Great place but not the same as it used to be - 11/17/2006 |

| I grew up in SD and enjoyed it.
SD gave me a good foundation for heading out into the world. The diverse culture and variety of vocational and recreational opportunities there helped me to spread my wings elsewhere. And as far as my education was concerned I did great...
We lived all over from North Park to Escondido and because of the public school district's "magnet" system I was able to continue to go to the same schools/be with the same friends no matter where in town we lived. The Spanish magnet and International Baccalaureate programs were GREAT opportunities for me. Has the quality changed as student numbers increased? I'm sure of it. For better or worse? I don't know.
A big thing people overlook is the intellectual hub that is San Diego. As a graduate of UCSD I am biased, but truly, it is one of THE top notch schools in the US. Especially in areas of scientific research and engineering. However, they also excel in areas of art and lit and are always reaching out to the community with amazing opportunities to hear lectures/see performances. They are on the front lines of many medical breakthroughs and I personally was treated by an amazing team of doctors for reconstructive surgery.
That said, I know there is no way that I can go back to living there. I've lived in Michigan for 14 years, own a home on a quiet street and don't need to lock my doors. However, the weather here SUCKS. It's gray, gray, and more gray and winter lasts 6 months. I miss the beaches VERY MUCH and it's the first thing I visit when I go back to see the folks, but there is NO WAY we could afford to live there. Honestly, I don't no how people do it. They all must have huge credit card debts racked up. And the traffic. It was bad when I lived there, listening to the morning radio for traffic reports was the norm, but now people get up and go in to work at ungodly hours to avoid it...that IS bad.
My folks, however, would have it no other way. They make it by on a decent income, but can't afford to vacation or sock-away as much money as they should. Still, my dad loves that everyday he can bike to work, buy cheap and tasty Mexican food, and watch sunsets over the Coronado Bridge - that's hard to beat.
I'm on the lookout now for the 'right fit' in-between these two extremes. A place much like San Diego weather-wise (mild w/ beaches) and attitude-wise (laid back & optimistic), but also like Michigan, affordable with low crime.
Wish me luck
