Red Wing is an excellent place to live, raise a family and retire. We are a place of old fashioned values and morals, but we are in step with the 21 century. History is preserved and appreciated, yet progress is pursued and embraced. Friendly?, ..yes. Shop locally and meet the business owners. Live here and have them for neighbors. We have all the amenities here or near by. Walmart?, ..yes, even a SuperStore. Culture?, a BIG YES!, with the historic Sheldon Theatre at its center. Big city shopping?, ..we're only 50 minutes from the Mall of America. Medical care?, ..we have our own but the Mayo Clinic and Medical Complex is only 45 minutes away in Rochester. Serenity?, ..yes, just step out your door here there then. (Yes we're Swedish, Norwegian and German, with a little Irish thrown in for balance. Balance. That's us. < http://users.kmwb.net/mrankin >

A nice place to raise kids - 11/4/2014

Red Wing is a small town located equidistant between the Twin Cities and Rochester and is situated on the Mississippi river. Much of the big city culture of Minneapolis & St. Paul are reflected in Red Wing. The close proximity to the Rochester Mayo Clinic medical megaplex and the easy going life style make it a desirable location for retirement. Being situated in the midst of an economy fueled mostly by agriculture, the influence of old fashioned family values ere seen and felt. City services are excellent. Educational opportunities are abundant and top quality. It is just a nice, all 'round place to live.

Very stagnant town - 8/14/2013

Red Wing is a pretty town along the river. It does have some things outsiders need to be aware of if you take the plunge. The town is OLD, as in the citizens. If you're looking for a 20-30 year old youthful vibe you will find nothing like that in in Red Wing. Sure there is the Sheridan theater, a movie theater, that's your culture. The mall, if you can call it that, has about a dozen stores. It's pretty sad. And finally, the jobs...no jobs. As the manufacturing has dried up in Red Wing so have jobs. No more Jostons, Pirelli, Tannery, even Red Wing shoe has had some tough times. I'm sure Wal-Mart is hiring but hard to raise a family on that. If you are a skilled worker plan on commuting an hour north everyday for a real job. If you don't buy any of this just look at Red Wings population growth over the past few years/decade. They have gained next to nothing in new residents. It's a great place to visit or maybe retire in but you don't want to live there.

Nice little town - 5/9/2008

It's a very nice town on the Missippi but too cold in winter---hot & humid in summer but a great spring & fall. If you like the changing seasons, it's ideal. Minneapolis& St. Paul are about an hour's drive for excellent entertainment, culture and sporting events. Easy going 'gone fishing' atmosphere around Red Wing.

Education - 5/3/2006

As do most Minnesotans in most Minnesota cities, the thinking is that their education system and its achievments are second to none. But it is a matter of the barometer you chose to measure by and how you apply it. Ask any Minnesotan where the best educated people in the U.S. come from and they'll name their home town. No bias here.
