After growing up in the hustle of S Fl, moving to Dacula was culture shock. It is quiet, friendly, country-like, yet only about 10 minutes from the biggest mall in the SE and about 15 restaurants. You can't beat it. The people actually speak to you, not bark at you, the parks are great, there are plenty of kid-friendly parks and tons of family activities. The schools are ranked in this years CNN top 1300 schools in the nation. The weather is great. Summers are pretty hot, but fall & spring are beautiful. You are only about 1 1/2 hours from the mountains, so you can see snow in the winter and beautiful fall foilage. While the lake (Lake Lanier) is not the beach (and that is the only thing I miss from FL), it will suffice. Other nice cities nearby include Suwanee & Buford.I don't miss FL at all.

Lving in Dacula for 3 years and love the area... - 1/27/2007

My family and I have been living here for a little over 3 years. I've come to love this place after having spent most of my life living in Central Florida. Dacula has all the amenities that you would need from a larger city but still has that country flavor. Gwinnett County has the best parks and recreation facilites in the entire state and is one of the four best in the country. Housing is affordable and you tend to get a lot of square footage for the money. As I am typing this, I must admit, I get very homesick when I go back to Florida and each time I return to Dacula, I want to leave. It has nothing to do with Dacula but rather a love for the place of my youth. I have a wonderful wife to thank for giving me the occasional reality check. Property taxes here are reasonable and the schools (elementary, middle, and high school) are all very good and have a great parent/teacher involvment. I won't go as far as to say that this place is perfect but it is fairly close to what most of us working class folks want for their family and children. The only thing is if you have to work in Atlanta, the commute is hell. I won't kid you there. It's probably one of the worst in the country. The trick is to either work for a company who allows you to have a virtual office or if you must work in the city, leave before 6AM to get into work and leave no later than 3:30 in the afternoon. The GDOT is currently working on the state's largest project of expanding the 316/I-85 interchange which is going to be dubbed "Bull Dog junction" since 316 is out towards the direction of Athens and UGA. I hope you find this commentary helpful if you are considering moving to Georgia and specifically, Gwinnett County. Take Care and God Bles-Josh 01-27-2007[read more...]
