| Racist little town - 12/15/2012
Sadly I was born and raised in Troy Al, and I'm happy to report that I moved away 2 weeks after graduating high school. I still visit family there and growing up I knew racism existed. I stop noticing until I got away from it. Troy is void of any tolerance to change and if you are anything other than white, you have very little chance of being successful there. There is nothing to do, which is probably why the teenage pregnancy and crime rates are so high. I would never choose to live in Troy again. [read more...]

I'm currently living in Alabama; so paying jobs here are sucks. I'm thinking moving to Arizona, but I want to know the paying rate there for Medical Laboratory Technician. | Sorry, Troy sucks. - 8/13/2007
It is very telling, Kenny, that you attack Odysseus personally rather than refute his argument. Whether or not he has a chip on his shoulder, could it be that he is right about Troy?
I came from New Mexico to do a degree at Troy some years ago, and I was there again while travelling to Florida recently, and I'm afraid I agree with Odysseus 100%. Clean air and smiling people do not a good place make. There is precious little to do or see in Troy, and nothing that can't be seen, done, or eaten better elsewhere. I still can't understand what made someone decide to put a university in such a nothing town, and why having a university there hasn't done anything to improve the place. And the university itself is mediocre at best, as any university rankings list will tell you. A look at the crumbling town square will tell you where things are at in Troy. Any town where the thing to do on a Saturday night is to dress up and go to Wal-mart needs help.
Sorry, Kenny; I gotta go with Odysseus on this one (clever nickname, too, btw: the sacking of Troy, ha!). Troy is a hole among holes. Save yourself the disappointment and get on to either Montgomery or Dothan.

| Small town life is great! - 7/16/2007
Did you know that Troy has been named the #1 city for clean air by money.cnn.com?
Inspite of “Odysseus’” weak, rambling rant, Troy can be a nice place to live and raise a family. Obviously, this raving liberal lunatic reflects the typical negative, mean-spirited attitude that can unfortunately be found in any town in America. The majority of Troy residents are positive, friendly, easy-going people that work hard, enjoy life, respect their friends, and value their faith. Sure, every city or town could use improvement, but it helps when people actually provide solutions. Not throw stones in glass houses.
Leave it to someone like “Odysseus” to try to impress his cronies via a cynical pen of cheap shots, foolishness and an ill-fated ideology. Maybe “Odysseus” wasn’t called on in school, maybe he got called names on the playground…oh, poor “Odysseus”! He probably just needs some more government entitlements without working hard...that usually will do the trick for someone like that. Sounds like this miserable chap needs a hug (and by his account, obviously a beer on Sundays!) But, people like him are never happy – because they have no joy in their hearts…just hatred for others. And these are the people that usually end up alone muttering to themselves.
But enough of that...come enjoy the slower pace of small-town life. Plus, a good University, inviting and friendly atmosphere and only approx. 2 1/2 hours from the beautiful white sandy beaches of Florida. See ya'll soon! :)

| A Despicable, Pathetic Little Town - 6/19/2007
Troy, Alabama is one of the most backward places in the continental United States. It is entirely lacking in cultural and social amenities because the apathetic, ignorant, and inbred redneck population doesn't require anything more than fast food joints and a Wal-Mart. Troy tries to present itself as Norman Rockwell-esque, but it is more like something out of the film "Deliverance." The town is oppressed mightily by a conservative ideology that neglects any sort of social development, largely out of a sad nostaglia for a pre-industrial Civil War culture where everyone lived on a cotton farm and pretended they had morals. Among its biggest problems is a ridiculous proliferation of Baptist churches, all of which have a vested interest in keeping the population simple, stupid and fearful of hellfire damnation. There are no sidewalks in the town because even the toddlers and old ladies drive pick-up trucks, and there are no parks, because the people would probably try to hunt there. Apart from a Ruby Tuesday, there is no place even to get a decent meal, and being a dry county, you can't even buy a beer on Sunday. For some reason, the townsfolk refer to these shortcomings and deprivations as "southern charm and hospitality," usually in a sentence replete with ain'ts, y'alls, and various other violations of acceptable speech.
The town is home to Troy University, a third-rate community college masquarading as a state university. This little Republican indoctrination post is run by a bunch of ex-military officers who see it as their primary obligation to give the locals just enough learning to get bad jobs, rather than provide them with real education. They couldn't do this even if they wanted to, of course, as half the so-called "professors" don't have PhD's, and most of the students are just there to buy, cheat, or sleep their way to a degree. Where other universities have classical music ensembles and gender studies courses, Troy has a marching band and a beauty pageant. The favorite pastime at Troy University, when the student stops goose-stepping and square-dancing long enough to think about it, is to blow off his homework and go to the football game, which is a crucial part of school life, since it ensures that the students are always vulgarly entertained and never in danger of learning anything.
I'll stop here, since I am wasting more words in criticizing Troy than its typical inhabitant has in his total vocabulary. I'll conclude by saying that this l[read more...]
