Ive lived here all my life... I love the proximity to beaches and other recreational places and historical sites. Long Island in general is beautiful... but for a price!! Unless u are making over 80,000 per year dont even think about buying a house here... Taxes are insane! Ohh for u renters... not much better (take it from me... I knnow) Median price for a 2br apartment is a stagering 1295 per month and that is not including ultilties!!! To rent a house 2-3 bed rooms will take about 1400+ out of your wallet per month. Some areas are experiencing influx of hispanic day workers hanging out on street side hoping to land a job for the day. Traffic on LIE can be a horror job during rush hours and the local roads with new shopping malls etc going up are becoming very congested.. Weather is typical lower Northeast... Nice summers (high humidity at times) fair but usually damp springs and fall... and winters....well if you like snow sometimes we have been known to get dumpped with about 20 inches or so on occasion.. All in all.. Long Island has its up and downs.. As a lower middle class married w/ children its a daily struggle to stay above water.. Will never be able to purchase a home here. Looking for my new place to call home..... Love ya Long Island but i cant afford you!!!!

Riverhead: A strange combination of people and thi - 8/25/2012

It's a mixed race town, a lot of poverty, in fact the poorest town on Long Island. There is a fair amount of crime. There are nice areas beside seedy ones, there are things to do, like the Aquarium, Splish Splashe a water park. It is an old town with a lot of old buildings alongside strip malls new and garish. Tanger Mall, a hughe discount shopping area of many stores. There are farms, horse ranches and slums and a modern health care center but at the same time it is not a cheap place to live. I would like to relocate to a place friendlier to people who are older and/or handicapped. This town is not kind in that area, affordable housing is like $1,020 - $1,600 for a one bedroom apartment, no washer dryer hookup's in many apartments, no centeral air conditioning, no dish washer's, little to no storage. Life in Riverhead, NY - 5/29/2008

I live in a suburb in Eastern Long Island. This was once a huge farming area, but most of the farms have been sold and developed. I pay over $7000 in property taxes alone, then there is our state tax. I could never retire here. I am surrounded by farms still, but some of these farms may be gone in a number of years. Our neighborhood consists of 14 homes, there is a buffalo farm adjoining our community. We have African American, Korean, Hispanic,Indian, and whites in our community. It is very safe.[read more...]

Riverhead Native - 5/7/2007

If you don't mind a downtown that is almost deserted and has been undergoing "revitilizaion" for the past forty years then this is the town for you. Complete with gang bangers, drug addicts, crack whores, shake down artists and the like less than one mile from the county prison that releases inmates every morning. The inmates then compete with the homeless people for the best place to stand in front of the bus stop next to the liquor store making it impossible for anyone else to pass...Next time I'll come back and tell you about the metal detectors in the schools, the high taxes, the corrupt politicians, the traffic, the useless police dept. etc. etc. I couldn't get out of their fast enough.[read more...]
