowa. The metro area has almost 600,000 people. I lived there for about a year, and I also went to college in Ames, IA for 4 years. I really enjoyed living in both cities, and I miss many things of the area. Des Moines is a major center for the insurance industry in the U.S. This city appeals more for family oriented people. Not too much for singles, but most people are nice. The job market is pretty good, especially for those in the insurance business. In 2007, Forbes Magazine named Des Moines the 4th best place for business. The weather of Des Moines nice except during the harsh winter season. I do miss the snow from time to time. Even though I never bought a home in Des Moines, I know that the price of homes is very affordable in comparison to other major cities. Also, the cost of living is good.Overall, Des Moines is a nice city with many opportunities, and it has a lot of potential for economic growth.[read more...]

Very cold. - 9/1/2007

I moved to Iowa in 2006. I was living in Miami,FL. In my opinion, the weather is very cold and it changes a lot. I went to school in Iowa State, but it seems that the weather is affecting me more. For me it is very cold when it is below 10C(50F). Living in temperatures below 0C(32F) can be very frustrating. Des Moines is a nice city, but I'm planning to move back to Florida.
