Relocating To Houston (HELP)

I am a single parent from NJ looking to relocate to Houston, TX. Well the suburbs where I can raise my child & experience something different than high priced NJ where your $1 goes nowhere. Any advice on where to live and how to find a job out of state before I move? I currently am a executive assistant at a pharmaceutical company making 36K/year.
