quality of life in pahrump - 7/15/2007

I have now lived in Pahrump for five years. We moved here from Las Vegas because we were tired of not having any space, being fearful when sending kids to school, worrying about home invasion break-ins, and generally all things related to large city crime stats. I will say Pahrump has had it's growing pains; with that said there is now an open and operational hospital, a super wal-mart, huge amounts of new commercial office/retail space, and many other new businesses slated for development. It is about a 45 minute drive to the south end of las vegas with all needed shopping, dining, medical and technical facilities in that area. I can attest, that it has often taken me 45 minutes to get across the vegas valley, so the drive in from pahrump is a cost that I consider a trade off for the fact that my child can attend a private school for only $200 per month; the car doors have never been locked wether in the driveway or in the parking lot; the lock on my front door is usually left un-locked. I agree, it is a drive with fuel being $3 per gallon, and there are many businesses still needed here, however, it will change. I really enjoy being afforded the nightlife of vegas without the "costs". Homes are a bargain as well. I have searched the entire west coast and have found nothing that compares with the value in real estate that Pahrump still offers, even in a slow market.

Well here we go again. A new Federal Prison to be build in Pahrump should put us on the map. I have lived in a place where one prison was all we were to have but we ended up with five. So in your advertisment for living you need to address and let people know you want prisons in your living place. What a shame we have to witness a fall of living standards just to make a few happy.

Concrete is Gold & Brothel Income is Kept a Secret - 10/27/2009

Concrete is Gold for the Nye County Assessor! … And other Outrageous behavior … The Nye County Assessor is the biggest problem in Pahrump. Pahrump is a quiet, peaceful and economic place to live except for the Nye County Assessor. The Assessor sends out its employees to snoop on every residence in the town of Pahrump. Why, you ask? Because the Assessor is looking for concrete! Yes, concrete. The Nye County Assessor charges property tax by how much concrete you put on your land. For instance, if there is a water well pump house constructed, the Assessor wants to know if the floor is made of concrete. If you put a post in the ground, the assessor wants to know if you stabilized the post with concrete. This crazy behavior of the Assessor is due to the Assessor’s ravenous need for County revenue. (Why? When the 28 working Brothels in Nye County bring in million of dollars in revenue; Yes, the Brothels pay for the majority of the schooling for children. But, the Assessor refuses to be forthwith concerning the County income from Brothels.) Furthermore, the Assessor sends out two ladies who actually draw a diagram of your residence, and then they put the diagram in PDF file and put it on the Assessor’s internet website for every crook in the world to figure out how to break into the residence. The Assessor is the problem with Pahrump. Unfortunately, the Assessor who originally started this search for concrete in Pahrump has now moved up to a higher elected position in the State of Nevada. However, his crazy assessing procedures still remain in Pahrump. [read more...]

It takes a certain personality to live in Pahrump. - 7/7/2009

This is the Wild West. Gambling, prostitution, fireworks, owning pet lions, all of this is okay and legal here, so you have to be aware and okay with all of it. There are about twice as many bars and taverns as there ought to be for the population, so there is a lot of cheap beer flowing because of the competition. You can probably imagine that this is not a great place to raise children. It can be done, however, if you are a good parent and you pay attention. The schools are okay, perhaps a bit underfunded. To counteract all the vice here, there are a decent number of churches and Christian schools, if you're into that. The town council is going to put in a prison right up the street, despite all the people trying to fight it, so expect that happening in a year or so. There's definitely some corruption in government here. When the sheriff's wife ran for a judge position, it looked a lot like a conflict of interest. She didn't win, but it was pretty ballsy. Like the judge is not going to have inside information and pre-conceived notions of every criminal her husband arrests. Laughable. It's a hundred and ten degrees outside as I write this, it will be 27 degrees or lower in the winter. There are a few months of the year in spring and fall where you can enjoy outdoor activities in milder temperatures, but the long months of extreme heat and cold really benefit the casinos more than they do anyone else. It's dry, though, so the location is ideal for people with respiratory problems, as the desert climate will likely improve quality of life and in all likelihood extend it. I have suffered from severe allergies all my life, but here I only get sick maybe once a year in the deepest, wettest part of winter when it snows. If you like animals, there are very few regulations restricting you from keeping them. There's a pick-up truck I always see at the Wal-Mart with a goat tied up in the back like it was a dog. They bring it everywhere. The house down the street from me has lions, and we hear them roar and huff at night. A lot of people keep pet horses in their yards, and land is cheap enough where that is possible. Pigs, chickens, even peacocks are all also fairly common. There is a pack of wild horses roaming around town to be aware of. They have killed at least one family's horse, and I nearly got into a car accident when they ran out on to the highway late at night. There is a fairly low cost of living here, with readily available, affordable housing. However, there are very few jobs in Pahrump, so moving here should only be considered by people who are retiring or can work remotely via computer. If your work requires a broadband connection, contact the cable company prior to choosing a location, to be sure that CMA can provide adequate service for your needs. Shopping for new items here is poor, and the local economy suffers from its proximity to Vegas, in that our consumption spending is primarily diverted there rather than recycled into this community. During the holiday season, people drive to Vegas to buy gifts, rather than peruse the meager offerings available here. There is no decent computer store. The two that exist provide repair service, but do not carry inventory, so if your video card craps out, expect a drive to Vegas. Wal-Mart often has more computer equipment than these repair shops, and always at a better price. For used goods, however, we have some of the greatest, cheapest thrift stores I have ever seen. The Windsor thrift store is open seven days a week and carries all manner of electronics, furniture and decorative items and collectibles. On Saturday and Sunday, you can visit Building 160, which is absolutely insanely large, with two Big-Top tents full of furniture and an airplane hangar filled with other merchandise like electronics, jewelry, cosmetics and more. The outdoor areas in between are also filled with all sorts of children's toys, exercise equipment, retail fixtures, appliances, books, records, and nearly everything else imaginable. If you do decide to move here, just sell everything you own and you can outfit a new home with everything your old one had for pennies on the dollar. I sold a hand-carved Chinese liquor cabinet when I left Hawaii for over a thousand dollars. I found virtually the same piece here in Pahrump, but with a nicer marble top and I bought it for two hundred. I sold my cloth couch in Hawaii for $300 and bought a leather one here (with a fold-out bed) for just fifty bucks. Insane. We finally have a movie theater, although they only have one screen, zero-incline flooring (so there's always someone's head in front of you) and they are closed on Saturday because the theater room is in a casino and the room is used as a Bingo hall on Saturdays. I owned the only comic shop in town, but closed my business in April in response to the slow economy. The skating rink closed around the same time, but the indoor miniature golf remains, at least for the time being. Several other local businesses, including a nightclub that opened only eight months ago, have also closed their doors. There are many, many empty commercial units available for people looking to open a business, but you should be advised to haggle aggressively when negotiating a lease. Many units have been empty for months and even years, and are doing the land owners no good, other than as tax write-offs. At an hour and 15 minutes from Vegas, 45 minutes from Death Valley, an hour from Tecopah hot springs and 4 and a half hours from L.A. the location is appealing to those who don't mind driving and want to do some travelling. I have driven to the Grand Canyon, L.A. several times, been to San Francisco twice and up to the Sequoia National Park, and am planning to visit Yosemite and Salt Lake soon. All by driving and with only a small budget. There is good and bad here, like everywhere else. Crime exists, but is not rampant. Violent crime is rare, but it still happens, so you have to be on alert. Over all, Pahrump is only a good place to live if you can adjust to it. For many people, it will not be a good choice.[read more...]

I think Pahurmp is good place to raise a family - 1/26/2007

Yes I think Pahrump is a good place to raise a family. We moved to pahrump in 2005 because we didn't want our kids growing up in Las Vegas. All the crime, over crowded schools. We couln't move to far from Vegas because of my husband's work. My girls are doing great in school and I love the country-like atmosphere. In Pahrump, people are relaxed and enjoy life because there is no traffic to fight and little crime. Yes my husband has an hour drive to work, but so does some of his coworkers who live in Vegas. They work on one end of town and live on the other. There is a Community College, and a Hospital. Today, Pahrump is one of the fastes growing towns in Nevada. They are using former farm land and are developing it into housing. William Lyons are currently building a golf course community which is called Mountain Falls with a championship Golf course. Beazer and American West are also coming out to Pahrump. Remember, twenty years ago people wondered why anyone would drive from Henderson to Las Vegas to work. Today Henderson is the place to live instead of Las Vegas. Where will Pahrump be in twenty or so years. Intrested in property in Pahrump? Go to: www.pahrumpnvliving.com[read more...]

too good to be true - 8/21/2006

in 1999 you could not give a house away in pahrump. a 1600sq. ft. home could be picked up in forclosure for$90.000 today that same home $300.000 but look out the pahrump/las vegas housing crash is coming. homes purchased for no money down and properties with equity have been home equity loaned or arm loan to the max to support the owners gambling addition.once the prices of these overvalued homes come down. look out.the pahrump housing market will revert back to the 1999 senerio, forclosed homes for $90.000 if they can get that.no joke--[read more...]

Pahrum general - 2/24/2006

No zoning, no hospital, Walmart but no Home Depot, Fire department covers only 4.5 mile circle in center of valley rest of us NFPA zone 10, or on our own due to response time so if neighbors house burns yours might also. On the good side a hospital is almost built, however has no water or sewer service despite a judicial order for it to be supplied by the private untility that is in financial trouble and may be delayed yet again perhaps six months to a year. County services improving slowly with time, road paving and water control greatly improved over last 10 years. City, unincorporated, having usual growing pains with the fifth attempt at incorporation, other four defeated, as south end of valley is becoming Las Vegas bedroom community with several thousand new homes approved for constuction and one 777 unit currently under construction. New construction making it difficult to obtain repairs but situtation greatly improved over last year or so. Town has no industy of note, somewhat mixed with horse ranchs next to welding shops next to houses, businesses rather scattered with 100 mile plus day just to do shoping improving with recent commercial development. Overall things on the upswing despite fits and stumbles. [read more...]
