I was born in Ulysses, Kansas. I moved from there in 1996 to Leavenworth, then in Mission and Kansas City, Ks. If you look close enough at about every town, you can find a good reason to live there, but there are factors that are not consistent in every town and city in this country. As you compare the places that you might want to live, consider the median wages vs. the median home cost. Base your decision relative the income that you will be making and how much money you can save in one place verses another for your own personal retirement. If you are going to make $50K per year, don't expect to be able to buy a nice home in San Francisco with their median home cost of $958,000. Remember, you aren't entitled to a nice home any where. You have the right to pursue the means to buy the home you want. Ulysses, Kansas has some nice things to offer for you recreation as well. To the North about 20 minutes is the Arkansas River. You can innertube and fish for just about any kind of Game Fish in the USA. During the Fall months, Southwest Kansas is rich in Pheasants. For those snake hunters out there, there are plenty of Diamondback Rattlers and Prairie Rattlers to hunt. There is a nice 9 hole golf course on the South side of town, and of course, if you live and work in Ulysses, you communte 2 to 3 miles at the very most each way to work. Ulysses also boasts one of the State's best High School Football teams and has beaten the former best Football program in the State 4 straight seasons. Ulysses sits in the middle of the 2nd Largest Natural Gas Field in the World, which means opportunities for good paying jobs with minimal experience and training. I have a friend who lives there and owns a Print Shop which serves the entire town and surrounding towns. As far as historical attractions go, 10 miles to the South is Wagon Bed Springs, which is a crossing point of the Santa Fe Trail. Ulysses is located in Grant County and named after Ulysses S. Grant. The Grant County Museum includes an exhibit from Old Ulysses that was located in the valley East of Ulysses before a flood decades ago wiped the town out. Nearby is Dodge City about 80 miles to the West where the famous Wyat Earp first became a Sherriff. To the South is Hugoton, the Gas Capital of the World. In September every year, Ulysses hosts the famous Home Products Dinner which has been attended by Presidents of the Past, The Governor of Kansas, and Senators Bob Dole, Pat Roberts, and Sam Brownback. There are Restaurants that range from Mexican Food to Chinese Food including Pizza Hut, Sonic Drive-In, McDonalds, The Peddler's Inn, Shelley's and others. The Ulysses Police Force has aided in disasters as large as 911 when 3 Jumbo Jets were forced to land at the airport in Garden City about a 45 minute drive to the Northeast. Ulysses is about 4 or 5 hours from the front range of the Rocky Mountains. The two largest industries are agricultural and Natural Gas. Ulysses also boasts the largest capacitiy of grain storage in the United States, including several hundred thousand bushels of Popcorn. Near Ulysses is the site of where the Clutter Family was murdered in Holcomb, Kansas. The Movie "In Cold Blood" was made at that house. My Uncle Vernon's girlfriend at the time was the girl that found the family dead the next morning. My Mom lived a few miles from the House that it happened at. Good Employers in Ulysses include the Regional Headquarters for BP, Pioneer Communications, Pioneer Electric, Columbian Chemicals, and one Ethanol Plant that was recently completed with a second one in the works now.

| Weatherford Climate - 1/15/2008
I haven't lived here very long, but I like what I see. This past summer was great. The humidity was there but not overwhelming. There were no days above 100, although, I'm told that this past summer was not normal. It's been a very mild winter, too. It is a nice place to live.[read more...]
